In Digital Performance, Steve Dixon traces the evolution of these practices, presents detailed accounts of key practitioners and performances, and analyzes the theoretical, artistic, and technological contexts of this form of new media art. Dixon finds precursors to today's digital performances in past forms of theatrical technology that range from the deus ex machina of classical Greek drama to Wagner's Gesamtkunstwerk (concept of the total artwork), and draws parallels between contemporary work and the theories and practices of Constructivism, Dada, Surrealism, Expressionism, Futurism, and multimedia pioneers of the twentieth century.

For a theoretical perspective on digital performance, Dixon draws on the work of Philip Auslander, Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, Jean Baudrillard, and others. To document and analyze contemporary digital performance practice, Dixon considers changes in the representation of the body, space, and time. He considers virtual bodies, avatars, and digital doubles, as well as performances by artists including Stelarc, Robert Lepage, Merce Cunningham, Laurie Anderson, Blast Theory, and Eduardo Kac. He investigates new media's novel approaches to creating theatrical spectacle, including virtual reality and robot performance work, telematic performances in which remote locations are linked in real time, Webcams, and online drama communities, and considers the "extratemporal" illusion created by some technological theater works. Finally, he defines categories of interactivity, from navigational to participatory and collaborative. Dixon challenges dominant theoretical approaches to digital performance -- including what he calls postmodernism's denial of the new -- and offers a series of boldly original arguments in their place.

Good research tool

This detailed book goes through the history of digital performance until about the 1990's. It has been very useful for my thesis research which focused in dance and digital media. Sometimes I found the organization a bit difficult for my area of focus, but I liked the way the chapters were grouped regardless. The tissue-thin pages were filled with well-documented and organized data. A good book to have in your library if you research this particular field. Not for light reading (unless you are Hermione Granger).

which is pretty much the only way to judge sheet music books

Ten of the eleven songs are in the same key as the recording, which is pretty much the only way to judge sheet music books. If you want to throw on the CD and play along, that's kind of important, right? All but 'Fault Lines' (book is a half step lower) are in the same key, so not bad!

Very nice book!

Artwork is phenomenal! Lines are strong and crisp, overall style is cute and NOT filled with useless paisleys like other so-called "dinosaur" coloring books. If you just want to concentrate on coloring dinosaurs this is the book you want.

Paper quality is nice. Seems to take pencils well and even markers so that they don't feather a lot. (alcohol based markers still will bleed through)

Speaking of markers, the only thing I would complain about this books is that it is double side printed - not friendly for markers. I understand it is intended for pencils(says on the back cover, not sure if book designers really did intend for pencils only or not), and is a smaller book compared to big ones out there but I would certainly buy it again if that change happens.

I usually look for perforation too, but again since this is smaller/thinner book getting the book completely flat is not much of an issue. Again, if the future prints come with this feather it'd be nice too! Or book 2!

About the Author
Rev. Brian Hughes, MDiv, BCC, is a chaplain certified through the Association of Professional Chaplains, where he serves as Education Committee chair. He attended Princeton Theological Seminary and completed nine units of clinical pastoral education in New York City; Temple, Texas; and Phoenix, Arizona. He has served as a hospital staff chaplain in Phoenix, Arizona; Irving, Texas; and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He recently authored Handbook of Evidence-Based Best Practice for Spiritual Care Provision for those with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) for the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED).

Machine Gun Tempo of Deep Observations

One of the most fun and insightful books I have ever read!

I would recommend this to people who are interested in communication of ideas. And that is most of us! It is also a book for those who want an example of a totally new type of book!
My first idea was that I should underline all the significant statements, as I usually do. I immediately encountered several deep ideas. But then I discovered a problem. I would have to underline 99% of all the statements! The book is filled with one worthy observation after the other, many on each page. No fluff. This book does not waste your time. It gets right to the points. I love the stream of interesting insights.
Friends who have looked at my copy have the same reaction, Wow! I want to read this after you are done. Some of us are directly envious about the fun graphics quality, which is a dominant part of the book. We wish we could write a `management' book in this exciting style. The graphics are well designed, and make the absorption of the deep points an extra pleasure. I guess it has not been economic to make books a colourful as this earlier, so we built up habits of mainly-text books. Times are changing. This is a book for people who love their iPhone! Who love great and useful design. Books will never be the same, and other books look distinctly boring by comparison!

The medium is not the message but in this case it is part of it. The book is full of interesting observations and triggers a constant evaluation of our worldview. At the same time every aspect of it is designed creating a deep user experience while reading. Certainly a must own!

About the Author
Penelope J. E. Davies is Associate Professor at the University of Texas, Austin. She is a scholar of Greek and Roman art and architecture as well as a field archaeologist. She is author of Death and the Emperor: Roman Imperial Funerary Monuments from Augustus to Marcus Aurelius, winner of the Vasari Award.

Walter B. Denny is a Professor of Art History at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. In addition to exhibition catalogues, his publications include books on Ottoman Turkish carpets, textiles, and ceramics, and articles on miniature painting, architecture and architectural decoration.

