A Feast

This book, edited by Paul Shaw and beautifully designed by Linda Florio, is a feast visually and historically. Despite one's resolve to start at the beginning and move through the serving line sequentially, it is impossible not to explore what's being offered on other pages. With contributions by Matthew Carter, Lance Hidy, Frank Blokland, Ewan Clayton and others, there is so much to be tempted by. One comes across a stunning full page black-and-white photograph of Father Edward M. Catich standing near the top two rungs of a wooden ladder, leaning out, reaching over, making rubbings of the Trajan Inscription; a frozen moment in time. It's almost as though Father Catich is anointing the Holy Grail. And that's just one page! The Eternal Letter has 260 pages in all, and on another you'll find a meaty serving of types and calligraphy by Hermann Zapf and on yet another a lavish presentation of the calligraphic virtuosity of John Stevens.

The Eternal Letter provides an historic context for a letterform that, for over 2000 years, has not only endured, but ultimately prevailed in a day and age when fonts are spewed out daily like cat litters. The book is rich with pictorial examples and insightful commentary about the eternal Roman majuscule and its offshoots, which range in application from stone to ink to pixels. Shaw's editing and scholarship is impeccable and surely cements his credentials as one of the world's leading authorities on the subject. This book is a must for the library of anyone interested in the expressive qualities of great calligraphy and typography.

Infinitely illuminating

It sounds like the literary equivalent of a soporific: a book of essays on the two millennia history of the classical Roman letterform. But this gorgeously designed tome could not be more intellectually stimulating or visually delightful. For a non-designer like myself, it has been an engrossing read, mixing history with typographic lore and marvelous personalities, like the maverick Father Catich, whose discovery was worth the book price alone.

Seeing Is Believing

One of the finer moments in intellectual life is the pleasant surprise that comes with the discovery of a completely established discipline, which up until that moment has run under the radar. I am referring to the practice, the study, the art of the construction of the simple letter, and in the present case, the Roman capital letter, so thoroughly explored in The Eternal Letter, MIT, 2015. In the 10th edition of Webster’s we come to precisely the book’s subject in the second section of the fifth definition for the word “letter”: “a style of type”, emphasis on “style”, because the story told here begins one and a half millennia before type. In general the book is a rich compendium of essays by experts (ed. Paul Shaw) on the development and history of the Roman capital letter, starting with the chiseled letters on Trajan’s famous column (still considered by many the tabula rasa for capitals) and running through the ages up to at least twenty feature films’ poster copy for 2014.

A large part of the volume’s effective presentation is how it employs graphics. There are hundreds of them, and each one is cited within a particular text of an accompanying essay. Referring to the book’s masthead for the credits, we see that the book has a graphic designer, Linda Florio. The careful way the pages are laid out gives the feel of experiencing a well-displayed exhaustive exhibit in a museum without being exhausting.

Before The Eternal Letter came to my attention, I had already some knowledge of this niche world of “lettering”. My wife is an artist and she has worked on a couple of projects in the “book arts” arena. I have been to openings at the Grolier Club with her, a most rarefied atmosphere. And while their focus is on the book as object, lettering, illustration, layout all come into it. I am a writer of prose fiction, so of course all of this is part of my daily life, even though until now I haven’t really paid much attention. I have noticed in the last decade or so on the final page of certain published works a paragraph devoted to the typeface used. At the launching of The Eternal Letter, the passion and excitement from the presenters was engaging. At the end of his comments, Paul Shaw insisted how this history of the Roman capital was just a beginning. I hope so. Mr. Shaw then waxed eloquent on one of his favorite fonts, Optima. Curiosity peaked, recently I wrote a letter to a friend in Louisiana and scrolled to it in my Word doc. With a little hesitancy, slightly apprehensive I might be accused of treachery, I changed to the font from Times New Roman. When finished I looked at the page and felt I could see what Mr. Shaw was talking about. There’s an elegant balanced spareness to it, a kind of gracefulness… I guess I’m infected.

