Bas Jan Ader's art career lasted only five years. From 1970 to 1975 he played out his notions of the weight of gravity in short films that showed him hanging from trees (Broken Fall, Organic), biking into an Amsterdam canal (Fall 2, Amsterdam) or sitting in a chair atop a roof before propelling to the ground (Fall 1, Los Angeles). "Supremely self-confident," he met his wife while in graduate school "by lifting his shirt… and he possessed one of the five most beautiful belly buttons in the world." On July 9, 1975 Ader set out from Cape Cod in a 13-foot sailboat on a solo voyage to Europe. He was never seen again. Art historian Dumbadze paints a fascinating portrait of the young artist; his childhood during World War II in Amsterdam, his youthful days at Otis Art Institute, his quest for truth through philosophy, his love of Marcel Duchamp, and his participation in the Los Angeles art scene. Dumbadze sometimes speculates too broadly on the meaning behind Ader's work, but through letters, artwork and interviews by Ader's contemporaries he illuminates the brief life of an man con-tent to let gravity take him where it would. Best Ader Book Available

I found this book to be extremely well written and expertly researched. It combines biography and analysis of Ader's work in a manner that is both accessible and enlightening. I learned a great deal about the artist's life, and gained a much deeper understanding of the complexities of his work as an artist. It's the the best book on Ader available and one of my favorite books I have read this year.

This is book is cerebral at the expense of accuracy.

I knew Bas very well. Dumbadze's book makes the mistake of over-intellectualizing his work instead of looking at it in the context of his life -- especially his abandonment and other fears, and his many efforts to escape those fears: women, pot, gambling/speculative investments.
Above all, though, the author subscribes to a currently fashionable school of art criticism that posits that the piece itself and the critic are the two most important elements, and that, having completed the work, the artist is no longer important. If you subscribe to that absurdly fatuous point of view, you'll love this book.

Little was not only a farmer but a land developer, and he filed his plat at the Arapahoe County Courthouse in 1872 for streets and homes on his property. When the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad built south from Denver through Littleton in 1871, development soon followed, and Little had no shortage of buyers for his plots of land. Thus began Littleton, and over the years of boom and bust, this early settlement has transitioned from village to county seat to one of Denvers finest suburbs.

Introducing Art

This book is used as a text book for a course for a course I am taking at George Mason University, Introduction to the Visual Arts. As a text book, it does a good job of helping me review what the professor has presented in class. It has wonderful photographs of important works of art, and it has good descriptions of how each piece of art was created. As I write this review, we are only half way through the course and the book, but I have found one error. This concerns printmaking and the way drypoint is created, hardly a major catastrophe, but it does make me wonder if there are other minor errors about technical process.

I am enjoying the book, which is well written and well illustrated. If you want to learn how to look at art, how to tell if a piece is good or not, how to appreciate the process of creating art, this book does a very good job.

Like many text books today, the price of this book is outrageous. Because it has just been published, I was unable to buy it used, but I advise anyone who can to do that.

Understanding Arts Textbook

I was required to have this book for an understanding visual arts course. Understanding that because this book deals with art explains why this book is so expensive, yet comprehensive. It's comprehensive because as well as defining art vocabulary it gives more of a background to art history and the different forms of art in various cultures worldwide. This textbook definitely hurt my bank account, but after this class is over I'm sending it right back to Amazon for store credit. They make is easy to understand art through examples and such. I am glad that I was assigned to such a comprehensive textbook but now I have to memorize all the artists and titles of art for my exam. This book is great for college students, both students who are interested in art and those who are required to take a course to understand the arts.

Excellent Book

Was forced to purchase this book for a college course that I was required to take in order to complete a second degree program in which I was enrolled. But I and my 9 year old daughter enjoyed the book so much that I decided not to keep the book after the class was done. This book is a cultural, historical and artistic experience all wrapped up on one.

Definitely recommended book!

All the tips in this book are very useful to living in a tiny home. This book gives me a lot of reasons to live in a small house rather than big house. Definitely the small house having the lesser number of rooms, which can be easily clean and managed and also the use of electricity is limited which also reduces your monthly expenses. The writer's tips to use every inch of your house is wonderful. The writer gives the best tips to live in a tiny home in a perfect way. The cover of the book is very attractive and information inside the book is very useful. In short, Tiny House Living is a great book.

Title is very misleading!

I didn't see anywhere in this book where she went into the difference between a 75 sq ft house and a 400 or 600 ft house. I was expecting, from the title, to be shown how to live in 75 sq ft, which I thought would be quite a trick! I was expecting at least a couple floorplans showing 75 sq ft. Nada! the house on the cover is CERTAINLY WELL over 75! WAIT! I just looked again! She says LESS than 75 sq ft! I do not feel that she delivered what she promised in this book!
