Required Reading
By John Carlton
This book far exceeded my expectations. I knew Robert Wood had access to Bary Morse's diaries, so he had some at-the-time observations by a major participant of Space:1999, but I was not prepared for the amazing array of quotes he has come up with from all of the major players from both years of the show. I felt he dealt fairly with both seasons, which is something you don't often see. I was a little worried when I saw long drawn out analysis of each first year episode, but was relieved when I saw he did the same with the second year episodes. This book is a highly recommended, balanced history of the show, detailing how each season came to be and honestly discussing the strengths and weakness of the 48 episodes produced from late 1973 to the end of 1976.

A must for any 1999 fan!
By Da_cheeze
It's as important a tome in sci-fi history as the "Star Trek Compendium"... deftly written with the author's sights clearly set at delivering the productions background and other goings-on between the cast and crew, as well as delivering the usual goods of story analysis, coverage, actors commentary, and overall history of both seasons of Space:1999.
A great book to accompany a great (and very underrated) show.

It was great to reenter the cool, futuristic world of Space:1999 again after so many years. It was really interesting to hear the opinions and memories of the people involved in making the show. I gained even more respect for the various actors in the show and the difficulties when Year 2 began. All in all, I learned a lot more about the show than I had known before.

Walkabout EuropeFrom Bardolf & Company

In the summer of 2013, professional photographer Cliff Roles went on a whirlwind "walkabout" of Europe. He covered 22 towns and cities in 15 countries over a 53-day period. Exploring the scenic islands of Crete and Santorini, Dracula's Castle in Romania, and metropolises from Istanbul to Jerusalem, Warsaw, Helsinki and Berlin, he aimed his camera at whatever struck his fancy. The results are an eclectic portfolio of familiar tourist haunts and unexpected attractions that captures a continent undergoing change as it tries to blend its ancient roots with the demands of the 21st century. Throughout, easy-going commentary and appealing images bear wit-ness to Roles' roving eye, curiosity and palpable joy in discovering the unique aspects of people, food, scenery and history he encountered.

Fortunately, I can pick up my book
By Rebecca T. Rives
I'm exhausted! Just returned from an imaginary Walkabout Europe with Cliff Roles. Through his exceptional photographs and entertaining and informative accompanying comments I have covered 22 towns in 15 countries in 53 days. Thanks to a coffee table book that documents those travels I can revisit them often.

From close-up photos of people representing all walks of life and sights from places on my bucket list I can sit here at home and transport myself to different worlds. I am touched by pictures of beggar ladies in Greece, men at the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem, and women picnicking in the rain in Helsinki. I am inspired to pull out my camera to photograph buildings with their angles and shadows as well as the busy streets of places near and far.

Walkabout Europe is a virtual feast of sights and imagery captured by an accomplished professional photographer. Mr. Roles' narratives embellish the photos, making the reader feel as if he or she is by the author's side. He also includes historical and personal information that brings each photo and place to life.

Time and lack of funds prevent my duplicating this Walkabout Europe in person. Fortunately, I can pick up my book, thumb through to the pages replicating favorite spots on my journey, and be happy. Here's to the next Walkabout!

Lovely Book
By J. Nichols
I loved Cliff's book! The stories of his travels accompanied by the beautiful photos were captivating and sure makes me wish I could visit some of the wonderful places he did--some of these cities I hadn't heard of but are as beautiful and historic as the more traveled/popular cities in Europe. Congratulations on a book fabulously done!

From the Author
In early 2013, I had a conversation with my friends, John Park and Khang Le, about our views on the importance of drawing and more specifically, the importance of design sketching. We felt having this skill was an integral part of being a designer working in the entertainment industry. Design sketching can be a quick and gestural way to describe an idea.

This book contains a collection of mechanical design sketches done over a few months. What initially started as a discussion with friends and sketching eventually led to this collection which I hope to share with you. We have decided to keep a faithful reproduction of the original Cottonwood sketchbook layouts. Besides providing that initial spark of inspiration, I feel the ideas in this book can serve as a springboard for further exploration or development. I hope you enjoy looking through these sketches as much as I enjoyed putting this collection together.

