A fine moment in art history -

This is the catalogue for the amazing exhibition that has been at Washington"s National Museum of Women in the Arts this winter. I'm not a big fan of religious art, but I have to say that this exhibit's approach to the subject of Mary as a cultural and historic icon is beautifully presented. It goes to show that a good curator can make any subject interesting to the broadest cross-section of audiences. The range of artists represented in this show is awe-insping. The bigger names include Botticelli, Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Lippi, and Durer, but there are plenty of other artists less known to the general public that have works in the exhibition that are memorable.
The hardbound (160 pages) book is very nicely illustrated--colors are true and the sequence of paintings is true to the actual exhibition.

Mary at the National Museum of Women in the Arts

Wilhelmina Cole Holladay, Founder and Chair of the Board of Trustees of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, writes in her forward to this volume that an exhibition of artworks centered around the Virgin Mary was an idea that had occurred to her long ago because, the purpose of the Museum being to show the contribution of women to the history of art, it seemed obvious that no woman has inspired more art or been depicted more often than Mary. That project has now come to fruition in this exhibition mounted at the Museum from December 2014 until April 2015. It draws on over thirty lenders worldwide and was curated by Msgr. Timothy Verdon, Canon of the Florence Cathedral and Director of the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, who has also edited the catalogue. Dr. Verdon, who earned a Ph.D. in art history at Yale long before becoming a priest, has lived in Florence for several decades and has written extensively on its art and architecture and on the figure of the Virgin in Western art. In his general introduction to the catalogue, he discusses the various guises under which Mary has been considered in the history of Christian art: as Madonna and child, as a simple woman and mother, as mother of the crucified son, as an idea and symbol of the church, etc. This provides a background for the three scholarly essays that follow, all of which are by women academics who have also written widely on the subject. These essays are broadly historical and general considerations with very little specifically artistic or aesthetic commentary. They range in topic from Mary's great adaptability to the needs of those who have needed her to her role either as warrior in defense of Christian Europe against Islamic invasion or as diplomat in the harmonization of Islamic and Christian sensibilities. Indeed, if there is one thing that stands out in these essays, it is Mary's great malleability as image and idea.
That is apparent also in the variety of the exhibits, which are primarily paintings, but also include graphic work, sculpture in a variety of mediums, and some works in cloth. Altogether, there are seventy-one full-page reproductions of the exhibition items, plus some blown up details, and the essays themselves are illustrated by about thirty-five companion images, some of which are also full-page. The reproductions are all excellent in color and clarity. They go from the early fourteenth century until the late nineteenth--with the majority falling somewhere in the Renaissance--and from fairly familiar works like Veronese's great "Allegory of the Battle of Lepanto" (1572; not in the exhibition, but used as a chapter frontispiece), Barocci's "Rest on the Flight into Egypt" (1570-73), lent by the Vatican, and several of Dürer's woodcuts on the life of the Virgin from the National Gallery in Washington. There are also some less familiar artists, like Elisabetta Sirani (1638-1665) and Orsola Maddalena Caccia (1596-1676) and quite a number who were completely new to me and whom I look forward to discovering more about. But to name some additional artists presented, just to indicate the variety and eminence of the reproductions: Duccio, Fra Lippo Lippi, Luca della Robbia, Mantegna, Botticelli, Carpaccio, Michelangelo, Pontormo, Titian, Anguissola, Vasari, Caravaggio, Gentileschi, Guercino, et. al. This is, in other words, a beautifully illustrated collection of significant art, and as such it stands out among the whole library of volumes on Marian imagery and is warmly recommended.

I purchased this book for a colleague who shares the same name as a going-away present. This book is a masterpiece and provides a wonderful trip through the ages of Mary, just as the title states, a woman, mother, idea. I'm tempted to purchase the book for myself from an art history perspective.
