About the Author
Laura Cunningham, an artist and naturalist, studied paleontology and biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and has worked at various field biology jobs for the California Department of Fish and Game, the U.S. Geological Survey, and other organizations, getting to know such species as the Owens Valley pupfish, the southern California steelhead trout, the Yosemite toad, and the Panamint alligator lizard. Simultaneously, she has been studying and painting California's historic and living wildlife, flora, and unique landscapes. She lives near Death Valley National Park, where she cofounded the group Basin and Range Watch to explore the historical ecology of the desert ecosystems of California and Nevada, and to protect them.

Not just for Californians

This book about the historical ecology of California is not just for Californians. Very readable, extensively researched, and lavishly illustrated, it is for anyone who is interested in how and why landscapes have changed and been changed by both human and natural forces. The illustrations are reproductions of the author's paintings and field sketches. The excellent paintings recreate landscapes from before European settlement and in some cases, juxtapose them with recent photographs of the same spot. The text details how flora and fauna - native plants and animals, predators and prey, grasses and trees - interacted in various environments. Grizzly bears, condors, and salmon as well as the role of fire are among the subjects that get special attention. Both the paintings and the text are the result of field and library research over a period of 25 years. I found the book fascinating and I'm from east of the Mississippi.

Brilliant. Amazing.

Extraordinary resource!

This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen. I've bought several copies for my college students to use in our CA Bio-regions class--they love the book too. It's an amazing, valuable, moving and superbly-researched reference! It is also, clearly, a labor of love--which California both past and present richly deserves as such an astounding place. The author/artist's detailed and often lyrically written text is enriched by equally lyrical art depicting habitats and species (Pleistocene as well as historic and contemporary). Especially moving are the paintings juxtaposing recreations of former sites and wildlife/plants with photos of today's development at the exact same spot. Thank you Laura Cunningham!!!
