About the Author
KRISTIN NICHOLAS is the author of eight books on knitting and embroidery. A colorist at heart, she brings her love of bold and beautiful color combinations to her knitting, embroidery, crocheting, needlework, sewing, crafting, gardening, interior decoration, photography, painting, and pottery. For sixteen years, Kristin was the creative director of Classic Elite Yarns, where she honed her skills of developing product lines, graphic design, and sales and marketing. Vogue Knitting crowned her a "Master Knitter of the '90s." Since 2001, she has been working as an author, book illustrator, and product designer. In addition, Kristin has been a contributing designer to many other knitting books. She lives on Leyden Glen Farm, a working sheep farm in western Massachusetts, with her husband and daughter.

First, let me explain what drew my attention to this book: when looking for craft books, my family and I are quite the crafty bunch, this book came across the "suggested books" section. It was right along the knitting, crochet and quilting books. Don't get me wrong, the pictures in this book are magnificent, colorful and pleasing to the eye. However, I do believe this publication belongs in the genre of design rather than crafts. There are hardly any suggestions for the replications of the designs illustrated. If you are looking for a book of crafts, this is not for you. For a book of pictures that show the finished product regarding design of individual rooms of your home, this may be the book for you.

My beige phase is officially OVER thanks to this book!

I received a copy of "Crafting A Colorful Home" from the publisher, Roost Books, for review and I couldn't wait to tell you about it! In "Crafting A Colorful Home" Kristin Nicholas guides you on how to not just decorate your home, but to build a home that reflects your personality.
She takes you through your entire home, room by room, from the front entry to the back patio and everything in between with craft projects you can make, painting techniques that you can use on your walls and so much more!
To me, a colorful home is a home that is put together over time. It makes me think of my grandma's house, with her afghans, favorite throw pillows, vintage wall art, and kitchy dishes. A beautiful combination of old and new!
To say that I loved this book would not be strong enough. I am a firm believer in crafting a home that is a reflection of your personality. For me, that has always included a lot of beige. My sister teased me for YEARS about being in my "beige phase". Lately though, the beige has had lots of rusty reds, pops of watery blues, and earthy grays.
If you have a home that you want to add some colorful, personal touches to, but you don't know where to begin, the author advises that you start by selecting colors. Not sure what colors work together? She's got you covered! Ms. Nicholas teaches you all about analogous color combinations, complimentary color combinations, and tonal combinations. You'll be able to pick your colors like a pro!
Once you've selected your colors, she advises you to collect items that include those colors for inspiration. You can look for inspiration in decorating magazines, you can look for fabrics and collect swatches, you could even take a photo of something you like at a restaurant or store.
When you have your inspiration items collected, create a moodboard - either a physical one using a corkboard like the author shows in the book OR you can create a virtual moodboard on a website like Pinterest.

Once you've selected your inspiration THEN what can you expect? She walks you through your entire home with tips and ideas that you can actually use.
Want to know how to do a special paint treatment on your walls? She'll show you how to mix the colors, how to make a stamp to create a pattern on your wall, how to paint a dragged wall, how to paint a mural, and how to colorwash a wall.
She has projects for every room of the house. My favorite projects are the felted wool pot holders for the kitchen, the pom pom appliqué pillow, the picture frame tray, the toran, and the embroidery hoop hanging lanterns.

Color! Color! Color!

Kristin Nicholas is all about color, and I LOVE color! I rarely purchase books anymore as I have plenty, but this one wasn't available through the shop at which I work, and I've adored her work for a long time. Wonderful photography and very interesting reading, as well as lovely models in some of the photos (cats, sheep...) Fun techniques to brighten up my home, and I already have a couple of them in the works. Love this!