Frima Fox Hofrichter is Professor and former Chair of the History of Art and Design department at Pratt Institute. She is author of Judith Leyster, A Dutch Artist in Holland’s Golden Age, which received CAA’s Millard Meiss Publication Fund Award.

Joseph Jacobs is an independent scholar, critic, and art historian of modern art in New York City. He was the curator of modern art at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, director of the Oklahoma City Art Museum, and curator of American art at The Newark Museum, Newark, New Jersey.

David L. Simon is Jetté Professor of Art at Colby College, where he received the Basset Teaching Award in 2005. Among his publications is the catalogue of Spanish and southern French Romanesque sculpture in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Cloisters.

Ann M. Roberts, Professor of Art at Lake Forest College has published essays, articles and reviews on both Northern and Italian Renaissance topics. Her research focuses on women in the Renaissance, and her most recent publication is entitled Dominican Women and Renaissance Art: The Convent of San Domenico of Pisa.

H. W. Janson was a legendary name in art history. During his long career as a teacher and scholar, he helped define the discipline through his impressive books and other publications.

About the Author
Mark Pardy is a British musician residing in the US. He has held the drum chair for musicals such as Lion King, Spamalot, Legally Blonde, Tommy, Hairspray, Smokey Joe's Cafe and many others. He has played on records by many artists including Flash, Helen Shapiro and Phil Coulter, and on cast recordings of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and Godspell. He is a member of LA trio Populuxe. A lifelong Marillion fan, this is his first book.

A necessity for any drummer or any music lover. Ian Mosley is an outstanding drummer. Talented, precise, innovative, and kind (I had the privilege of meeting him in person). Great photography. Good purchase all together. Don't think twice. You won't regret this purchase.

What a fantastic book. Included are transcriptions of drum sequences for all levels of drummers. Andy's photography is always phenomenal and truly adds flair to this book. I bought this book for my son who is a high school drummer and I can often hear him working his way through the different levels of drumming. I highly recommend for those interested in drumming and Ian Mosley as well.

It was only at the end of the 19th century, with the rise of Symbolism, that his greatness began to be recognized. Most of his work is still in Germany.

colors are off from the original paintings considerably (a good example is the duplicated Abbey in the Oakwood painting

This is a print-on-demand book, and reproduced on matte paper, so there is dot-gain which muddies the colors and general detail is soft. Also, at least one painting is reproduced twice in the book (Abbey in the Oakwood).The scans reproducing the paintings from the original negs/slides were not done as well as they could have been, colors are off from the original paintings considerably (a good example is the duplicated Abbey in the Oakwood painting, both scans in the book look like two completely different paintings as far as the color reproduction quality, when they should be identical.)

Zombies, don’t come at me.

With that said, I can definitely see where my flaws are when it comes to fighting and surviving the undead. One doesn’t realize how unprepared one is in case a zombie attack were to happen. But do not fear! The Zombie Combat Field Guide: A Coloring and Activity Book for Fighting the Living Dead is the best illustrated study book you can learn from.

Author Roger Ma detailed the guide with text and descriptive images that demonstrate what points in a zombie you must avoid to not get infected. It shows where you can give a direct attack, along with the weapons you can always use, and easily find around the house. I must say that my stock in homemade weapons is very low, but it gives me an idea of what to get on my next shopping trip. Who knew I needed a new sauce pan?

Something that I found very amusing was the multiple quizzes, throughout the guide, that help you discover your traits and abilities, and what kind of zombie fighting physique you have. At this stage, I am pretty sure I need to play more zombie games and better training skills. Zombies are not to be dealt with delicately.

It has tips for parents traveling with children, and the best way to fight a zombie while trying to protect your infant. The thought of it is just terrifying. The best way to stomp a zombie’s head is to practice, practice, and practice with the appropriate footwear and a tire. This works best if included in your fitness routine. Zombie combat is a serious sport.

I really enjoyed this zombie guide. It is different from what I’m used to reading, but a good read indeed. It has several scenarios from where to learn and imagine your zombie attack. The illustrations are helpful even if you’re not fighting zombies. All in all, this is the perfect zombie combat guide if you’re looking to survive the apocalypse and have a good time. I already recommended it to friends and they’ve taken one or two tips to be prepared.

You need this for your survival kit!

This is one for all zombie fans. And if you believe the zombie apocalypse will happen this is a must for your survival kit.

Roger Ma has included a bunch of survival tips, with pictures, to help you when the apocalypse happens. I learned fairly early on that I was not very prepared. I’d be an easy meal.

There are pages showing how to train, how to get in shape. It takes a lot of strength to take down a zombie. And the agility skills are a must if you choose to dodge and run for it. That would be best for me. But he also includes these handy tips on how to take advantage of anything close to you and make it a weapon of opportunity. You’d be surprised what would slow down a or take down a zombie.

There’s even a section for parents on how to protect your children. You can become a momma bear in no time.

I’m saving the fun quizzes and the coloring for when The Walking Dead’s new season starts this month. I’ll need some visuals to get the colors right. I have my colored pencils sharpened and ready. And I’m curious how I’ll score on those quizzes too.

So, are you ready? You might think so. I suggest you add this to your survival kit and read it often. Your life may depend on it.
