About the Author
ROGER WATSON is a world authority on the early history of photography. He is currently the Curator of the Fox Talbot Museum at Lacock Abbey and an occasional lecturer at DeMontfort University in Leicester.
HELEN RAPPAPORT is a historian with a specialization in the nineteenth century. She is the New York Times bestselling author of The Romanov Sisters, as well as eight other published books, including The Last Days of the Romanovs and A Magnificent Obsession: Victoria, Albert and the Death that Changed the Monarchy.

Excellent telling of the Fathers of Photography - A Very Good Read!

I have read many books on the history of photography, genre, aesthetics, technology, and as art, but this book takes a somewhat different approach. The author’s stated theme is focused on the two inventors of photography, one a Frenchman, the other a Brit. Many may argue otherwise, but photography had two fathers, Louis Daguerre with Nicéphore Niépce as precursor and partner, and Henry Fox Talbot bringing to the world two completely different photographic systems, a unique direct positive on a silvered copper plate, the other a negative positive process on paper.
The authors provide a narrative filled with the personal history of the lives of each man, their relationships, their failures, and their successes. This is a well-composed book, some would say, “an easy read” as it takes the narrative form almost of a novel.
Other people besides Daguerre and Talbot enter the narrative, in particular Nicéphore Niépce, Isidore Niépce, and François Arago. But there are also others, such as Sir John Hershel, Sir David Brewster, Thomas Wedgwood, the largely unknown Alphonse Hubert, and Frederick Scott Archer.
However, the last several chapters move away from the narrative of Daguerre and Talbot and follow the technological advances that occurred after the Calotype and Daguerreotype of these two inventors, such as Archer’s wet plate collodion. The authors then follow the accepted trajectory of photographic history, ending with the technology of today.
The authors provide strong references and an extensive bibliography that if one were so inclined would provide anyone with an effective pathway to further study.
I rate this book highly, not only as a resource, but also mostly as a good read, and as the cover proclaims, “A true story of genius, rivalry and the birth of photography.”

for the lover of the origins of photography

I am fascinated with that time in history as well as the origins of photography. This is an entertaining and informative story of both. I really enjoyed the 1st half of the book, but thought the last 30 % was repetitive. That all said, happy with the time spent reading it.

Good read!

As a photography (and photo history) teacher, this was a joy to read. Very light for the most part, but some interesting new info that I had not found before. Written well enough to be enjoyed by anyone interested in history in general, I think this was a fun read.
