Celtic Ireland

I recently returned from having spent 3 weeks in Ireland. It is hard to avoid the "Celtic Spirit" no matter where you go. From Belfast, Northern Ireland to Dublin (Gaelic spoken in many areas) you are challenged by the spirit of the green countryside.

I became interested in Celtic design while visiting Trinity University in Dublin where I was exposed to the Book of Kells and manuscript drawings that were so vivid in an ancient book (800 AD). I recently visited the National Gallery of Art in D.C. and found this book which has wonderful Celtic designs. It even assists you in step by step drawing of some of the Celtic ornamentation (including exerpts from the Book of Kells). I could not have asked for a better direction than this book

I cannot sing the praises of this book enough. I have seen many books on Celtic ornament in the past, but this one surpasses all. It has excellent production, with wonderful colour plates. The book gives a history of Celtic ornament. It looks at each of the major design elements in detail. You can see from the wonderfully clear and large drawings how the designs are made up. Here you will find spirals, triskels, interlace, tree of life, labyrinths, animals and much more. If you have ever bought other books on how to draw Celtic designs and given up, I urge you to buy this book. You will succeed with this one. This book is a treasury of Celtic design and ornament and can be used for inspiration in both art and craft. I loved it. This review first appeared on yarnsandfabrics.co.uk

I loved eferything about this book: the photographs, the history of the designs, the symbolism and the actual designs. i will use this book as an inspirarion for other designs in different media such as rug hooking and weaving.

One man's love of music, and he he got there...

This book is really about one man's life and love of music. It's a love affair to some degree with his craft and, it is perhaps the most honest book I have ever read. The detail which he can recall about the nuance of his life growing up a musician is not only impressive, but it paints a 3D image almost that you feel like you can out your arms around. I will probably read this every few years.

Must read for any drummer, or drummer wanna be

The rites of passage for a person that is without question an anomaly to the "traditional"music scene. Hal Howland is deeply intellectual,complex, intuitive, funny and, above all, talented. I saw Hal play with Howard Livingston in the Keys years ago, and while he can bang with the best, this book shows where he came from and how he got there. It's great grounding for anyone that inspires to be a musician, like me, or for any of us that have walked that path, gives you a comrade to talk arm in arm with, through the desire and despair. A musician was once defined as a person that packs five thousand dollars worth of equipment into a five hundred dollar car to drive one hundred miles to make fifty bucks. If that's you, or if that's who you want to be, read the Human Drummer

Funny, Fact Filled, and Fabulous!

A must read for anyone contemplating a life of music! Hal's approach to his craft and vocation, seen through the eyes of the music teacher, student, and musician is truly inspirational. I highly recommend this book to both the budding and seasoned musician, and most certainly any parent looking to support their son or daughter's decision to play the drums. Some real life lessons to be learned here, along with many laugh out loud moments, make this my favorite read of the year.

About the Author
Mohammad Sadeh was born in Jerusalem Israel. When he was a kid he was always curious about how cartoons were created but no one from his family had any idea at that time of the process, When he saw for the first time Blizzard cinematics for World of War Craft and Diablo he was struck by the beauty of 3d and what it can do. He spent all his teen years trying to study 3d by him self and eventually made the decision to study 3d animation in Canada and found a great school in Vancouver. Here, He studied one year and then took an amazing journey to transform from an international student to a professional animator working in the VFX industry with companies like Image Engine, Method Studios, MPC and many more on multiple Hollywood movies. I loe this book! I have so many books and this has quickly moved up to the top of my favorites list. Smooth rich paper great for blending but without smearing. I use three different types of pencils and they all work beautifully I very much recommend this book

Pretty!

This is another good quality colouring book with decent weight paper and one sided images that help prevent bleed through. The images are much simpler than a lot of the other adult colouring books, so if you don't want to color very small spaces this would work well. I like the artwork itself, it is varied throughout the book so you always have something different to colour, and the images match the theme of the book well with no head scratchers included.

The artist did a good job of arranging her pictures and there is a colouring example set in the first few pages of the book to give you a potential feel for how you might approach making the images look authentic. This would make a nice introductory book for anyone looking to get into adult colouring.

About the Author
Tom Mankiewicz (1942–2010) was a screenwriter, director, and producer of motion pictures and television series, perhaps best known for his work on the James Bond films, Superman (1978), Superman II (1980), and the television series Hart to Hart (1979–1984).

Robert Crane is coauthor of Bruce Dern: Things I've Said, but Probably Shouldn't Have―An Unrepentant Memoir, Jack Nicholson: The Early Years, and SCTV: Behind the Scenes as well as a contributor to Hal Ashby: Interviews. He lives in Los Angeles.

Decades of Hollywood insider info

Tom Mankiewicz has been a force in Hollywood for many years--the son of director Joe (Cleopatra among others). In his very candid memoir, Tom takes the reader into his life, first as the son of someone famous, then as he emerged as a force to be reckoned with on his own. A writer and problem solver for movies, including James Bond, Superman, and Delirious, his career spanned decades, and Tom rubbed shoulders of many of Hollywood's elite.

This informal and relaxed memoir was engaging, warm, and scandal free. I really enjoyed reading Tom's journey.

Mankiewicz autobiography

Tom Mankiewicz' book is full of fun stories about his time in Hollywood. His writing style is casual and suggestive about what contributed to him being a good script writer. A friend offered that today, Mankiewicz would not have survived the corporate film business; he would have only made it in the world of indie films. The Hollywood of Mankiewicz' time is gone. To read his account is to visit a particular time in the Hollywood film industry. I recommend this book for any lover of the movies.

The area was rich in clay, which would be vital to the development of the pottery industry. From the 1840s to 1915, pottery was king in Greensboro, and the town boomed. As the pottery industry faded, it too would be replaced by another industry: coal. Greensboro, once famous for its glass and pottery, became known for its bituminous coal mines. This book covers the early days of Greensboro to the devastating Election Day Flood of 1985.

Michele Buday-Murray is a native of Mapletown, located several miles outside of Greensboro. She obtained her masters degree in education and is a certified history teacher. The photographs in this book come from the Borough of Greensboro, Greene County Historical Society, Cornerstone Genealogical Society, and private residents.

I have not actually received the book yet, but am sure I will love it. My ancestry from about 1800 until the mid 1900's is from Greensboro. I would just like to comment on the book description, which states "Later, Albert Gallatin introduced a group of Belgian glassblowers to the area, and in 1807, the glassworks in Greensboro was opened." printed matter

i first glanced through this book in one of my classes. i picked it up not thinking much of it except the niceness of the cover. as i looked through i decided that this is by far one of the best books on graphic design that i have seen. the printing is excelent and i especially liked that it was readable in english and in dutch. the work included in the book again, is very nice. it is a very good representation of dutch design, and can be very educational to those who study outside of the area.
