I thought this book was good in that it gives readers a solid sense of what can be done via the photo essay. I got a lot of ideas - and appreciate the info. I would have given this 5 stars if the author had included information about photo sizing for digital platforms like Kindle.

I originally purchased Mr. Howard's guide as a resource to assist my high-school daughter in exploring ways to use her camera. After reading the material I am inspired to write my own "photo essay" to sell here on Amazon. In addition, I emailed Mr. Howard a question and he responded back with some excellent suggestions. Pretty cool pictures of the Alaskan scenery with a few glimpses of animals. It works great as a calendar for work. I was hoping for a few cooler, or more exciting pictures. But every picture is taken somewhere different, also labeling at the bottom right of the pictures are the locations the photos were taken.

The photos were original, but also feel used. Its the same old picture of the alaskan mountains, or moose. Just used at a different angle.

All of the photos are very vibrant in color, but a few almost feel completely edited as far as the color contrast of the mountains versus the water.

Musicians in the 16th century had a vastly different understanding of the structure and performance of music than today's performers. In order to transform inexpressively notated music into passionate declamation, Renaissance singers treated scores freely, and it was expected that each would personalize the music through various modifications, which included ornamentation. Their role was one of musical re-creation rather than of simple interpretation--the score represented a blueprint, not a master plan, upon which they as performer built the music. As is now commonly recognized, this flexible approach to scores changed over the centuries; the notation on the page itself became an ostensible musical Urtext and performers began following it much more closely, their sole purpose being to reproduce what was thought to be the composer's intentions. Yet in recent years, scholars and performers are once again freeing themselves from the written page--but the tools for doing so have long been out of reach.

With Passionate Voice gives these tools to modern singers of Renaissance music, enabling them to learn and master the art of "re-creative singing." Providing a much-needed historically-informed perspective, author Robert Toft discusses the music of composers ranging from Marchetto Cara to John Dowland in the context of late Renaissance rhetoric, modal theory (and its antecedents in language), and performance traditions. Focusing on period practice in England and Italy, the two countries which produced the music of greatest interest to today's performers, Toft reconstructs the style of sung delivery through contemporary treatises on music, rhetoric and oratory. Toft remains faithful to the ways these principles were explained in the period, and thus breathes new life into this vital art form. About the Author

Robert Toft has pursued a career as a vocal coach, accompanist, and researcher. He has published five books on the performance practices of singing between the 16th and 19th centuries and has given master classes, workshops, and lectures on historically-informed performance in Australia, Britain, Canada, Ireland, Switzerland, and the USA. He is Professor of Music at Western University in London, Canada.

Opening the inner sanctums of 'classical' music, releasing performers from taboos formerly untouchable

Robert Toft's newest book is outstanding. His earlier book Bel Canto opens a vista of options to the performer in aspects of interpretation usually considered off limits. The accepted faithful rendition of the score in all its infinite details and peculiarities is shown to be too limiting on creativity to be justified for 19th century performance practice. This book WITH PASSIONATE VOICE moves the playing field back to the 16th century. Again traditional taboos are dissected, such as, when to apply musica ficta, how to choose which notes to sing/play, when NOT to seek consistency across a score, when good performers were expected to 'correct' a composer's compositional errors. Especially valuable for the modern reader a bit hazy on 16th century concepts of music theory is his Appendix reviewing in plain English accepted assumptions about solmization, hexachords, tones and the like. These two books should revolutionize interpretation of 'the classics' in years to come.

Reasonable pedagogy for renaissance singing

Lots of good info here about early singing. He sms to know more about English singing than other styles. He's done some serious research for some years. I don't always buy his conclusions, but one can draw their own and still appreciate shady he lays out before you.

Charlotte Fiell is a leading design historian who has written numerous bestselling books on all aspects of design, from industrial products to graphic communications. She studied at the British Institute in Florence and at Camberwell College of Arts, London, where she received a BA(Hons) in the History of Drawing and Printmaking with Material Science. She later trained at Sotheby's Institute, also in London.

What an amazing book full of beautiful stuff!

A fascinating and informative guide to the highest quality designs for cooking and dining from all over the world. It features not only page after page of elegant cookware but also every kind of utensil you could possibly imagine. There is also drool-worthy flatware, dinnerware, glassware and all kinds of other products. Really liked how there are not only tons of great contemporary designs but also famous designs from the past which have stood the test of time. Each entry has an interesting explanation of why each product is the best design of its kind. It also functions as a really useful book for gifting inspiration too!

WARNING DVD Installs MALWARE!!!

The Book and Instructional Material is very good, BUT after installing the TnT2 software from the included DVD my Norton Antivirus picked up a Malware called PUA.findwide infection on my laptop running windows 8.1. My Norton Antivirus was able to quarantine it and I hope I don't have any issues. I also Puchased another Ultimate easy Guitar book and the same thing happened with that DVD install of the TnT2 program...so I am sure that this DVD series is to blame.