Great learning experience . . .
By JayArr
I've been working on sketching for some time now, and this book, purposely published to resemble an artist's sketchbook, is a great inspiration for me. I'm not an "artist" in the traditional sense; I do not draw to "express my emotions or feelings." I consider myself a hobbyist/illustrator; I want to draw pictures that are of recognizable things. Since Quach is a sci-fi game designer/artist, this book is mostly of "mecha", i.e., the mechanical sci-fi machines encountered in this genre. It is NOT a "how-to" book, BUT . . . if you copy and examine Quach's technique closely, you WILL learn "how to" and produce some credible drawings. I'm really enjoying my copy; it's certainly worth its purchase price to me.

Cool mecha sketchbook
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:c92111f03d340b4e00163396cf050365]]Darren Quach is a concept designer good at mechanical stuff. Actually if you check out his blog, you'll see that he's great at environment art too.

Inkworks is a 128-page hardcover, about landscape A5 size. It collects the mecha designs that Darren Quach sketches in his actual sketchbooks. So this book is designed like a sketchbook itself. All the sketches have been nicely cleaned up to remove the impressions of drawings from the opposite page picked up while scanning. I know that because there's a 18 minute Youtube video showing his original sketchbooks.

There are lots of wonderful mecha sketches included of all shapes and sizes. The style is drawn loose but the shapes and silhouettes are clear. One thing I like is there aren't any of those those Gundam or Transformer type mechas. Quach's designs are less blocky and more organic, although there are still a lot of mechanical parts involved. The mechas also look grounded with a good sense of weight and balance. There's a good mix between piloted and auto piloted ones. There are also a handful of sketches of other vehicles and spaceships.

Also included in the book are several QR codes that you can scan to bring up a video showing the drawing process. The same videos are also on the publisher Design Studio Press website. There are six and each 10 minutes long.

It's a good book for those who want to gain insight into what concept art can be when it's developing, evolving.

The perfect scratchbuilder/kitbasher's companion book! Worth every penny!
By Jonathan Lombardo
I've been following the art of Darren Quach for a couple years now online; when he'd share something new I'd save his sketch for my reference when to scratchbuilt or kitbash models. So naturally when I saw this design sketch book available for pre-order, I jumped on it.

Darren has a very unique and intriguing style of art. He weighs heavily on the mechanical side (which I love), however the build of his sketches are often biological in nature. Everything seems to have purpose and a very realistic feel to it. He is able to blend these organic characteristics perfectly with the mechanics. Darren shows us his versatile talents as he designs space suits, spaceships, android/mechs, hovercrafts, wheeled-buggies, weaponry and more.

Why this book is so important to me: Often times I lack the creative eye of an artist. I am able to sketch, build or sculpt something if I have a visual image or strong idea to work from, and this sketch book is the perfect companion to that need. Darren's designs are completely original, however you can see some subtle influences from other artists here and there, and those hints really get my creative mind flowing. What's also great about a lot of the work in this book is that it's a basic shape or design, a kind of 'jumping-off point'.. He allows the viewer to bring the sketches to life through imagination, as a true sketch book should. I have already tagged several sketches for potential scratchbuilds and kitbashing sessions.

Darren's sketch book now sits either on my workbench or among my collection of Ma.K./SF3D books by artists Kow Yokoyama, Makoto Kobayashi and Max Watanabe. Over the years I've purchased several sketch books by various artists (or collections featuring many artists), and Darren Quach's first release absolutely belongs on the top of the list. If you find yourself a fan of these subjects or a fan of the mechanics featured in the video game Hawken (Darren Quach worked alongside Khang Le and John Park), this book is simply a must-have.

The Mongol Century: Visual Cultures of Yuan China, 1271-1368, by Shane McCausland

The Mongol Century explores the visual world of China's Yuan dynasty (1271–1368), the spectacular but relatively short-lived regime founded by Khubilai Khan, regarded as the pre-eminent khanate of the Mongol empire.

This book illuminates the Yuan era – full of conflicts and complex interactions between Mongol power and Chinese heritage – by delving into the visual history of its culture, considering how Mongol governance and values imposed a new order on China's culture and how a sedentary, agrarian China posed specific challenges to the Mongols' militarist and nomadic lifestyle.

Shane McCausland explores how an unusual range of expectations and pressures were placed on Yuan culture: the idea that visual culture could create cohesion across a diverse yet hierarchical society, while balancing Mongol desires for novelty and display with Chinese concerns about posterity.

