About the Author
One of the country's top plein air landscape painters, Michael is noted for his expressive color and for truly "capturing the moment." He has been invited repeatedly to the Sedona Plein Air Festival, Grand Canyon National Park and Zion National Park invitationals. In 2012, he was an invited artist in PleinAir Magazine's First Annual Plein Air Convention & Expo in Las Vegas. Michael was awarded Master Pastellist status by Pastel Artists Canada in 2008, and he is a Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society, the Pastel Society of America and the Pastel Society of New Mexico as well as a juried member of Oil Painters of America. His paintings have appeared in The Artist's Magazine, Pastel Journal, American Artist and Fine Art Connoisseur (PleinAir Magazine) and are in many corporate and private collections. Master of plein air landscape.

Michael Chesley Johnson is a master of plein air painting in pastels and oil. He suggests the landscape rather than attempt to paint so that every detail is present. His focus on major shapes and forms makes the painting come alive. Excellent selections from the Southwest and the Northeast create a handsome collection in this book.

Wonderful Plein Air Paintings.

This is a book of a good number of Johnson's plein air paintings in both oil and pastel. I am a big fan of his work ( and instruction) so was delighted to find this book. The paintings are well photographed and show up beautifully on my Kindelfire HD7. ( the details enlarge quite well.) This is a picture book- not an instruction book. You get some inspiring quotes, the title , the medium and a bit more information, but the paintings are the true focus.
I love having it handy and find myself viewing it repeatedly. A true delight. Thank you MCJ! Your work is so inspiring.

Although its beginning was a little more complicated, The Man from UNCLE was conceived quite bluntly as a TV version of James Bond. It became an entity in its own right when development fell to the enormously creative Sam Rolfe, who single-handedly devised the complicated, multi-faceted organisation that was the United Network Command for Law Enforcement--UNCLE. The end result was the most dynamic, complex, fast-paced, action-packed, sexy, and exhilarating adventure show of the 20th century; as the first television series to employ the hand-held camera, the faddish, youth-orientated shows that preceded it moved at a snail's pace in comparison. And with the casting of a co-star who became the most popular MGM actor of all time, UNCLE thawed the Cold War and created the buddy movie.

But with the death of President Kennedy, the brave new world of youthful hope and co-operation that UNCLE represented had taken a severe blow. As a result, The Man from UNCLE became less of a hopeful dream and more an escapist fantasy in the years to follow. UNCLE wanted global peace too, but instead of growing its hair long and throwing flowers around, it wore a dinner suit and used smoke bombs and bullets!

But 1966 was to get wilder still. The Batman TV series had arrived in January, 1966 as a mid-season replacement that, following dire test screenings, ABC had no great hopes for. This colorful and stylish parody of the comic-book character delighted kids and adults alike with its bizarre confrontations between the preposterous cowled boy scout Batman and his obnoxious do-gooding student Robin and marvellous performances from familiar Hollywood character actors as the heroes' eccentric adversaries. It became television's second major fad of the 1960s.

The primary legacy of the Batman TV series was to give everybody in film and TV permission to go completely loopy, and late '60s film and TV still looks quite bizarre because of it. Nowhere was this more evident than in the wacky TV series The Monkees, a half-hour freestyle sit-com imitating the madcap style of the Beatles' feature films. The show was the precursor of the pop video, and the birth of the manufactured boy band, and the onscreen spot gags, parodies, and imaginings of the four leads pre-date series such as The Simpsons and Family Guy by decades. There had been nothing like these three series before. It would be well over twenty years before anyone dared attempt such levels of creativity again.

Despite the above, he doesn't live in the past, because he's bought the best of it into the future with him, and he prefers his i-pad, i-pod, DVDs, and big screen TV to vinyl, censorship, and two-channel television.

Great new take on three classic shows!

I just received my copy and begun going through it. So far the writing has been intelligent and insightful. It is clear to me the author very much loves these shows. The book is not so much about learning anything new about the creation of the shows, but rather a fresh perspective on their importance relative to their place in pop culture. The book features an episode guide with thoughtful commentary and analysis for each episode of all three shows. It is full of great pictures too. If you are fan of these shows (and as is the whole point of the book it is impossible to be a fan of one and not all three) it is well worth the price.

When television was fun!