The good news is that in this era when even the simplest teaching of cursive handwriting is disappearing from the classroom, we have folks over the moon for the way letters were designed in the time of the Caesars. Hope springs Eternal.

Excellent first step toward Jazz

Timing is everything--this one was just what I needed now. Clear, simple explanations on how and why certain chord substitutions work. I have been learning jazz chord progressions and the hows and whys of what I could substitute. This offers very clear explanations as he takes a simple accompaniment, jazzes it up, then shows a chord melody arrangement for each song. I enjoy playing old jazz standards, but the song selection is just ok to me. I would enjoy a part 2 with more challenging arrangements in low g tuning.

Dworkin considers works predicated on blank sheets of paper, from a fictional collection of poems in Jean Cocteau's Orphée to the actual publication of a ream of typing paper as a book of poetry; he compares Robert Rauschenberg's Erased De Kooning Drawing to the artist Nick Thurston's erased copy of Maurice Blanchot's The Space of Literature (in which only Thurston's marginalia were visible); and he scrutinizes the sexual politics of photographic representation and the implications of obscured or obliterated subjects of photographs. Reexamining the famous case of John Cage's 4'33", Dworkin links Cage's composition to Rauschenberg's White Paintings, Ken Friedman's Zen for Record (and Nam June Paik's Zen for Film), and other works, offering also a "guide to further listening" that surveys more than 100 scores and recordings of "silent" music. Dworkin argues that we should understand media not as blank, base things but as social events, and that there is no medium, understood in isolation, but only and always a plurality of media: interpretive activities taking place in socially inscribed space.

Simply the single-most important book of cultural criticism to appear in the last decades, No Medium is a must for artists of all persuasions. Professor Dworkin is at home in discussing all the arts and has mastered European avant garde theory and resolved it into a language of his own. Every critic and artist should own a copy.

Absolutely recommend!

This book is the perfect book for anyone interested in how music has changed, and how our relationship to it has as well. It's thorough but accessible, a well-written history that reads like a whirlwind. I especially loved the first parts, the earliest histories, and the playlists that accompanied each chapter were fantastic. I recommend this for music experts and for people just interested in the topic; everyone will find something fascinating in Howard Goodall's The Story of Music. Another great one from Pegasus Books.

A Must-Have Book for Carpenters Fans!

To a diehard Carpenters' fan there is no such thing as too much information. After all, there just might be some new tidbit about a song or lyric you weren't aware of before, or you might learn about some unusual event or history associated with a particular song. The fascination with the Carpenters is never over.

Enter Rick Henry with his latest book, "Expanded Edition: The Carpenters Online Interviews." Like his first edition, the second edition also features individuals that provided lyrics and/or songs to the Carpenters. One of the new interviews is with Terry Draper, who was a member of the group, Klaatu, and co-authored "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft." Did you know that it was Tony Peluso, guitarist for the Carpenters, who suggested this song to Karen and Richard? In the Danny Ironstone interview you learn about the history and inspiration behind the song "Prime Time Love." How did Karen make this song more her own? I liked the pure honesty in what both musicians had to say about their songs and how they felt knowing their songs were going to be repurposed in the Carpenters' signature style.

One of my favorite interviews was what actually turned into a four-part essay by Palma Pascale, the author of "Love Me for What I Am." Palma gives us a marvelous, detailed scenario of how hard it really is to be a lyricist in this industry and that nothing is ever a sure-thing. This interview was in the first edition of Rick's book, but I enjoyed it even more reading it again. What is new is the tribute written by Tim San Paolo, a close friend and associate to Palma. She was such a down-to-earth person.

I also enjoyed getting to learn more about Lucy Drive, the actress, who portrayed Karen Carpenter in the documentary film, "The Last Hours of Karen Carpenter," which aired in August 2014.