About the Author

Jeremy Yudkin was born in England and educated in England and the United States. He received his BA and MA in Classical and Modern Languages from Cambridge University and his PhD in Historical Musicology from Stanford University. He has taught at San Francisco State University, the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, Harvard University, Oxford University, and (since 1982) at Boston University, where he is Professor of Music and associated faculty of the Department of Judaic Studies and the Center for African American Studies. From 2006 to 2010 he also served as visiting professor of music at Oxford University. A recipient of fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, Boston University’s Society of Fellows, the Camargo Foundation, and the Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation, he has written articles for the Journal of the American Musicological Society, the Journal of Musicology, the Musical Quarterly, Musica Disciplina, American Music, and Music and Letters, and contributed to several volumes of essays. His research specialties include the Middle Ages, early Beethoven, jazz, and the music of the Beatles. A noted lecturer, Professor Yudkin has given talks and presented papers across the United States and in Europe and Russia. He is the author of eight books on various aspects of music and music history, including Music in Medieval Europe (1989), The Lenox School of Jazz (2006), and Miles Davis: Miles Smiles and the Invention of Post Bop (2008).

Check that you don't need CD as well

My daughter needed the CD that went with this as well. We returned it unused for 1/3 the price paid. If it had the CD it would have been a great buy. Check before buying if that is required.

No beating around the bush. Absolutely concise.

Note: I am an individual that has not owned any houses yet and therefore a complete novice. My partner and I have been planning to purchase a small home and therefore I really needed a book to help me out as I am really blind towards design and essentially an uncreative person. The author has adopted a rather terse tone and hence the book is extremely concise. Although the book does contain a few tips that may be considered general knowledge, the author has been able to cater to a wide audience as she gives advice about many styles. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to those who are absolutely new to design and wish to have a quick read.

It’s a good read but I expected to see sample photos

It’s an enjoyable read and learned new stuff such as colors. I think it’s a fact that for men there are only basic choices of colors. I’m thinking of repainting our living room and my home office so I am currently in the process of learning what colors blend with what and so on. This book gives me ideas and jotted down some of them but I expected some photos so I can compare ideas and choices. I don’t know what Ricoco is so it would have been nice if there was a photo demonstrating the point. Nonetheless, a good read especially for someone who has zero to limited knowledge in interior design. The bonus video at the end is a good one. Talks more about furniture and art pieces that maximizes space.

Attracted to the rich ceremonial life and unique architecture of the New Mexico pueblos, many early-twentieth-century artists depicted Pueblo peoples, places, and culture in paintings. These artists’ encounters with Pueblo Indians fostered their awareness of Native political struggles and led them to join with Pueblo communities to champion Indian rights. In this book, art historian Sascha T. Scott examines the ways in which non-Pueblo and Pueblo artists advocated for American Indian cultures by confronting some of the cultural, legal, and political issues of the day.

Scott closely examines the work of five diverse artists, exploring how their art was shaped by and helped to shape Indian politics. She places the art within the context of the interwar period, 1915–30, a time when federal Indian policy shifted away from forced assimilation and toward preservation of Native cultures. Through careful analysis of paintings by Ernest L. Blumenschein, John Sloan, Marsden Hartley, and Awa Tsireh (Alfonso Roybal), Scott shows how their depictions of thriving Pueblo life and rituals promoted cultural preservation and challenged the pervasive romanticizing theme of the “vanishing Indian.” Georgia O’Keeffe’s images of Pueblo dances, which connect abstraction with lived experience, testify to the legacy of these political and aesthetic transformations.

Scott makes use of anthropology, history, and indigenous studies in her art historical narrative. She is one of the first scholars to address varied responses to issues of cultural preservation by aesthetically and culturally diverse artists, including Pueblo painters. Beautifully designed, this book features nearly sixty artworks reproduced in full color.

Great travel coloring book for all ages. Makes Creativity Shine!

Of course being 22 I own mostly, what you would consider, ‘Adult’ Coloring Books. I was sent this book along with a few others and I can honestly say for some reason this is probably my favorite above most. The photos are simple yet cute and the book is small yet portable. While other designs in other coloring books can take up to hours to finish this one takes significantly less. I actually quite enjoy this as I find other coloring books take so long they lose my interest yet this one never does.

The colored pencils I used on this coloring book were actually tricolor pencils. They are not super cheap but since I color and draw so much I wanted something more unique to add to my collection. I found these colors very fun to use with this book and to play with blending and not blending the tricolors.

For each page I would choose my color scheme and go. I found myself wanting to keep going in this book rather than switch to others. I would highly recommend this book to anyone of any age and I think it would be a great stocking stuffer.

Can not get enough of the Sprites!

This is just so cute and fun. The book has several different sprites wearing different Garden outfits. Its fun and enjoyable and relaxing to sit and color.