Jon Abbott's earlier works on Irwin Allen and Stephen J.Cannell occupy pride of place on my bookshelf. Here he tackles a trio of American 1960's television shows which became pop culture phenomena - 'The Man From U.N.C.L.E.', 'Batman' and 'The Monkees'. With an U.N.C.L.E. movie on the horizon and interest in the 'Batman' show reignited by the Blu-Ray/D.V.D. release and 'Batman 66' comic, now is the right time to read this book. He does not disappoint. Each episode comes under review. His analysis of what made these shows hits is intelligent and thought-provoking. There is none of the snarky tone to be found in other similar works. At the same time, he is not overly-reverential. His section on U.N.C.L.E. is worth the cost of the book alone. How refreshing to see the much-maligned Season 3 getting praise where he considers it due while Season 1 ( generally by regarded as the show's highpoint ) is reassessed. How about a sequel, Jon?

This book focuses on three definite series of the sixties, ones who were
often imitated and paved the way for other series.

First part - The Spy craze - The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (and its spinoff The
Girl from U.N.C.L.E.) (I have never seen this show until now. I have heard of
it and I have now purchased the first season to watch)

Second part - The Superhero craze - Batman
(I used to love this show and would watch reruns as a child; I loved the Joker,
The Riddler, Catwoman, Egghead, The Penguin and The Bookworm

Third part - The Boy Band Craze - The Monkees
(again another favorite from childhood as you would watch these zany adventures
with these guys and loved the songs, still do!)

Each part has a full season by season episode guide with summaries and names of the cast and
crew for each show. An interesting look back at this unique shows and each history behind each
of the shows. Also includes other books by the author. Must read if you love these shows!

Pierre-Paul Prud'hon (1758 – 1823) was a French Romantic painter and draughtsman best known for his allegorical paintings and portraits. Very low-quality Art Books

This book was extremely disappointing. Unfortunately, Amazon will not allow a zero-star review to be submitted.
There seems to be an underground industry of desktop authors whose books are produced by cutting and pasting images and text from the Internet at low resolution, slapping a higher quality image on the cover, and then marketing the results on Amazon. This is the second such book that I've purchased of this type, and I will forever avoid so called Art books from anyone except known and reputable publishing houses. I'll be returning this home-made product as soon as possible.

Fun for adults, seniors, or just about anyone.

I am addicted to adult coloring books, but there started to be a sameness about them so I decided to try something different. So far I have just used gel glitter pens, felt tip pens and crayons. I do find it more challenging that regular adult "fill in the blanks" coloring books. I am going to invest in finger paints soon.
I also like the spiral-bound, perforated, heavy weight paper.
The second picture of the flowers was done with brush pens and chalk for the background.

This is a great book. The paper is a really high quality that holds the paint well. I love the simple illustrations that are a great starting point for my own creativity. I also like the fact that the pages are perforated so I can easily tear them out when I am done with a picture. I expect to get many hours of relaxing fun from this book.

Cuz I'm Happy

You have probably heard about all the craze with coloring books that swept the nation like a plague so much so that the LA times and major newspapers have to write about it. Oh well, it's no different from you being obsessed with say knitting, scrabble, or whatever hobby you may have. I for one, don't color much although when I saw those coloring books during my trips to the Michael Crafts Store, I was tempted to want to buy one. I can see the reason why this hobby would catch on though like fire for I myself am a hobbyist. I PAINT. However, I haven't painted much lately as you can see life is hectic. The irony of it though is it is exactly when we are so busy that we need to pull back and go back to that peaceful, creative and relaxing place within us. And this is what painting does for me. Quick it is. Just a long list of things to think about. Not a book more of an article. She has good information but you need to research much more then this basic list. Good thing it is free. The writing is horrible, with so many errors.

It reads more like a collection of short essays

To start off, I wasn't expecting a whole lot going into this. What I came out with was an interesting enough read, with a few pieces of information that were new to me. That said, it wasn't groundbreaking, and much of it wasn't even really about Sailor Moon, but rather the overall environment. There was not necessarily a clear point to the work, and it got a bit muddied in all its comparisons to other franchises and constant name-dropping (even in cases where it really was not as relevant as the writer perhaps thought). It reads more like a collection of short essays, loosely tied together by a thin thread.

Not awful by any means, and an easy read -- a nice distraction from some heavier stuff I'd been reading. But definitely not worth the price for what it was.

Disappointing...

This is more of a brain dump of the anime industry in the 90s with some Sailor Moon sprinkled in than a book giving any secrets about Sailor Moon. The chapter about Sailor Moon Crystal is just rumors with no sources. The IndieGoGo campaign promised at least 5 "interviews" with prominent figures in the Sailor Moon industry, but only includes a sentence or two from a couple Sailor Moon fans and someone from Cloverway. Very disappointing compared to what was promised and hyped.

