About the Author
D. J. Sullivan has been directing and teaching actors for over 50 years. Her students have included Tony Award winners Brian Stokes-Mitchell ("Kiss Me Kate") and Christian Hoff ("Jersey Boys") as well as Academy Award Nomiee Annette Bening ("American Beauty"). As an actress, D.J. Sullivan has appeared on such television shows as "Murder She Wrote", General Hospital", "Pensicola Wings of Gold", "Dallas", and "Beretta". Her film roles include all four "Killer Tomato" movies, and she has worked with such stars Jason Robards, Angela Landsbury, Joan Plowright, Patty Duke and Anthony Perkins. A 30-year S.A.G. Five Stars for D. J. Sullivan

Subtext Made Simple is the best book on Acting and Subtext I've ever read. It's short, but contains a plethora of information and tips. I use D. J.'s book in my business, Renee's Acting Workshop. It was a huge success. My students from beginners to pros all grew as actors. They loved the book. D.J. defines subtext in many ways throughout the book. She tells actors that there is so much going on behind the lines of a script that the actor must bring into their performance. It contains D. J.'s discovery of subtext and her brief encounters with a few movie stars, where she asks them about their acting process. But the real meat is later in the book when she shows us how to find subtext by giving excellent examples and processes. She also takes us through the application of seven layers of subtext the actor can add to his/her performance. There are open scenes and suggestions and examples for teachers to use with their students. I highly recommend this book.

This book is a wonderful testament to the dedication and hard work of its author D.J. Sullivan. Young actors will benefit from her years of experience and develop an incredible tool to approach and understand the nature of acting based on this work. I only wish I had been afforded an opportunity fifty years ago to read such a book. Constantine Stanislavki was my mentor and his works were my bible. Ms. Sullivan has distilled these works and created a very concise and excellent instruction manual that all young actors should recognize as the guide posts they need to develop an understanding of the tools they are given.

About the Author
Melville Brock Fenton is professor in and chair of the Department of Biology at the University of Western Ontario. Simmons is curator-in-charge of the Department of Mammalogy at the American Museum of Natural History, where she is also professor in the Richard Gilder Graduate School.

Fascinating, brilliant...and very cool. Love it!!!!! :)

I got this book today and haven't read all of it yet (cannot wait to finish), but had to post and share my joy with other bat fans, as I assume anyone who reads this will have an interest in bats, which nobody I know does (and some consider a little - or more than a little - creepy.)

It arrived shrink-wrapped. :) It's a sturdy, hardcover book, appears to be well bound and has good, thick, smooth pages. So many pictures! Woot! Picture quality is supreme - really! Nat Geo-style perfect! - on the vast majority of the gorgeous pics and slightly (just a wee bit) fuzzy on a very few that are blown up, obviously taken in the wild. The background color of the pages is black, which (as well as cracking me up) provides a nice background for some of the pictures. You can see an example on the book cover.

Very informative! It isn't just the basic info that anyone who has a passing interest in bats has heard, but has everything...all kinds of stuff - Bat History, Bat Anatomy (including development), Bat Diet, Bat Behavior and Socializing, a smidge on Bat Illness, etc. Although there is TONS of detailed Bat Info, it is interesting to read (not dry at all, at times amusing) and has fun, simple chapter titles, like "Chapter Six: Where Bats Hang Out," which I love. Even some of the pics are fun.

If you are a Bat Fan (get yourself a cape, crusader ;)), then get this book.

Receiving this book has made me happy and grateful to live in the Internet age and could clicky-click on amazon and get something this awesome delivered to my door. Yay.

(I realize that my enthusiastic review might make one wonder if I work for the authors or publisher, but I swear that I don't. I am just fascinated by bats and really love this book.)

