I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes photography

I really enjoyed reading this book. I wish I could have read it 20 years ago when I was contemplating a career in wedding photography. I probably would have done it after reading this book instead of photography just as a hobby. Like the author I too enjoy doing weddings (as an amateur). Even someone who has been doing wedding photography for a while can probably benefit from some of the information in this book.
I really thought the chapters detailing the initial interview with the bride, the reason for a "sales" contract (as opposed to a service contract) and the list of must have photos were excellent. While I did some work as an amateur photographer at events,doing my own poses, my passion was getting the perfect candid photos. I was never hired for money but did this as a hobby for people I knew. I received many compliments on the photos I took. I was told many times that I should charge for my photos. I guess I just lacked the confidence (before digital cameras came out) to make this my career. Film and processing cost money and I didn't have the luxury of previewing photos on the spot. I just clicked away and hoped that there was a good image in the bunch.
Like Mr. Collins I never displayed photos of a person not at their best. Believe me when I say that people do appreciate that and they do remember when a photographer doesn't show some empathy. There is no need to embarrass someone. I always asked myself if I would mind being seen like that for eternity. Most people want to forget an embarrassing moment; not have it preserved forever.
The author's short stories (the good, the bad and the ugly) were also very entertaining.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone getting into or starting out in the wedding photography business. There are many useful pieces of information and insights in this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed every page

My only regret after reading this book is, it wasn't available 15 years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed every page, including the forms. I did wedding photography for 4 years, and I could have done a much better job if I'd had the knowledge offered in this book. From posing, to legalities, if you plan to have a camera in hand at a wedding, you REALLY need this book. Whether you are a Mamarazzi, (gotta buy the book to understand the word), a professional wedding photographer, or a relative of the bride, this book is a must.

Poor examples, very little info, too much fluff

Collin's book is 70% memoir and only 30% instructional. This deficit of information is not clear from the description or even from the introduction in the book itself. You get a few sample documents, a couple chapters of vague tips, and LOTS of reminiscing that is only slightly informative or applicable to a learning photographer. Many superfluous passages ramble on about how great the training was at the photography school that he attended. Since his readers probably bought the book in order to save the tuition money and learn on their own, this seems completely unnecessary and kind of condescending. "Look at me, I have lots of training that I won't share with you!" As an instructional book author myself (in a completely different topic area) I find this book to be extremely lacking in actual helpful facts. Also, for being so full of himself, the author includes almost no photos that I would call professional. The amateurish snapshots that he does include are also seemingly randomly placed in the book. For instance, in the section on formal portraits there are zero formal portraits used as examples. Why not? How can we expect to learn anything about portraiture from someone who won't show us an example of his own work from 45 years of photos? The cover photograph is also obviously and poorly photoshopped. I would not hire Bill to photograph my wedding based on the pictures included in this book. That's probably a bad sign. I feel bad for his previous clients who could have hired their cousin to take these pictures with a point and shoot.
In terms of the writing there are many typos and proofreading errors and the book repeats itself, almost verbatim at times, as if Collins didn't read through the book after he had finished writing it. In fact, often I felt as though I was reading an inline forum post and not a printed book.
To be fair there is some useful stuff in here, but not a book's worth.
