Philadelphia Museum of Art: Handbook of the CollectionsFrom Yale University Press

This fully updated and beautifully redesigned handbook is the essential guide to the encyclopedic collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Divided into four sections—Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Contemporary—the handbook features more than 500 masterpieces from the museum’s world-renowned holdings, each handsomely illustrated in color and accompanied by a brief text written by the museum’s curators. Each section integrates a wide variety of media, including paintings, works on paper, sculptures, decorative arts, costumes and textiles, arms and armor, and photography. Expanded entries provide in-depth information on some of the most historically significant and beloved objects, such as a 16th-century Indian temple hall, Grace Kelly’s wedding dress, and Marcel Duchamp’s Étant donnés. Other passages discuss the contributions of several of the museum’s most important donors, exploring the idea of the Philadelphia Museum of Art as “a collection of collections.”

Great Works of Art, Too Bad Not Coffee Table Size
By Elliot Silvera
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is one of our country's largest museums. I always wanted a book on this amazing museum in my art library. This slightly oversized handbook is a great introduction of the museum's Asian, European, American, and Contemporary collections. The book begins with a brief history of the museum and then the more than 500 works in different media are discussed in four sections. When perusing through the book one will notice the museum's great strength in the decorative arts. About half of the reproductions are of furniture, silver, ceramics, textiles, and even articles of clothing. Those who wanted a book just on the museum's fine paintings, drawings. and sculptures will be disappointed. Throughout the catalog are short essays on some of the most important donors.

Asia- The museum has one of the largest Asian collections. This section includes paintings, sculptures, prints, and decorative pieces from China, Japan, Korea, India, as well as from Southeast Asia. However, the most impressive works are in the field of Asian architecture. Illustrated are an Indian temple hall, a Japanese teahouse, and a Chinese scholar's study. Although, I loved this section, I wished for more Chinese paintings. There are only four or five highlighted.

Europe- This section includes works from the late medieval period to 1945. The museum is strongest in Renaissance, Dutch Baroque, French Impressionist and post Impressionist and early modern paintings and as I mentioned earlier the decorative arts. It also contains the second biggest collection of arms and armor in the United States. Some of the highlights include a Rogier van der Weyden diptych , Vincent van Gogh's "Sunflowers", Paul Cezanne's "The Large Bathers", a Pablo Picasso self portrait, Marcel Duchamp's "Nude Descending a Staircase" as well as important works by Sandro Boticelli, Peter Paul Rubens, Nicholas Poussin, Jan Steen, Camille Corot ,Edouard Manet, Auguste Renoir, and Henri Matisse. Other interesting canvases include the mysterious "Interior" by Edgar Degas, Anton Mauve's "Return of the Flock", one of the few Hague School works in an American museum, and Joan Miro's early "Horse, Pipe, and Red Flower", a Cubist inspired still life. When looking through this section, one will notice the lack of representation of women artists. "The Last Drop", a painting by Judith Leyster is the only featured work by a European female. Also illustrated are works from the museum's sister art institution, the Rodin Museum which holds the largest selection of works by the French sculptor, Auguste Rodin outside Paris.

The Americas- This section broadly covers the history of American art from colonial times to the early 1940s. The museum has the largest collection of works by Thomas Eakins and is also strong in furniture and crafts created in Pennsylvania. The book also discusses important paintings by the Peales ,"the first family" of American art, Mary Cassatt, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Winslow Homer, and Georgia O'Keeffe. This section also showcases the museum's growing Latin American collection most notably works from colonial Mexico. The chapter ends with one of the museum's most iconic pieces, Grace Kelly's wedding ensemble.

Contemporary- This section covers the period from the postwar era to the present. As not a big fan of abstract sculpture, minimalist painting, and modern design, this section didn't interest me as much. However, I did enjoy two figurative paintings, Andrew Wyeth's "Groundhog Day" and Romare Bearden's collage, "The Blue Snake" as well as several photographs by major figures such as Paul Strand, Robert Frank, and Dorothea Lange.

Despite some minor flaws, I enjoyed this book. Too bad the museum didn't want to publish it as a coffee table book which I would have preferred. Most times, I don't like art catalogs in handbook format because images are quite small and details are not clear. However, I was surprised how large most reproductions were. There were no more than two works to a page. If you want to learn more about this major museum, I would strongly recommend.