Then we get to a marvelous section of the book, the section dedicated to Karen's solo album: "Karen Carpenter: Behind the Scenes of the New York Solo Sessions." It is now over 30 years since Karen Carpenter passed away (February 4, 1983), yet we are still itching to know more about this fascinating songstress. There are six interviews with musicians /technicians involved with Karen's project. I was completely immersed in what each individual had to say. You cannot read interviews like this anywhere else! This edition expanded the interviews with well-known drummer, Liberty DeVitto, and multi-talented Russell Javors. Two of Russell's songs ended up on Karen's solo album. These are the country-tinged "All Because of You" and the new-wave rocker "Still in Love with You." Russell also composed the arrangement for the latter. Additionally, he wrote "Truly You," which is one of the nine, unreleased Karen solo songs.

The third section of the book, entitled, "From the Perspective of the Fans," shares insights from several fans. It's always interesting to learn more about fellow Carpenters fans and how they were impacted by Karen's talent. Each story is unique. Finally, the book ends with an interview with Rick Henry. We get to learn more about him, how the concept for the original "The Carpenters Online Interviews" book came about, and what motivated Rick to do this second edition.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will read it more than once. It also is attractively designed and makes a beautiful coffee-table book to share with visitors. Besides Carpenters fans, if you know someone who wants to learn more about the history behind some of the Carpenters songs and Karen's solo experience via interviews, this is definitely the right book to read!

Engaging and Informative Memoir

This book is a memoir of Jeff Strong’s work as both a drummer and the developer of a unique music-medicine technique called Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention. The first section of the book details his life as a young man: he explores the different aspects of drumming, hones his skills as a drummer at the Musician’s Institute, and studies with a special person who would play a key part in his experimentation with drumming as a healing modality. He weaves in stories of his initial attempts to use drumming to reach and help kids with developmental disabilities in particular.
The second half gives detailed information on how he uses his Rhythmic Entrainment Intervention technique to address such issues as anxiety, self-stimulatory behaviors, sleep disorders, and many more conditions. The time and effort Strong has put into carefully documenting his work (which has included working with school districts, group homes, and individuals) is impressive. ”Different Drummer” is a brave and open memoir of someone who has followed his passion and intuition and combined those with careful research to create something truly groundbreaking.

As a Licenced Therapist, I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in, or dealing with Spectrum issues...ADD, Autism, and Anxiety.
Jeff Strong , a percussionist and researcher, invites the reader to learn, explore, and open their minds to a unique and highly effective therapeutic approach to working with brain functioning and behavior. I found this book to be an interesting balance of the writer's personal journey and client case studies. It is a humanistic read....not dry at all.
This book should be on the shelves of anyone working with, or living with, people dealing with sleep, anxiety, aggression, attention, self-regulation, processing, and/or connection issues.
This work is changing lives.

Excellent Book

My 26 year old son with autism is going through Mr. Strong's program right now, and it's made quite a difference in his behavior. This book convinced me to try the therapy. A few months earlier, when he was having serious problems with agitation, we happened to be at a Japanese festival. I thought the drumming would bother him a lot, but it calmed him down. Different Drummer was mentioned in an article in the Safe Minds e-newsletter the next day, so I had to check it out. When it comes to music, I am basically illiterate, but my husband was a drummer in high school. He was absolutely blown away by the rhythms Mr. Strong uses in therapy. The book has great anecdotes that nonmusicians can understand. Since I'm in the autism business, I'm familiar with many of the situations described. I am also very appreciative that autistic adults were treated as well as children. The background information, both personal and clinical, is excellent. The therapy is applicable to a number of conditions, such as anxiety, ADHD, issues with sleep, aggression, and communication problems. This is a great book for anyone looking for a non-drug therapy. And my son really likes the drumming.

About the Author
LUIS E. CARRANZA is Professor of Architecture at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island. He is the author of Architecture as Revolution: Episodes in the History of Modern Mexico, and he has published and lectured nationally and internationally on Latin American modern architecture, focusing primarily on Mexico.

FERNANDO LUIZ LARA is Associate Professor of Architecture at the University of Texas at Austin, where he serves as Chair of the Brazil Center at the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies. He is the author of The Rise of Popular Modernist Architecture in Brazil.