Although in recent years exhibitions have begun to open up the inherent paradoxes of Yuan culture, this is the first book in English to adopt a comprehensive approach. It incorporates a broad range of visual media of the East Asia region to reconsider the impact Mongol culture had in China, from urban architecture and design to tomb murals and porcelain, and from calligraphy and printed paper money to stone sculpture. Fresh and invigorating, The Mongol Century explores, in fascinating detail, the visual culture of this brief but captivating era of East Asian history.

Review
[McCausland] has mined the publications on this short, 100-year dynasty, including contemporary and recent periodical studies, to give a fuller and respectful understanding to this period; he goes deeply into historical events to give readers a rich view of China during this era of foreign occupation. (CHOICE)

Review
This book take on one of the most fascinating of China's dynasties, the Mongol Yuan, presenting an overarching study of its cultural complexity, illuminated by the visual arts. McCausland uses the capital's cityscape, paintings and and objects as entries into seven larger themes that range from the nature of Mongol urbanism to the global branding of the Mongols through the widespread export of blue-and-white porcelain. McCausland is a nimble writer and he has crafted a much more granular and balanced view of this accomplished and flawed dynasty than anything so far published in English ... a must-read. (Patricia Berger, Professor of Chinese Art, University of California, Berkeley)|One of the first reliable social histories of Yuan-dynasty art and a useful contribution to Chinese art history. (Morris Rossabi, Distinguished Professor of History at the City University of New York and Adjunct Professor of Chinese and Inner Asian History at Columbia University)|This s an important contribution to the study of the Mongol-Yuan period in China. Using a wide variety of sources, Shane McCausland has not only written a general study of Yuan-dynasty visual and material culture, he has also created a fine introduction to the Mongol period in China. He makes clear the poly-ethnic nature of Yuan society and redresses the view that the Mongols had little impact on Chinese civilization ... McCausland has achieved his aim of drawing out the distinctiveness of Yuan culture. The Mongol Centuryis a fascinating entrée into what it meant to live in Yuan-period China. (David Ake Sensabaugh, Ruth and Bruce Dayton Curator of Asian Art, Yale University Art Gallery)

The Yuan had a distinctive art culture reflecting the multiple ethnicities of their empire. Tough text, wonderful illustrations.
By lyndonbrecht
This is an academic study which argues that the Yuan Dynasty had a sophisticated, culturally aware aesthetic that reflected the multiethnic aspect of the Mongol empire. The book is therefore a kind of academic argument, a quite good one, that counters the traditional view that the Yuan were materialistic and uninterested in the arts. McCausland's writing is excellent, so even if the argument does not interest you, the text might still be worthwhile.

To understand the book fully one needs some background in the arts in China. I barely understood some of the complexities (a seemingly innocent painting can be full of subversive references), although I've had a couple of graduate classes in Chinese art. The artwork presented in the book is simply outstanding. An interesting aspect is some of the works are in Chinese traditional media by non-Chinese, including Tibetan, Uighur, Central Asian, even an artist from Nepal. This reflects the inclusive Yuan view of the ethnicities of the empire.

The last chapter may be of greatest interest for the general reader. Blue and white ceramics have long been associated with China, and this book argues that this style of ceramic is the first world brand--often called Jingdezhen ware. The chapter is titled "The Yuan global brand."

This book by Shane McCausland covers a great deal of that
By Eduard Glastra-Marcello
As a collector of Chinese ceramic, the book is invaluable to me to know and learn the history of the Yuan Dynasty. This book by Shane McCausland covers a great deal of that. Particularly what I am interested in and would imagine to any collector of Chinese culture. Wether it be painting, ceramics, jade, clothing and general way of life this book is a must to read.

No Slam Dancing, No Stage Diving, No Spikes:: An Oral History of New Jersey's Legendary City Gardens, by Amy Yates Wuelfing, Steven DiLodo

How did a lifeless, concrete bunker in the inner city come to be a cornerstone of the underground music scene? How did a club stuck between nowhere foster an atmosphere of creativity and promote a vibrant music scene ready to explode? Simply: with dedication, drive and passion. The story of City Gardens is a multifaceted tale of community, history and, tradition. While one man, the inimitable Randy Now, is credited (and rightly so) with growing and cultivating the scene at the Gardens, it took a community of freaks, weirdoes, and misfits to truly make it a home. No Slam Dancing, No Stage Diving, No Spikes is the story of how that bunker became an oasis for wayward iconoclasts and cultural outcasts while witnessing some of the most compelling performances in music history. Told through the memories of bands, bouncers, stage management, bartenders, and fans—as well as the man who oversaw it all—No Slam Dancing is part history, part sociological study, and part legend. It is a document of times and events that occurred during the last great music age before technology changed everything. Over the course of hundreds of interviews, the authors pull together the narrative City Gardens during its nearly-20-year run. Whether they were the New Wave-crazed dancers who populated 90 Cent Dance Nights, or the punks and skins who caused mayhem during the hardcore shows, they were the ones who made every event a happening and every show something to behold. The individual memories merge to tell the story of a city, of a scene, and of the indomitable force of creativity.