By String King
I've never seen an Omnibook with Tab. The tab is a waste of space. Some of us know how to read. Tab makes the book too much of a page turner to be useful and besides, there are already plenty of Hendrix books in tab.

San Francisco Jazz (Images of America), by Medea Isphording Bern

San Francisco is probably best known for its hills, ubiquitous fog, dungeness crab and the Golden Gate Bridge. But jazz musics threads are similarly woven into the fabric of the city and its environs. Whether performed in renowned clubs like So Different, Jimbos Bop City, Black Hawk, and the Jazz Workshop or in halls like the Primalon Ballroom and Great American Music Hall, jazz has infused the city from the Barbary Coast to the Fillmore, thrilling audiences for over a century. San Franciscans have grooved to and incubated scores of jazz acts, hot and cool, raucous and contemplative. That tradition continues today.

Fabulous images, passionate commentary
By ahrosales
Loved this concise and yet also far-reaching history of jazz in San Francisco. Bern has chosen high quality images, quite a few of them from private collections. She weaves the photos together in a fascinating story that draws the reader into SF's jazz culture. In particular I enjoyed the numerous photos of musicians at work and play, as well as images from old menus, programs and so forth that impart authenticity (and fun!) to the accounts of concerts that took place years ago. In her commentary and photo captions, Bern conveys her deep passion for and understanding of jazz and its historical significance.

Read this Book!
By Dr. Pamela Kaye
If you feel a connection with jazz, if you have an affinity for San Francisco, or if you just love to read great writing you will not be disappointed by Bern’s book, San Francisco Jazz. As with most books that I peruse, I flipped through Bern’s book from back to front. The compelling photographs kept me flipping. The commentary of places and names brought me right into the heart of San Francisco, sat me down at the feet of jazz legends, and handed me a program of the evening’s fare. When I flipped to Bern’s introduction in the front of the book I read the first paragraph and I was hooked. Bern writes with the energy and soul of one who feels deeply and passionately about her subject. Many of the photos in the book come from the archives of the San Francisco Traditional Jazz Foundation and from the Stanford Archive of Recorded Sound. But the really precious ones could only have been obtained through Medea Bern’s personal friendship with so many jazz musicians and her years of hanging out with cool cats.
Five Stars! Pamela Kaye, Ph.D.

Ray JohnsonRay Johnson

Pioneer of mail art and an early participant in both the Pop and Fluxus movements, Ray Johnson created complex, punning works that ingeniously combine text and image, celebrity culture and art history, wit and melancholy. Figures such as Mickey Mouse, Elvis Presley, James Dean, Michael Jackson and Calvin Klein models populate his many collages―a candid foreshadowing of current societal obsession. In the 20 years since his death, Johnson's work has become an increasingly accurate depiction of our fragmented and overstimulated society and includes some of the most recognizable imagery from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Beautifully designed, this massive compendium includes 296 color reproductions of collages, drawings, interventions and other ephemera from Johnson's estate.
Born in Detroit, Michigan, Ray Johnson (1927–1995) studied under Josef Albers and Robert Motherwell at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, and worked as a painter early in his career, exhibiting alongside Ad Reinhardt and Charmion von Wiegand before embracing pop imagery, collage and mail art, producing thousands of collages and other works on paper. His life and death (by suicide, jumping from a bridge in Sag Harbor, Long Island) were the subject of the award-winning documentary How to Draw a Bunny (2002).

Review
In this compendium, which brings together scores of Johnson's witty collages and drawings, often incorporating iconic figures from the 20th century, as well as other ephemera from Johnson's estate, the artist is revealed to be a pioneer of both Pop and Fluxus aesthetics. Fascinating art
By Mary A. Murphy
This is a unique art book- and it is an ART book, with zero commentary on the pictures. The illustrations vary from loose sketches to clean lines to digitally painted concept art. Some are whimsical, some are fearsome, some look like they belong in a field guide to a world that doesn't exist. Kezrek has an amazing sense of fantastical anatomy and great compositions; it was definitely a pleasure to leaf through this and see the variety of pictures and progress pieces. As for the physical book, it's a nice size, not so big that it doesn't fit on a shelf, nor so small that you can't see the details, and has more pages than I expected- even after seeing the number listed here!

