About the Author
Pat Hunter, one of California’s most recognized artists, is best known for her watercolor depictions of historical landmarks. Since the early 1990s, Hunter has been an invited artist-in-residence at the Yosemite National Park Art Center. Hunter’s commissioned art can be found in numerous corporate and private collections, including more than 25 McDonald’s restaurants throughout the United States. Hunter and writer Janice Stevens have collaborated on numerous books featuring Hunter’s watercolors, including “Fresno’s Architectural Past, Volume I” (2006); “Fresno’s Architectural Past, Volume II” (2007); “William Saroyan: Places in Time” (2008); “Remembering the California Missions” (2010); and “An Artist and a Writer Travel Highway 1 North” (2012), all of which are available from Craven Street Books.
Janice Stevens is an author and instructor of English literature, composition and creative writing for the State Center Community College District. In addition to her works in collaboration with Pat Hunter, Stevens has compiled two volumes of military service memoirs by San Joaquin Valley veterans: “Stories of Service: Valley Veterans Remember World War II” and “Stories of Service, Volume II: Valley Veterans Remember World War II, Korea, Vietnam. and the Cold War.”

It gives you a nice feel of what it might be like to make ...

I purchased this volume at a book signing event in Cambria and found it to be an enjoyable read. The writing is personal and conversational, which gives the reader a feeling of traveling in the car with the writer and illustrator as they make their way down the coast from the Big Sur area with their dogs. It gives you a nice feel of what it might be like to make the journey yourself, complete with references to morning coffee and blueberry muffins. The account also includes references to what's easily accessible and side trips that might be a little more difficult or time-consuming. The illustrations are very well done, offering a nice selection of the sights you might see on the trip, from natural wonders and detailed depictions of the local flora to historic sites and some pieces of off-the-beaten-path Americana. I particularly liked the artwork of downtown Cayucos and the pier in that same town, the Solvang windmill, Oceano Depot and Madonna Inn. Many landmarks familiar to local residents are given a new and appealing treatment that give the reader a feeling of being there in the moment while adding a wistful, almost ethereal quality that makes them seem timeless. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone planning - or wanting to relive - a trip down California's Central Coast.