The Real Science of Bats

Noticing it on a coffee table, you'll be drawn in by this book's high-quality, weighty and attractive printing, opening to nearly 300 pages of crisp, diverse bat photographs against glossy black. But once you're inside what will captivate you is the text - the true beauty of bats is in the science. Once you learn that bats use sensitive hairs on the surface of their wings to detect and react to air vortices, those mysterious photographs of a wingbeat cycle take are filled with meaning. Several pages of bust phtographs in the first chapter, at first seemingly presented as a simple diversity showcase, will be referenced later throughout the text as the authors point out details of the evolved facial features and what they tell us about the lives of these bats. Some photos that have previously gained notice online, such as a series of embryonic bat development, are printed in this book in higher detail than you can find anywhere else, and with greater explanation and context.

Other reviewers have mentioned the depth this book provides. I consider myself a serious bat enthusiast - yet almost any bat fact I might rattle off is in this book already. The science is cutting edge: for example, it charts the spread of White Nose Syndrome up to the most recent hibernation season, and it presents the recent overturning of the classical megabat/microbat distinction by the newer genetically based yin/yang classification system. Although presentations of bat science must always be sensitive to public misconceptions and biases, in this book good science comes before above all else. The notion that bats should be thought of as desirable because they control mosquito populations is dismissed as questionable science at best, and the sections on bats and diseases include frank discussions about rabies, histoplasmosis, Ebola and SARS.

This book could not have come from a better pair of authors - Fenton has made venerable contributions and is a wellspring of stories throughout his career, and has extensive experience writing for the nontechnical audience through several previous books. Simmons is a powerhouse on the vanguard of current bat science; her research group at the American Museum of Natural History brings extraordinary resources to the study of evolutionary bat biology. The book is interspersed with personal anecdotes from both of these researchers, including how to set up sneaky bat traps, and what happens when they get bitten. The personal stories can be quite colorful, e.g. Fenton on examining a termite hill turned bat roost: "It is an amazing experience to stick your hand inside one of these bat roosts and feel all the little warm, squirming bodies of the bats roosting within!"

The only complaint I have about the book is the prevalence of typos and erroneous editing. Many words are misspelled, in-text references to the labeled figures can end up pointing you to the wrong place, and an inset on page 278 simply cuts off in the middle of the text. However, for a first edition it's forgivable, the book is well worth the purchase even with these errors, especially since they never compromise the science.

A good book severely impacted by an inept editor.

I would give the authors 4 stars for their content and the editor 1 star for deciding to print the book on black pages. For me, white font on black pages got old very quickly and the image captions in dark red bordered on unreadable. The image quality varied from very good to something that looked like an out of focus snapshot take on a cell phone. Placing images that have a black background on a black page scream out for some sort of frame. While I might not to expect a scientist to be a master of layout, I would expect a competent editor to be better.

Outstanding unification of theory and practice

Wonderfully thought-provoking book. Does an outstanding job of explaining esoteric concepts: both what they mean and why they're relevant to contemporary life and design. Does a great job of challenging designers to think about their work and their customers in new, larger, more deeply empathic ways. Succeeds at explaining the need to shift our attention from minds and things to relationships and experiences in and of the world.

Promising ideas, but writing leaves a lot to be desired

Having read some of Wendt's shorter essays, I eagerly awaited the release of Design for Dasein, and when it came out I picked it up exciting to gain new knowledge. Unfortunately, I couldn't help but be frustrated by this book.

Design for Dasein has a lot of things going for it. It serves as a great introduction to the philosophy of Heidegger and successfully makes his ideas relevant to the 20th century. It summarizes important developments in human-computer interaction and design theory from the last 40 years. It breaks down many industry tropes and attempts to show how effective design thinking, incorporating philosophical learnings along the way, can lead to a more effective design practice.

However, despite having the glimmer of some good ideas, those ideas are mostly left poorly articulated. Wendt is unable to concisely explain concepts, instead drawing out their explanations over the course of the book, leading to repetition and jumbled ideas. The book is without strong logical flow; instead of each section building effectively on the last, chapters merely rephrase ideas previously mentioned without adding significant new learnings. Ultimately, I was left not with the feeling of greater understanding, but with a vague sense of having gleaned something. Perhaps my biggest criticism of Wendt is his tendency to lose track of the point and and go on a diatribe about what he thinks is wrong with the industry. Wendt loses legitimacy in these moments, sounding more like a jaded critic than a learned academic.

