About the Author
Stephen Davies teaches philosophy at The University of Auckland. He writes mainly about aesthetics and the philosophy of art, and has written extensively on the definition of art, the ontological character of artworks, cross-cultural aesthetics, the expression of emotion in art, and the interpretation and evaluation of art. His books include Musical Works and Performances (Clarendon, 2001), Themes in the Philosophy of Music (OUP, 2003), The Philosophy of Art (Blackwell, 2006), Philosophical Perspectives on Art (OUP, 2007), and Musical Understandings (OUP, 2011).

Why do we love art?

Why would a creature who evolved, such as us, possess a love and need for art? What possible survival value could art provide us?
Stephen Davies offers a very thorough examination of this question in The Artful Species, describing several accounts according to which we engage in art practices because of some sort of direct survival values this has, or because these practices are associated with something else that has more obvious survival value. Davies gives good arguments for and against each hypothesis.
This is not easy reading. Davies writes in the typical style of the philosophical essay. But if you slow down the pace of your reading a bit, you will find the clarity and precision of his writing rewarding.
While I applaud Davies' willingness to open his philosophical thinking to what is known about evolution--in fact his chapter on the current state of evolutionary theory makes an excellent primer--I would have liked him to say more about recent work in neuroaesthetics.

disorganized with irrelevavant arguments

The book is disorganized and noodled with less relevant topics to make the size of the book bigger. The main topic in the book is supposed to be if our art behavior and preferences are caused by evolution. But most chapters are scarcely related to this topic. For instance, one of the chapters is about if our perception of human beauty is caused by evolution. In order to repudiate this hypothesis, Davies says that our mating choice is based on personalities as well as appearance of other persons. But this has nothing to do with the question if human beauty was shaped by evolution, which in turn is unrelated to the question if the art behavior is caused by evolution. In the book, In order to support or reject many hypotheses, which are unrelated, Davies bring irrelevant arguments. Surprised to see that the OUP published this book.