Why only four stars then? I think two piddling things keep it from making the leap from "like" to "love" . Some of the scanned-in pencil sketches have smudgy grey backgrounds which make it obvious where they were cropped to fit the page; I found it distracting. The other is that the DPI of the printing doesn't always seem sufficient to support the detail of the artwork. It's not an issue on every picture, or even most of them, but I'd love to have seen smoother prints of some of those paintings.

I'm going to guess that the print resolution was a cost-saving compromise, because the price on this is excellent for this kind of book and for what's there. Is this book visually interesting? Absolutely. Is it perfect? Not quite- and I guess that's kind of the point in the first place.

Prague, Capital of the Twentieth Century: A Surrealist History, by Derek Sayer

Setting out to recover the roots of modernity in the boulevards, interiors, and arcades of the "city of light," Walter Benjamin dubbed Paris "the capital of the nineteenth century." In this eagerly anticipated sequel to his acclaimed Coasts of Bohemia: A Czech History, Derek Sayer argues that Prague could well be seen as the capital of the much darker twentieth century. Ranging across twentieth-century Prague's astonishingly vibrant and always surprising human landscape, this richly illustrated cultural history describes how the city has experienced (and suffered) more ways of being modern than perhaps any other metropolis.

Located at the crossroads of struggles between democratic, communist, and fascist visions of the modern world, twentieth-century Prague witnessed revolutions and invasions, national liberation and ethnic cleansing, the Holocaust, show trials, and snuffed-out dreams of "socialism with a human face." Yet between the wars, when Prague was the capital of Europe's most easterly parliamentary democracy, it was also a hotbed of artistic and architectural modernism, and a center of surrealism second only to Paris.

Focusing on these years, Sayer explores Prague's spectacular modern buildings, monuments, paintings, books, films, operas, exhibitions, and much more. A place where the utopian fantasies of the century repeatedly unraveled, Prague was tailor-made for surrealist André Breton's "black humor," and Sayer discusses the way the city produced unrivaled connoisseurs of grim comedy, from Franz Kafka and Jaroslav Hasek to Milan Kundera and Václav Havel. A masterful and unforgettable account of a city where an idling flaneur could just as easily be a secret policeman, this book vividly shows why Prague can teach us so much about the twentieth century and what made us who we are.

From Booklist
Paris may have been the capital of the nineteenth century, as Walter Benjamin observed, but for Sayer it is Prague—with its avant-garde impulses, erotic subcurrents, political contradictions, and moments of hideous violence—that best exemplifies the twentieth. Yet Prague “offers slim pickings for grand narratives, least of all for grand narratives of progress,” and therefore, suggests Sayer, the best way to reveal the Czech nucleus of culture at the crossroads of Eastern and Western Europe is through the dark mirror of surrealism. And so this selection is both an examination of the Prague experiences of André Breton, Guillaume Apollinaire, Vítezslav Nezval, and other surrealists, and a surrealist document in its own right, revealing its truths in a big, messy knot of jarring juxtapositions, playful obscenities, and found objects of profound beauty. Though some may find themselves frustrated by this fragmentary, nonlinear approach, readers up for the challenge will likely find themselves delighted by Sayer’s erudition as he reintroduces dozens of figures, many long forgotten or scarcely known to non-Czechs, into our understanding of twentieth-century cultural history. --Brendan Driscoll

One of Financial Times (FT.com) Best History Books of 2013

"[A] pleasure to read, luscious in a sultry kind of way."--Marci Shore, Times Literary Supplement

"[A] captivating portrait of 20th-century Prague. . . . The breadth of Sayer's knowledge is encyclopedic, and those willing to stay the course will be rewarded."--Publishers Weekly

"[T]his is a broad cultural history . . . with Sayer ranging easily across the arts. . . . [C]ontinually illuminating."--Andrew Mead, Architectural Review

"[Readers] will likely find themselves delighted by Sayer's erudition as he reintroduces dozens of figures, many long forgotten or scarcely known to non-Czechs, into our understanding of twentieth-century cultural history."--Brendan Driscoll, Booklist

