Tadaaki Kuwayama and his wife, the artist Raku-ko Naito, arrived in New York in 1958. Leaving behind the traditions of Japanese nihonga painting, they became part of the cutting edge of the 1960s American art scene. A contemporary of Minimalists such as Dan Flavin, Walter De Maria, and Donald Judd, Kuwayama soon developed his own distinctive style, typified by vivid fields of paint juxtaposed in horizontal and vertical compositions, as well as monochromatic canvases bisected by thin strips of chrome. Following two solo exhibitions at the renowned Green Gallery in 1961 and 1962, his work was shown until to-day in many important galleries and museums throughout the world, not only in the USA, but also in Germany, Switzerland, Isreal, and – not to forget – in his home country, Japan.

ELEGANT MONOGRAPH of a GREAT ARTIST!
By Producerchuck
Finally a great monograph of one of the purest artists of the last 50 years! Yes, reproducing Kuwayama's art in a book is a physical challenge and seeing the work in person is always superior, but that can be said about all art. This book is an invaluable historical record of an artist that has always been way ahead of the curve. Seeing Kuwayama's work from the early '60's reproduced in the same volume as his most recent work makes you realize that the his art is timeless and essential. And, the essay by Michio Hayashi is equally illuminating - "The viewers subjectivity becomes dissolved into the sea of nameless being.." If you want to discover or re-discover an amazing artist and "dissolve into the sea of nameless being" than get this book:)

A Disappointment
By C. G. Vickery
A monograph of Tadaaki Kuwayama is long overdue so I was excited by the prospect of this book. Unfortunately it is severely let down by the photography and reproduction of his art works. Too many of the photos are grainy and washed out (so that it is difficult to fully appreciate his subtle use of colour) and in some cases reflections (from camera flash or exhibition space lighting I'm guessing) are obvious. A wide angle lens has often been used to photograph works that take up large gallery spaces and this causes two problems - a) it distorts the works and b) it shows large swathes of gallery floors and ceilings - including ugly light grids and air conditioning units. This last problem, especially, undermines the Zen/minimalist intent of the artist's work. There are better quality photos of this artist's work on Google Images. Such a shame. I can't understand why this wasn't picked up - and addressed - during the editing process.