Review
If you grew up in the big city, and involved yourself in underground music during the 80s and 90s, you might have taken a lot for granted. Bands want to gig in your town, and there are spots for them to play, so it s pretty easy to keep up on the new, hot stuff. However, if you grew up near the almost Philly/sort of Jersey armpit called Trenton, NJ, you may have relied on a fine gentleman named Randy Now Ellis who found himself an abandoned car dealership, and created a home-away-from-home for next-level punk, ska, hardcore, metal, hip hop, reggae and alternative music (when there still was such a thing) called City Gardens. Oh they had 90 cent dance nights, too. What authors Amy Yates Wuelfing and Steven DiLodovico bring forth in the thoroughly researched No Slam Dancing, No Stage Diving, No Spikes that makes this tome so very vibrant and interesting, is an understanding that a venue off the beaten path such as CG, lives almost exclusively off the passions of the community surrounding it. They accomplish this via the voices of nearly each and every person who made City Gardens tick, including many of the artists who took to its stage on numerous occasions over its years of operation, which includes onetime Trentonite Henry Rollins (Black Flag/Rollins Band), Ian MacKaye (Minor Threat/Fugazi), Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order) and even former City Gardens drink-slinger, and current Daily Show host, Jon Stewart, among so many others. --Words by Howie Abrams at Mass Appeal

Now here is a book that I had been looking forward to for a long time since I first heard about the project a few years ago. Titled after the infamous sign inside the long-shuttered Trenton, NJ club City Gardens (the last show there was in 1994), this is nothing less than a superb oral history (as the title suggests) of the club from its early 80s beginnings to its end in the late 90s (dance nights continued there for a few years after they stopped doing shows). For those who don t know, Randy Now Ellis started promoting shows in a dilapidated warehouse/former car dealership in a depressed part of Trenton, NJ, giving bands who could play nowhere else a chance and booking many national headliners who regularly stopped there between gigs in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, DC. Though perhaps City Gardens was known mostly for punk and hardcore, it should be said that Randy booked bands in all kinds of genres, including ska, reggae, new wave, alternative, hip-hop, industrial and others, often times mixing up bills in ways other promoters wouldn't. Many former City Gardens regulars (including the authors themselves) are interviewed, as are members of some of the many different bands that played there over the years. Generally speaking, the book is broken up into sections spanning a few years at a time. However, special chapters are devoted to The Ramones (who played there 21 times, more than any other band except Ween, New Hope, PA locals from across the river who played the last show there and were known for getting booed off the stage by fans of headliners like Fugazi) as well as the 90 cent dance nights that were held every Thursday night. For me, the allure of this book was two-fold. First off, I would finally be able to read about the days I missed there, as I didn't start going to shows there until 1991. Thus, though I d heard a few of the stories from the 80s, it s nice to have many of them in one place and packed with such intricate detail. Then, of course, there was the thrill of reading about shows I attended there in 1992 and 1993, including amazing shows by Fugazi, Shudder to Think, Jawbox, Green Day (their first show in New York or New Jersey ever and the last show they played on the Kerplunk! tour before they signed to a major label) and an incredible, impromptu 1993 Descendents reunion I witnessed. There is also an extensive segment in that chapter about the most violent show I have ever witnessed, a 1993 show by FEAR in which Neo-Nazi skinheads fought with others in the audience and incited a riot. Thankfully, most of my memories of the place are happy and by the time I started going there, it seemed like most of the worst of the violence (with the exception of that FEAR show) was over with. However, if I have one very minor complaint, it was that reading about the endless amount of violence and stupidity that occurred there in the late 80s got kind of exhausting and discouraging after a while. It does, however, give the reader a proper context for why shows there eventually were stopped, as insurance costs, injuries from patrons stage diving and the resulting threats of litigation made it harder and harder for Randy to continue. All in all, this book is a terrific read and I had trouble putting it down, barreling through its 400 or so pages quite quickly. If you are a former City Gardens patron or a fan of the 80s and early 90s underground music scene, this book is for you. Even if you never attended a show there, if you like books like Our Band Could Be Your Life or other recent oral histories like the one about The Replacements or another about the early 80s Detroit hardcore scene (which was compiled by Tony Rettman, a City Gardens regular who is quoted extensively here. --Words by Matthew Berlyant at The Big Takeover