"A real page-turner that leads the reader through all possible facets of Modernism in Prague, starting with Breton's and Eluard visit to the city in 1935 and ending with the crashing of all modern and Surrealist legacy by the Communist regime in the 1940s and 50s. At the same time, Sayer's book pays also great attention to previous periods while putting also a strong emphasis on the many efforts, from the Prague Spring till today's resistance to Prague's Macdonalization, to recover the revolutionary power and intuitions of the past, in the field of art but as well as in that of daily life. . . . [A] fabulously good read. . . . Derek Sayer stands already out as one of the most convincing representatives of how to rethink our cultural past today."--Jan Baetens, Leonardo

"Prague, Capital of the Twentieth Century is an erudite, comprehensive, well-illustrated and witty account of Czech art, design, architecture, literature and music in an era--stretching roughly from Czechoslovakia's creation in 1918 to the end of the second world war--when few in Paris, Berlin, London or even New York would have thought of the Czechs as not being part of western civilisation. . . . [I]n this book [Sayer] has succeeded in bringing back to life a golden avant-garde era that not long ago was in danger of being written out of history altogether."--Tony Barber, Financial Times

"Sayer has written a cultural history chockablock with artists, modernist architecture, manifestos, dark comedies, and broken alliances. . . . It will be valued by those interested in European cultural history during the twentieth century and how modern art was colored by the horrors of the political landscape."--Karen Ackland, ForeWord Reviews

"[T]he book . . . offers an insight into often quite extraordinary life stories connected with Prague as well as their international context."--Marta Filipova, Times Higher Education

"Sayer is a master of his sources: he looks back on a past still within reach, receding from us; he tracks down its threads, from liaison to liaison, from city to city. Can a research professor ever have written a book quite so triumphantly eccentric and persuaded a major academic press to publish it so splendidly?"--Nicolas Rothwell, Australian

"Through both the breadth and depth of his knowledge, Sayer will reward the patient reader; in the surrealist fashion, he focuses on the seemingly mundane details to provide a true biography of Prague."--Kelsey Berry Philpot, Library Journal

"In this erudite, witty and well-illustrated book, Sayer restores Czech avant-garde art between the two world wars to its rightful position at the heart of European culture. A worthy successor to Sayer's much-praised The Coasts of Bohemia."--Financial Times, "Books of the Year So Far" Summer Reading Guide

"A thoroughly engrossing book."--Jim Burns, Northern Review of Books

"Prague, Capital of the Twentieth Century is a thoroughly engrossing book. . . . What [Sayer] says makes me wish I'd read a book like his before I went there all those years ago. I think I would have looked around the city with a greater awareness of its qualities."--Jim Burns, Northern Review of Books

"This is a remarkable, unusual and fascinating book. . . . [T]he book brings together fantastic material from history, literature, art, politics, architecture and poetry, giving the readers an incredibly rich and diverse picture of modern Prague."--Michael Lowy, Debatte

"Sixty-two well-chosen illustrations, detailed descriptions, and many extended quotations from sources greatly enliven the book and make the author's argument convincing."--Choice

"[A] fascinating, forgotten, cultural history."--Diane Coyle, Enlightened Economist

"A masterful and unforgettable account of a city where an idling flaneur could just as easily be a secret policeman, this book vividly shows why Prague can teach us so much about the twentieth century and what made us who we are."--Czech Literature Portal

"Prague is not, strictly speaking, travel writing but it is, among other things, an excellent example of what travel writing is becoming, if indeed it hasn't already done so. . . . People are no longer so easily satisfied by the mere travel impressions of some outsider much like themselves. Instead they gravitate towards writers who actually have lived not simply in, but inside, a location for an extended period, as one lives inside one's clothes."--George Fetherling, Diplomat and International Canada

"Derek Sayer's meandering dérive through the hall of mirrors of 20th-century European history may prove taxing to the scholar who expects a clearly signposted route, but exhilarating to the intellectual flâneur. . . . Sayer has an admirable eye for (sometimes excruciating) detail; coupled with occasional glimmers of wry humour, this produces an intimate and absorbing experience while slowly, unobtrusively deconstructing the reader's understanding of history. . . . His Prague is woven around the reader slowly and silently, page by page, until we cannot help but be made aware of the final image--neither beautiful nor ugly, but undeniably real."--Esther Galfalvi, Gorse

"This is a beautiful, erudite, fascinating . . . book. Densely researched and resolutely nonlinear, it demands the reader's commitment."--Andrea Orzoff, Austrian Studies Newsmagazine