At $23, Wendt's book is worth a read. Just have patience - he takes 184 pages to say what should take 60.

Seeing the world with fresh eyes.

This thoroughly illustrated, narrative history of Roman art provides an extensive survey of the subject, spanning approximately 1,000 years, from the founding of Rome to the rule of Constantine. Broadly defining Roman art and considering the many cultures that contributed to the Roman system, A History of Roman Art examines a wide range of painting, mosaic, sculpture, and decorative arts, as well as architecture and its associated sculptures.

The overarching themes of Rome’s cultural inclusiveness and art’s important role in promoting Roman values runs through the book. Each chapter consists of a chronologically organized account of the arts with key examples illustrating the cultural and historical context within which art was created and developed along with sections offering further discussion on the intersection of art and literature, art from the provinces, and important scholarly perspectives. Guided by a helpful structure that includes key lessons and explanatory material on artistic techniques, stories, and writing by ancient authors, readers are sure to gain a deep appreciation of art’s contribution to the Roman world.

About the Author

Steven L. Tuck is Professor and Chair of Classics at Miami University. In 2012, he received the E. Phillips Knox award, Miami University's highest honor for innovative and effective undergraduate teaching. He is the author of Latin Inscriptions in the Kelsey Museum: The Dennison and De Criscio Collections (2006).

THERE IS ALWAYS ROOM FOR ONE MORE QUALITY BOOK ON THIS SUBJECT

In the Preface to his book Prof.Tuck poses the question: "[W]hy we might need a new book on Roman art." I shall gladly answer the question for him. Currently, there are two superb books on Roman art either one of which would be an exellent choice for classroom use. They are: 1) ROMAN ART by Ramage & Ramage (sixth edition); 2) A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART by Kleiner (Enhanced Edition). Both of those books are exceedingly well illustrated with the vast majority in brilliant color. Each has a Glossary and extensive Bibliography. The Kleiner book has a somewhat larger Bibliography while the Ramage & Ramage includes Ancient authors. Both are eminently readable and quite comprehensive given the fact that they are designed to be used primarily as textbooks. All that being said, some of the advantages of the Tuck book from the standpoint of this reviewer is his emphasis upon VISUAL analysis and its coordination with factual material, the way he uses his Timelines especially in conjunction with each chapter, his incorporation of marginal glosses in the text (the latter two are associated with a website specifically designed for this book), additional images of works of art relevant to this book along with "sample lessons, assignments, and related educational resources" (both items for Instructors also to be found on the website), and last but not least Tuck's A HISTORY OF ROMAN ART (paper back) costs less than 60% of the K and R&R pb versions. Publishers are going to have to find a way to produce textbooks that do not cost over $100 and beyond. It's bad enough that EJ Brill and many University Presses charge upwards of $300+ for hardcover books while never issuing their pb counterparts thereby eliminating the possibility of purchase by both students and teachers alike!

Another positive feature of Tuck's book is the way he takes a middle ground when it comes to the controversial dating of certain objects. For example, the Capitoline She-wolf is now thought to be 13th century AD (R&R) or 5th century BC (K) while T presents both possibilities. Academic scholars are finally beginning to wake up when it comes to the Chronological problems and dating of Ancient History and Ancient Art History. Art History is still a very youthful field. The discovery of King Tut's tomb and the beginnings of the Indus Valley civilization go back only to 1922, less than 100 years ago. The task of rewriting innumberable books may be a Herculean one but must be done. The dates for the beginning of Dynastic Egypt have already been shifted down by more than 2000 years. The time of Hammurabi has been shifted down by nearly a millennium. The Greek Dark Age may be a mirage. And so forth. Starting on p.2, Tuck discusses the problems of forgery, provenance, and "dating dilemmas in Roman Art History" and is to be commended for doing so. The third century AD is still a mess for those historians and art historians who have to deal with this period. Terms such as "Late Antique" have become as meaningless as "the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire". The opening chapter of Tuck's book also deals with the subjects of: "Restoration Issues"; "The Role of Elites in Public Art and Architecture"; the relationship of Roman art and architecture to that of the Greeks, and much more. Overall, Prof. Tuck applies an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Roman art and architecture throughout his book and is to be commended for it. Had this book been available two to three months earlier, as a Prof.of Ancient, Classical, and Oriental Art, I would have used it as a textbook in my own course on Roman Art & Architecture. It has my highest recommendation.

