Utterly charming presentation of Illuminated letters

We're all fascinated by the Book of Kells, probably the most famous early medieval manuscript employing fanciful and highly decorated initial letters. This postcard book is so fun to browse through.
First, its presentation is cool: you fold the stiff covers into a little box which keeps the postcards in good shape. It's like opening a treasure box as you lift the front cover, flip over the back cover and see "A"--the first card. They're in alphabetical order, of course. But don't worry that they'll fall out: while you could pull out any individual card you wanted, they're bound together and not free.
Second, on the back of each card is the source. For example, for the front cover we are told: "S is from an early printed copy of Pliny the Elder's Natural History (Historia Naturalis), 1476.
Third, like a calendar, you see all the letters pictured on the back cover.
Fourth, finally, I'm astounded at the amount of information packed into just two small (postcard size) pages within the front and back covers. Michelle P. Brown really knows her stuff as a renowned history professor at the University of London. (You people familiar with Latin will LOVE that she is titled "Professor Emerita" rather than "emeritus." I have never, ever seen the proper gender used before.) I've never heard before that the monks writing the text by hand left a large space and, once the whole page was done, would hand it to the specialized artist who hand-painted the "incipits," the first words, "in a riot of ornament and display lettering."

A Class Act - These are Lovely Postcards

As you can guess, the word "illumination" comes from the Latin for "to light up". Michelle Brown points this out in the introduction (on the inside covers). It is interesting that this word was chosen to describe the colorful and fanciful letters and illustrations (there's that "shedding light upon" again) in medieval manuscripts.
This postcard set is published by the Bodleian Libraries of Oxford University, England. All images in this set are from books and manuscripts in its collection: A set of 26 cards, one for each letter of the alphabet A - Z.
The letters include animals, humans and fanciful plants. A couple favorite examples: The "D" is from the Gifford Bible, created in the 12th century. That is definitely not a monk preparing to write on his scroll. The "L" is from the Auct Bible, and never was such a lion seen in real life.
A couple of the images used are more recent. The great William Morris, whose textile design firm was founded in 1861 and is still going strong, was also a lover of illuminated manuscripts. He translated works, such as "The Odyssey" and published his versions accompanied by illuminated letters.
This postcard set is a class act. The imagery is very colorful and strongly shown, though there is no way for a photograph to do full justice to the glint of gold leaf. Postcards are 6 7/16" x 4 11/16". The cardstock is average thickness, so postcard postage will work.
The set arrives in foldover covers hold everything nicely. The cards are lightly gummed in, and it is easy remove a postcard out of order. There is no gum residue and a gentle release is also easy. As I said, a class act.
A very recommended postcard set.