About the Author
Amy Yates Wuelfing was a City Gardens regular. Her mom used to call there looking for her. Steven DiLodovico was an annoying hardcore kid. Steve is a loud-mouthed young buck from Philly who knows everything about everything. He s the kid you wanted to pummel at every show.

A MUST READ!!!
By Francis P Chismar
My reading consists of music books. I can't get enough of them. Especially oral histories about the punk and new wave era. I've read Punk Rock: an Oral History by John Robb about the start of the British Punk scene through Post Punk and Goth. I've read We've Got The Neutron Bomb about the LA Punk scene and also Please Kill Me about the start of the NY Punk Scene. I love these books. They are first hand accounts of scenes I loved even thought I was not a part of them.

I was not a part of those scenes.

That phrase is the key. A scene that I was a part of was City Gardens. City Gardens was the Mecca for misfit youths in the bad part of a bad city. The club was the homing beacon for any punk, new wave, indie, ska, and numerous other genre's that played the underground circuit traveling between Philadelphia and New York. It made Trenton a destination, regardless of how dangerous it was to travel there, because once you were inside its doors you were home. Punker, Skinhead, Goth, New Waver, it did not matter. You were accepted.

The club, whose shows were booked by promoter Randy Now, created a scene in an area that had not existed. In an era before smart phones and the internet you needed to have personal contact to make that musical discovery. Sometimes you got to finally see a band you had only heard about her saw a band that you had never heard of. In the meantime you make friends, became part of a brotherhood, or let it inspire you to create music yourself. Patrons and Employees included Jon Stewart of The Daily Show, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, Mickey Ween of Ween, and Ben Kenney of The Roots and Incubus.

The authors kept the DIY spirit alive by making this a book from successful Kickstarter campaign. They do a fantastic job of taking us through the history of City Gardens. The interviews are an amazing time capsule of musical knowledge. It points out the struggles of the bands who traveled relentlessly. There was no social media marketing. It was word of mouth, trial and error, fans and fanzines. They came to our house and they blew our minds. You can relive the the fights, the backstage shenanigans, the fires, the craziness, and most importantly, the shows themselves. Band like The Misfits, Green Day, Nirvana, Black Flag, The Ramones, R.E.M. The Replacements, and The Beastie Boys all graced the stage of this legendary venue.

At the time we all knew we were part of something special. This is a labor of love for Amy Yates Wuelfing & Steven DiLodovico who will financially probably never recoup the years of research and hard work that they put into the making of this chronicle. You can't put a dollar amount on memories. I don't think anyone that was a part of this scene had gotten into it for the money. It was for the love of it. And it shows in this book. It details not only the great bands that played this venue, but the great people that attended and the great local scene and the people that helped create it. The wonderful photography of Ken Salerno and the author's interviews help paint such an accurate picture of this era it's almost as if you are still there.

I am proud to say that the words of my friends are in this book. These were hard times. I miss these times. I miss City Gardens. It was a part of my youth that I loved. Fortunately, people like Randy Now still create a local buzz with stores like The Man Cave. I have made new friends there who love the sames things. We see shows together. We interact. We play songs for each other. It is everything that made me fall in love with music in the first place. May it never die.

May have a limited market
By E. RHOADS
This book is well written, and a treasure trove of anecdotes from the golden days of Punk and alternative rock as seen through artists and regulars from City Gardens, a now gone club in Trenton NJ which hosted the best of the best in it's day. For people like me who grew up seeing shows here it is a wonderful recollection, for some it may be lost.

Great book!
By Jen
Only half way through and loving it! City Gardens was one of the only good things about growing up in Trenton. This book definitely captures the feel of the place and how important it was to both the bands that played there and the people that went to see them. I don't think I have ever been to a club after that where there was such a diverse crowd and nobody cared about who/ what you were.
