These disparate forces were later amalgamated--by force--into the Communist-dominated People's Army. Thereafter their motley array of clothing, weapons and equipment became rather more uniform as the Soviet Union provided support and supplies on a large scale. Featuring specially commissioned full-color artwork, this second part of a two-part study depicts the fighting men of the Republican forces that strove to retain control of Spain alongside thousands of international volunteers.

About the Author
Alejandro de Quesada is a Florida-based military history writer, an experienced researcher, and collector of militaria, photos and documents. He runs an archive and historical consultancy for museums and films as a secondary business. Alejandro has written over 100 articles and over 25 books, including several for Osprey, and is a leading authority on Latin American subjects. The author lives in Tampa, FL.

The conflict before World War II - The rest of the story...

The brutal civil war that broke out in Spain in 1936 ravaged that country for three years, leaving behind the Nationalist Franco regime that persisted until 1975. It is remembered outside Spain as a proving ground for weapons and troops by future adversaries in the Second World War, most notably the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, and Fascist Italy. This book, on the Republican forces, is the second of two Osprey Man-at-Arms books on the topic by Alejandro de Quesada. The first book covered the nationalist forces; they are best read in sequence.
The author provides a brief introduction to the Spanish Second Republic and a Republican-oriented chronology of the Civil War before launching into the heart of the narrative, a description of the various military formations who fought on the Republican side. Those forces were a confusing mixture of loyal military, police and regional militia units, along with various militarized political parties, armed workers, and foreign volunteers. Their equipment was a quartermaster's nightmare of standard issue Spanish military items, smuggled foreign weapons, and military aid provided by the Soviet Union, among others. The excellent selection of period photographs, illustrations, and color plates illustrates the bewildering diversity of uniforms improvised by the Republican forces.
The author's narrative strives to avoid judgments on the tangled politics of the Civil War in favor on concentrating on the topic at hand. The account is highly readable and filled with good details despite its short length. Strongly recommended as an good introduction to the topic.
