Shaw argues that as we work to protect this historically wooded and agricultural land from further development, we need to replace our outmoded infrastructure and rethink outdated design and management practices that currently limit our progress toward a clean and beautiful environment.
With over 350 photographs and 20 paintings, Shaw captures scenes of the river, the wildlife on the shores, and the human activities along its banks. About the Author
JUDY AUER SHAW is a researcher at the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, Rutgers University, where she also leads the Sustainable Raritan River Initiative. This initiative earned the Somerset County Regional Planning Award in 2010. In addition, Shaw has received the Elwood Jarmer Award for Environmental Leadership.

Purchased originally because the author was a Master Gardener whom I had admired. The book came more quickly than anticipated so it is "my" Christmas present. The pictures do an excellent job of showing some of New Jersey's natural beauty. The book is educational and motivational without being heavy handed. Could be a beautiful coffee table addition.

nice book of the area

I purchased this book because one of my images was supposed to be in it -- but the editor cropped the 'h---' out of it, so there wasn't much left. :-) The images that were selected -- not to sound like sour grapes - but I think at least some had to be 'friends' who wanted to be published; many were amateur level, at best. This would not have been so bad, since I've lived in the area most of my life so it still is a nice keepsake of my 'hometown' -- but the low review is because within a short time the binding started to curl! I've put heavy books on it for months and it has flattened out somewhat, but the quality just isn't there (bought another book around the same time -- it never curled, so no humidity issue, etc -- plus, I have hundreds of books in the house - never experienced this with any others) . But for what it is -- a picture-book of the Raritan River, it's nice.
