About the Author
Broadcast journalist Brian McFadden began his fascination with Republic Pictures as a child, when Republic was one of the few studios providing movies to television. (Major studios still considered TV “The Enemy!”) Throughout his career, McFadden never missed an opportunity to expand his research on “The Little Studio in the Valley,” and its tremendous contributions … not just to serials and westerns … but also to feature films. In addition to "Republic Mysteries, The Serial Studio’s Whodunits," McFadden is the author of its companion volume, "Republic Horrors, The Serial Studio’s Chillers," as well as a highly-praised book about the iconic British horror film producer, Amicus.The author and his wife live in the Somerset Hills of New Jersey.

The author does his usual bang up job of summarizing and evaluating a rare and seldom
seen group of b pictures from the Golden Age of the movies. This follow up to his
REPUBLIC HORRORS showcases the mystery programmers by "the little studio in the
valley",and does it in McFadden's nearly patented and entertainingly informative style.
If your meat is Hollywood in the forties,and you love the aura of obscure but fun,
low budget,but well produced mysteries and crime films,you'll find this as helpful and
fun as any book on the subject to date. The author's love of the movies he covers
is obvious,and he does not,thankfully,apologize for it.Rather, his enthusiasm is in-
fectious and takes you along in the passenger seat for a solid ride.Well illustrated
and researched,MYSTERIES is destined to be an indispensible reference work
about the output of one of the iconic studios of the era. At the same time, the
book remains a personal reflection of a lost but happily remembered time.
Fortunately,some of the films discussed are becoming available (through
some streaming services)for the first time in half a century,or more. And,
with the author's help,we can all begin to enjoy these rarely shown gems
anew. Highly recommended for fans of classic American film,and lovers
of a sadly neglected genre.

The author's passion for the subject matter is apparent! He certainly shares my enthusiasm for this genre of movies, and it brought back memories for me. Definitely a great trip back in time. Well done!
