Philadelphia Museum of Art: Handbook of the CollectionsFrom Yale University Press

This fully updated and beautifully redesigned handbook is the essential guide to the encyclopedic collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Divided into four sections—Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Contemporary—the handbook features more than 500 masterpieces from the museum’s world-renowned holdings, each handsomely illustrated in color and accompanied by a brief text written by the museum’s curators. Each section integrates a wide variety of media, including paintings, works on paper, sculptures, decorative arts, costumes and textiles, arms and armor, and photography. Expanded entries provide in-depth information on some of the most historically significant and beloved objects, such as a 16th-century Indian temple hall, Grace Kelly’s wedding dress, and Marcel Duchamp’s Étant donnés. Other passages discuss the contributions of several of the museum’s most important donors, exploring the idea of the Philadelphia Museum of Art as “a collection of collections.”

Great Works of Art, Too Bad Not Coffee Table Size
By Elliot Silvera
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is one of our country's largest museums. I always wanted a book on this amazing museum in my art library. This slightly oversized handbook is a great introduction of the museum's Asian, European, American, and Contemporary collections. The book begins with a brief history of the museum and then the more than 500 works in different media are discussed in four sections. When perusing through the book one will notice the museum's great strength in the decorative arts. About half of the reproductions are of furniture, silver, ceramics, textiles, and even articles of clothing. Those who wanted a book just on the museum's fine paintings, drawings. and sculptures will be disappointed. Throughout the catalog are short essays on some of the most important donors.

Asia- The museum has one of the largest Asian collections. This section includes paintings, sculptures, prints, and decorative pieces from China, Japan, Korea, India, as well as from Southeast Asia. However, the most impressive works are in the field of Asian architecture. Illustrated are an Indian temple hall, a Japanese teahouse, and a Chinese scholar's study. Although, I loved this section, I wished for more Chinese paintings. There are only four or five highlighted.

Europe- This section includes works from the late medieval period to 1945. The museum is strongest in Renaissance, Dutch Baroque, French Impressionist and post Impressionist and early modern paintings and as I mentioned earlier the decorative arts. It also contains the second biggest collection of arms and armor in the United States. Some of the highlights include a Rogier van der Weyden diptych , Vincent van Gogh's "Sunflowers", Paul Cezanne's "The Large Bathers", a Pablo Picasso self portrait, Marcel Duchamp's "Nude Descending a Staircase" as well as important works by Sandro Boticelli, Peter Paul Rubens, Nicholas Poussin, Jan Steen, Camille Corot ,Edouard Manet, Auguste Renoir, and Henri Matisse. Other interesting canvases include the mysterious "Interior" by Edgar Degas, Anton Mauve's "Return of the Flock", one of the few Hague School works in an American museum, and Joan Miro's early "Horse, Pipe, and Red Flower", a Cubist inspired still life. When looking through this section, one will notice the lack of representation of women artists. "The Last Drop", a painting by Judith Leyster is the only featured work by a European female. Also illustrated are works from the museum's sister art institution, the Rodin Museum which holds the largest selection of works by the French sculptor, Auguste Rodin outside Paris.

The Americas- This section broadly covers the history of American art from colonial times to the early 1940s. The museum has the largest collection of works by Thomas Eakins and is also strong in furniture and crafts created in Pennsylvania. The book also discusses important paintings by the Peales ,"the first family" of American art, Mary Cassatt, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Winslow Homer, and Georgia O'Keeffe. This section also showcases the museum's growing Latin American collection most notably works from colonial Mexico. The chapter ends with one of the museum's most iconic pieces, Grace Kelly's wedding ensemble.

Contemporary- This section covers the period from the postwar era to the present. As not a big fan of abstract sculpture, minimalist painting, and modern design, this section didn't interest me as much. However, I did enjoy two figurative paintings, Andrew Wyeth's "Groundhog Day" and Romare Bearden's collage, "The Blue Snake" as well as several photographs by major figures such as Paul Strand, Robert Frank, and Dorothea Lange.

Despite some minor flaws, I enjoyed this book. Too bad the museum didn't want to publish it as a coffee table book which I would have preferred. Most times, I don't like art catalogs in handbook format because images are quite small and details are not clear. However, I was surprised how large most reproductions were. There were no more than two works to a page. If you want to learn more about this major museum, I would strongly recommend.