Not really a book on ART, but on the Influence of Roman Style.

As a lifelong artist and photographer I can't believe anyone would put such poor pictures in a book supposedly about ART. The photos are generally poorly lit, lots of annoying shadows, backlit, fuzzy - but worst of all no sense of composition or grandeur. A great many of the photos are so small the details are very hard to see clearly. The book also plays more like a history of architecture than art. After looking at this book one would hardly want to go to Rome, it mostly looks dull and ruined to the point of destruction. I have travel books, made for tourists, that are far better illustrated than this. He makes Rome look like DogPatch. By the way, the paper in this book is very thin and transparent. One can see the print from the reverse of every page, and a lot of the colors bleed through the pages too.
I realized, after thinking about my review for a day, what the real problem is with this book. It is more about style than the beauty and grandeur of art. This is a book about the ubiquitous influence of Roman art, architecture and engineering on subsequent Western Civilization. I think the author is more interested in how Roman STYLE has been adopted by subsequent civilizations that about the art itself. I bought it thinking it focused on the art for its own sake and it isn't. I think the book has a very misleading title. I think this explains why the photos are so uninspiring.

A great guide for movie night

Missing a Lot

The list itself skews to the conventional. Older (really old) movies may be classics, but they take away space from more dynamic current possibilities. I would prefer a more unconventional approach within a more concentrated time frame. Too many categories ---- could be consolidated. Also valuable to give running time and subtitle info. This is AARP. A Vast percent of the audience is hearing impaired, and without titles or captioning movies are frustrating more than entertaining. This should enter into suitable choices. Grownups over 60 need title assistance far more often than they get it. I was hoping for that assistance here. Another time around?

In fact after a couple of days, I took her advice about wearing my eye color to make a good impression on others and I certainly noticed a difference in how people responded to me. Many years ago (more than I care to disclose) I had the opportunity of having my colors done by Danielle. Now that I am older and living in a different environment, sunny-hot-humid, I'm thinking that it may be time to call on her services again.

Great guide to the Chicago style!

Great guide to the Chicago style blues from one of the best. Having played with the late great Muddy Waters, Bob learned from a legend. The accompanying video lessons are great and video quality is first-class both in content and production quality. Makes it very easy to follow ad pickup the riffs shown. I would have rated this 5 stars except the production quality of the print book is lacking. The first time I opened the book, the whole cover (not just the front) fell away. Very annoying for a new book and also very poor quality control from the production dept. After applying a fair amount of super glue, we're back in business. That being said, I highly recommend this book if you want to further your chops in this style of the blues.

Long overdue!

There's lots of books on how to play hot licks, but not that many on how to play the part that most guitar players fall down on--the rhythm. Jimi was quoted once something like " There's a world of lead guitar players out there, but the most important thing is the rhythm". A bunch of good solid material here that we used to have to figure out from records & watching the old guys play. Hopefully this book will elevate the playing level at lots of blues jams at least!

As a huge Blues fan and guitarist, this title jumped out at me. I saw Bob Margolin and band perform years ago and was aware that he played with Muddy Waters for awhile. He is the real deal. This book is full of great info and for me, has plenty of great lesson examples that are well explained in print along with the included DVD.