"Sayer covers much ground in this informative and well-illustrated book and its scope is much larger than the title would suggest. . . . Sayer presents a book that is thoroughly researched, highly informative and covers a range of Prague-related topics. It is recommended for postgraduate students, researchers and scholars with an interest in the history of arts, urban history and the cultural history of inter-war Czechoslovakia in particular."--Andrea Talabér, European Review of History

"Sayer's intimate knowledge of the writers he quotes, his vast erudition and fondness for the various aspects of Prague's history and topography make this book a joy to read. It will appeal to intellectual and cultural historians interested in the overlapping of modernism and modernity as well as those looking for new ways to write about history and place, but it will surely also attract a broader readership."--Claire Morelon, Social History

"Let's hope that the accolades Sayer's book is receiving will help redraw the existing maps of European twentieth-century culture and place Prague not in the political East, but in its centre."--Veronika Ambros, Canadian Slavonic Papers

"Beautiful, erudite, fascinating."--Andrea Orfozz, Austrian Studies Newsmagazine

"A remarkable, unusual and fascinating book."--Michael Löwy, Debatte Journal of Contemporary Central and Eastern Europe

From the Back Cover

"A triumph! Sayer's indispensable work is at once magisterial and puckish, authoritative and subversive, intellectually dense and brilliantly accessible."--Michael Beckerman, New York University

"This is a fascinating and brilliantly written narrative that combines elements of literary guide, biography, cultural history, and essay. Writing with warm engagement, and drawing on his detailed knowledge of Czech literature, art, architecture, music, and other fields, Derek Sayer provides a rich picture of a dynamic cultural landscape."--Jindrich Toman, University of Michigan

The book I always wanted to read
By Vincent Bridges
Mr. Sayer's earlier book on Czech history is a classic, but it stops at the most interesting point. The flowering of surrealism in Prague is an untold story in the west, one that allows us to see "modernism" in a new light. Mr. Sayer's book is a key piece of historical writing for understanding how the 20th century developed and suggests how this century might be different. Can't recommend this book highly enough.

Not for the non-initiated
By Oscar E Swan
Precious writing style. Author is enamored of his own accumulated knowledge of Prague, but not very good at communicating about it. It's overly detailed and full of references and names, that are known only to those already with an intricate knowledge of the period and area, without putting them in cultural context for the non-initiated.. Chapters are long and rambling, and at any given point one finds oneself asking, "what is the subject of this chapter, anyway". In its own way, overwhelmingly comprehensive coverage of the period. Good pictures.

Jindřich Štyrský is in this book, so it's a rare find. I read it while I took the train in to Berlin from Prague.

Thetford (Images of America), by Susanna H. French

Soon after Thetford was chartered in 1761, settlers from southern New England arrived and began transforming the forestland into a community. They took advantage of both the Connecticut River and the Ompompanoosuc River to forge a lively and self-sustaining collection of mill villages within the town. The railroad arrived in 1848, enabling three depot villages to blossom. Thetford Hill, with neither mills nor transportation, became home to the renowned Thetford Academy, the first coeducational secondary school in Vermont. Thetfords mill-based commerce ebbed significantly by 1900, but tourism became a prevalent industry, with city dwellers flocking to summer retreats such as Camp Hanoum and the Lake Fairlee camps. Despite fires, floods, and hurricanes, as well as the construction of the Union Village Dam in 1950 and Interstate 91 in 1971, Thetford has retained its resilient spirit and looks much as it did a century ago.

Puttin' the Funk in Blues
By Shane
This is an actual review of the product ! Wow!

Another great blues title from Hal Leonard publishing. The songs themselves are not too technically difficult. They are really fun to play along with or what I like to do most, play my own stuff over the backing tracks. What's different about this blues selection, if you're familiar with Albert King, is that the songs are more in a swing feel and have some stank/funk to them, which is what I really jive with when I improvise. Most of the songs are in drop D tuning. The version of "born under a bad sign," while in another "Blues Play Along' book has the bass line and a few main solos, this one has all the solos only, not the bass line/hook. Which is cool they're giving you a new version. Albert King was a legend, here's your chance to learn some of his tunes.
BTW : not overly funky per say, that's just the rhythm/feel of the beat.:-)

Silver Screen Fiend: Learning About Life from an Addiction to Film, by Patton Oswalt

The instant New York Times bestseller from author, comedian and actor Patton Oswalt, a “heartfelt and hilarious” (USA TODAY) memoir about coming of age as a performer during the late 1990s while obsessively watching classic films at a legendary theater in Los Angeles. “[Oswalt has] a set of synapses like a pinball machine and a prose style to match” (The New York Times).