I really didn't care for Incredible Untold Story, it felt long winded and he seemed to really focus on a lot of non-Moon topics. There's a chapter dedicated to comparing SM to Harry Potter, another to SM and Star Wars, one talks about how Sailor Moon could have been a Disney princess. Chapter 9 goes into detail about how SM got on Toonami, it was really the only worthwhile chapter IMO.

On the other hand, I really enjoyed Sailor Moon Reflections written by the DiC director and voice of Melvin, Roland Parliament. It goes into detail about the casting process and behind the scenes stuff for the DiC dub. I know not everyone is a fan of the DiC dub, but I recommend it if you are. There's a chapter where the voice actresses (inners and Luna) talk about their experience doing the dub.

In Realism after Modernism, Devin Fore challenges the widely accepted view that this period represented a return to traditional realist representation and its humanist postulates. Interwar realism, he argues, did not reinstate its nineteenth-century predecessor but invoked realism as a strategy of mimicry that anticipates postmodernist pastiche. Through close readings of a series of works by German artists and writers of the period, Fore investigates five artistic devices that were central to interwar realism. He analyzes Bauhaus polymath László Moholy-Nagy's use of linear perspective; three industrial novels riven by the conflict between the temporality of capital and that of labor; Brecht's socialist realist plays, which explore new dramaturgical principles for depicting a collective subject; a memoir by Carl Einstein that oscillates between recollection and self-erasure; and the idiom of physiognomy in the photomontages of John Heartfield. Fore's readings reveal that each of these "rehumanized" works in fact calls into question the very categories of the human upon which realist figuration is based. Paradoxically, even as the human seemed to make a triumphal return in the culture of the interwar period, the definition of the human and the integrity of the body were becoming more tenuous than ever before. Interwar realism did not hearken back to earlier artistic modes but posited new and unfamiliar syntaxes of aesthetic encounter, revealing the emergence of a human subject quite unlike anything that had come before.

Poor binding on paperback

I can't speak for the hardcover, but the binding on my copy of the paperback is very poor. I'm only a couple of pages in, and already the pages are popping out. I do underline and write notes in my books, but am otherwise quite gentle.

Content so far is excellent. My advice is to try the hardcover-- hopefully the binding is better.

About the Author
My name is Bryan Nowak. Photography has been a life-long passion for but has taken on even greater significance as I’ve grown older and appreciate more deeply the beauty that God graces me with daily. From His majestic mountains to the daintiest flower His creation sings out glorious praise. I hear it in the gentle breezes and the rustling grasses. I hear nature’s song in the birds of the air and the crashing of the waves. Capturing this visually is my heart’s desire so that you too may see the wonder of creation, but more importantly the magnificence of the Creator. I live in northeast Georgia where I am happily married to my high school sweetheart, Sharon. She and I share the same love for God, nature, hiking, travel and photography. I have three godly children – Kristen, Terri and Kevin – who have married spouses with similar faith convictions. I am also presently blessed with three beautiful grandchildren and a fourth on the way. While my professional career began in the field of computers and technology, including 22 years with NCR Corporation, I have been serving the Lord in full-time vocational Christian ministry since 2001. Photography is my passion after faith and family.

The place is magical and unlike any other - so it seems like "going home" year after year

Since our family owns a time share in the Gatlinburg area, I have been to Cades Cove often. The place is magical and unlike any other - so it seems like "going home" year after year. Photographer Bryan Nowak has captured the beauty of every season in this incredible book of amazing photos. Suggested techniques and locations for taking one's own photographs included in the book have me anticipating even more my annual summer trip!

If you have been to Cades Cove and know the breathtaking beauty firsthand, this book will be a favorite. If you have never been, this book will cause you to get busy real quick - packing your luggage with camera in hand!

Buy this book! You will thank God for this amazing place known as Cade's Cove and for the gift of Nowak's latest artistic offering!

Disappointing

I agree completely with DirkOX's review that these are very ordinary photos, printed poorly. He wrote that they look like they were printed on an inkjet, and I would add on cheap paper. There is no publisher noted anywhere, and the last page says it was made on Feb 1, 2016, which is when I ordered it. .???
Many photos are not in sharp focus, even the large cover photo which wraps around front and back covers. As written about another one of Mr. Nowak's photo guides, this is not a book for photographers.
Also, the multiple 5 star reviews are suspiciously similar in style and content, all written over a short period of time just after the book came out. Hmmmm...

The photos look like as if someone printed them with an inkjet printer

I cant share the excitement of the other reviewers here. The locations aren't that exciting at all and the quality of the photos do not meet the standards you might expect from a professional. I was quite disapointed when I saw the print quality of the book itself. The photos look like as if someone printed them with an inkjet printer. I m giving 2 stars because the books are cheap.
