The Cooper River is a meandering tributary of the Delaware River in Camden County with a rich cultural heritage. Along the Cooper River, English Quakers found safe haven from religious persecution in Colonial times, and General Washingtons soldiers fought for control of Coopers Ferry during the American Revolution. The river was ideal for industry in Camden, where many immigrants worked in the factories along its banks. From 1925 to 1928, landscape architect Charles Leavitt Jr. designed the plans for the 550-acre Cooper River Park. From 1935 to 1939, Roosevelts Works Progress Administration carried out the plans to create open, gently sloping landscapes and wooded areas for recreation by dredging meadows and tidal wetlands. Along the Cooper River: Camden to Haddonfield focuses on the communities of Camden, Pennsauken, Cherry Hill, Collingswood, Haddon Township, and Haddonfield and how each of them has played a unique role in the long and rich history of the river and its evolution into a nationally significant recreational area.

Eye candy for people who enjoy Cooper River Park
By Paul W. Schopp
From the formerly dense industrial corridor comprising its first two miles to its bucolic setting in Haddonfield and Cherry Hill, the Cooper River flows through the heart of Camden County, New Jersey. Initially a route of transport and commerce, the stream’s beauty began to attract those seeking recreation late in the nineteenth century. During the 1920s, renowned planner Charles W. Leavitt observed all the potential the Cooper River had to offer the citizens of Camden County and the region when he began designing a park along its banks between Camden and Haddonfield-Cherry Hill. Today the Cooper River Park annually serves thousands of people, who walk or run along the park’s paths, while often unaware that the waterway once powered mills or farmers shipped produce to market from wharves and landings along its banks. For those who use the park and those with an interest in local history, Along the Cooper River will offer you a deeper appreciation for the Cooper River of yesteryear and why it remains an indispensable part of life today.