Between 1995 and 1999, Patton Oswalt lived with an unshakable addiction. It wasn’t drugs, alcohol, or sex: it was film. After moving to Los Angeles, Oswalt became a huge film buff (or as he calls it, a sprocket fiend), absorbing classics, cult hits, and new releases at the famous New Beverly Cinema. Silver screen celluloid became Patton’s life schoolbook, informing his notion of acting, writing, comedy, and relationships.

Set in the nascent days of LA’s alternative comedy scene, Silver Screen Fiend chronicles Oswalt’s journey from fledgling stand-up comedian to self-assured sitcom actor, with the colorful New Beverly collective and a cast of now-notable young comedians supporting him all along the way. “Clever and readable...Oswalt’s encyclopedic knowledge and frothing enthusiasm for films (from sleek noir classics, to gory B movies, to cliché-riddled independents, to big empty blockbusters) is relentlessly present, whirring in the background like a projector” (The Boston Globe). More than a memoir, this is “a love song to the silver screen” (Paste Magazine).

Oswalt details film addiction in ‘Silver Screen Fiend’
By C. A. Bridges
It is not unusual for a celebrity to produce a tell-all memoir about his or her embarrassing, crippling addictions, and in his new memoir actor-comedian Patton Oswalt has confessed his own.

Not to drugs or alcohol. Oswalt’s fine with those. No, his drug-of-choice was on 35mm film, projected on a 72-foot screen, night after night.

In “Silver Screen Fiend: Learning About Life from an Addiction to Film,” Oswalt’s second book, he details the four years he spent compulsively watching over 250 movies while writing for “MADtv” during the day and working as a standup comedian at night.

Those were movies in a theater, mind you. He also watched movies on TV but those didn’t count. Nor did any movie where he missed the first 5 minutes, because that’s not how compulsion works.

In the early 90s Oswalt frequented the New Beverly theater in L.A. which featured an eclectic run of classic movies on film, as God intended. After a double-bill of “Sunset Boulevard” and “Ace in the Hole” one night he went home and looked them up in the five massive books on movies he owned, and he checked them off and added the date and the theater name and by that point it was all over. Once you start making checkmarks in a list your downward-spiralling obsession is pretty much guaranteed. Like a baseball player growing out his beard or a poker player with lucky socks, he knew, he knew that if he watched all the movies on his list and absorbed the lessons they had to teach he’d ultimately become a great director.

As he wrote in the forward to the book, “This will be either the most interesting or the most boring addiction memoir you’ve ever read.”

Fortunately Oswalt is funny and he nails his target -- himself -- with easy, self-effacing wit. Reading “Silver Screen Fiend” you really get the sense of how badly this habit screwed up his life, his job, his friendships and his love life. Racing around Los Angeles to different theaters and film festivals and indie showings, losing sleep to catch one more movie. At one point he describes making his then-girlfriend walk alone to her car at 2 a.m. because there was “an all-night horror-thon at the Cinerama Dome” and obviously she knew how important that was. (She did: she broke up with him.)

And as he writes he also shares his encyclopedic knowledge of film. With every movie mentioned he adds a tidbit of trivia, some context as to its importance, and the barest hint of the sort of nonstop infodumps with which he used to obliviously assault his friends because how can you enjoy a movie unless he first tells you every single thing to be known about it? “Don’t they want to talk about the movies of the newly rediscovered French crime master Jean-Pierre Melville, or the Dogme 95 movement, or the dozen or so hidden references in the latest Tarantino film?” he wrote. “Why are people so boring?”

All of this was to service his desire to become a director, and that’s why this book resonates with me. Not because I love film, but because I’ve read over 50 books on writing and my unfinished novels languish on my hard drive. For anyone who has ever spent much more time trying to learn how to do something than they’ve spent actually doing the thing, everything Oswalt says will make perfect sense.

When he’s not talking about his movie-watching he also describes the culture-shock of bringing what he thought was a solid routine to the harsh realities of the 90s L.A. comic scene, and how he and it developed over the next few years. You get great and funny stories about how he bombed, how he improved, how his friends did, and why Jerry Lewis hates him.

The book careens around time and often lapses into a stream-of-consciousness riff, dropping you right into the frenetic mindset of a “sprocket fiend.” It’s a faster read than you might think since the final sections are a list of imaginary movies that never were, part of his eulogy for New Beverly owner Sherman Torgan, who died in 2007, and the last 33 pages are the 250+ movies he watched during the course of the book.

“Silver Screen Fiend” is half memoir, half cautionary tale and it’s almost like hearing the current, self-deprecating Oswalt yell back over the years at his earlier, know-it-all persona.

Highly readable, but short on substance
By Tim K.
Patton Oswalt's second book is much like his first -- the writing is fine, there's just not enough of it to really carry the day here. The memoir-style portions of the book are interesting, particularly those that really tie into the idea of cinematic addiction and Oswalt's feeding of that addiction. Even the diversions -- such as a lengthy explanation of his use of Van Gogh's The NIght Cafe as a euphemism for life-altering moments -- have insight or narrative heft sufficient to warrant the read.

But it grinds to a sudden halt and falls into what reads like padding to keep the book from being relegated to Kindle single territory. There's a throwaway chapter of Oswalt inventing fictional movies he would want to see followed by an "appendix" that occupies approximately a quarter of the book that consists solely of a list of movies he saw during the years. While it's interesting to learn that such an interesting comedic mind thought "hey, Double Team, I'm going to see that," it's a disappointing finish.

Not hilarious, yet a lot of fun.
By Theresa Alan
Patton Oswalt is one of my top five all-time favorite stand-up comedians. That said, most of this book isn’t funny, so don’t expect this to be a few hours of belly laughs. However, all the things Patton is passionate about I am also passionate about. In that way, this was like listening to a monologue of someone I’d consider a friend because of our similar interests and because I respect his opinion and insight. Obviously, given the name of the book, he talks a lot about film, but also art – art in general and the kind hung on museum walls. And of course, comedy. I love reading about people who stick it out and ultimately make it in the arts. My favorite quote is from when he’s describing a group who’d moved to LA to see if they could make it in TV and film: “We’d piss and moan ... pointing out how unfair and whimsical and chaotic the entertainment business was, how it rarely rewarded the truly talented. NONE OF US COULD SEE HOW IT NEVER REWARDED THE INERT.” (Emphasis mine.)

I wish he wrote more about what he did to make it on the King of Queens. Was it just an audition? Had he met Kevin James doing stand-up before that? I love the stories of failures and successes. I wished he’d included more details in that area, but this is a quick, fun read. I have some classic movies added to my must-watch (or must-watch again) list after reading this!

For a few lucky McCartney fans, early 1975 is a time they’ll never forget. Paul and Linda McCartney, with their band Wings, came to record their album Venus and Mars at New Orleans’ famous Sea-Saint Studio. Beatles buffs came by, hoping to catch a glimpse of one of the most famous rock stars of the century. They were surprised to find their idols were down-to-earth and unpretentious, generous with their time and conversation. More than sixty candid photographs from their stay—most previously unpublished—accompany reminiscences from fans who got to know the McCartneys in the Crescent City. From taking the McCartney children to Mardi Gras to catching a ride from Paul, these stories and photographs show Paul and Linda at their most genuine.

Author and musician John Taylor fell in love with the music and style of the Beatles during their famous appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. As a teenager, he picked up a bass guitar just like Paul’s and has been playing ever since. A chance meeting outside of Sea-Saint Studio led to a months-long acquaintance with Paul and Linda McCartney and scores of pictures and conversations. Taylor plays with the Louisiana-based group The Meanies and lives outside of New Orleans.

I enjoyed the rare
By DH
Book arrived earlier than expected. Much smaller than I expected, but my fault, I didn't read the description close enough. Having said that, I enjoyed the rare, previously unseen photos. Nowadays that's becoming harder to come by, so I'd never want to discourage people from sharing those with fellow fans. A fun book about a period for Paul and Linda mostly known about only through news clips and their own released home videos. So it's always nice to hear firsthand accounts from others who were there.

Have the book now, not enough money then.
By beatcall
I was stationed in Pensacola, Florida when Wings were in New Orleans. I wished I'd had the money to go there and try to see them. Like today's enlisted people, there's no extra money, especially when you're married with children. I had to have this book.
