During his term in office, Nixon held thirteen jazz-related performances at the White House. This book pays homage to that handful of iconic entertainers who graced the East Room stage: singers Pearl Bailey, Peggy Lee, and Frank Sinatra; pianists Henry Mancini, Bobby Short, and Billy Taylor; New Orleans musicians Pete Fountain and Al Hirt; and the instrumental groups the Modern Jazz Quartet and the World's Greatest Jazz Band.
In assembling these profiles, the author drew on published sources as well as archival taped performances, transcribing everything from Nixon's introductory and closing remarks to the statements made by the stars to the reaction of the glitterati in the audience. For all the tunes played or sung, Faine provides details on their origins and the comments from attending journalists and critics. What do you get when you blend politics, music, and history with astute insight, storytelling talent, and polished wordsmithing? The answer is Edward Allan Faine’s The Best Gig In Town: Jazz Artists At The White House 1969-1974.
First, the politics. It wasn’t just musical merit or popularity with the American public that got these performers their best gig. Faine unveils the political calculations that drove Nixon’s selection of the performers. Being a supporter of the president’s party and policies definitely worked in favor of appearing at the White House, although it was not an exclusive criterion. Pianist Billy Taylor expressed surprise to be invited, saying, “I’m a registered Democrat!”
Then, the music and the history. Faine splits each chapter into two parts: background information on the performers, and a description of the concert. He outlines the trajectory of each artist starting with their life story and ending with the context of the White House performance in their overall career. Faine unfolds the actual concert blow-by-blow, listing each song in the order it was played and providing data on its composer and lyricist, then giving a report on how well the performance went.
The close-ups aren’t always flattering. After Peggy Lee unwisely swigged a stiff drink between songs, she rambled through multiple embarrassing speeches during the rest of her presentation. But Frank Sinatra, who gets the most pages in the book, drew tumultuous applause for his great song renditions and later received a fan letter from the president himself.
Faine engages the reader with writing that is focused and colorful, using a casual, informal tone that is suitable to the jazz topic. His penetrating choice of words keeps the narrative spicy: Nixon was “the most Shakespearian of American presidents”, while Peggy Lee had a “steamy pastel voice”. Faine’s knowledge of surprising details is at an expert level, but he is never pedantic or trivial, always keeping to the big picture. And he imparts the story with an undertone of balanced amusement at the realities of life, both political and musical.
On its topic, this definitely is the best book in town.

A Distinctive Venue

I received an export of this book compliments of NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are mine alone.
This book centers on the jazz performances presented at the Nixon White House from approximately 1970-1974. While it also covers other performers/genres who appeared there during that period, there is some background provided regarding the performers, the music chosen, the specific event (I.e., state dinner, etc.), planning, and protocol. Also provided are musical morsels about the history of the music and the the performers impressions and memories of the specific event(s).
While this is not necessarily my chosen reading material, I found this book interesting. Each event seemed to have its own flavor. The music chosen and the way it was presented clearly was designed to showcase an art form that was primarily American in nature and development. While I rather enjoyed the accounts of Nixon holding court during these performances and the arduous security clearances, I suspect many readers with musical backgrounds would be attracted to this book. Especially interesting to me were the things that went on behind the scenes during the Nixon Administration as these events were going on.
Well researched and written, this was a rather unique book that presented a lot of aspects to getting a really big gig unlike no other.

Nixon Gets the Blues

Best Gig in Town gives us a behind the scenes look at how the seemingly odd combination of Richard Nixon and jazz came together to provide stunning performances at the White House. Edward Allan Faine seamlessly intertwines his knowledge of music and politics to tell us how the performers were vetted and what the critics of the day said about them. Faine also compares the White House performances of various songs with their commercial recordings to tell how they differed. Pearl Bailey, Peggy Lee, Frank Sinatra and others combine music and quirky patter to keep the foreign dignitaries and high society guests entertained, while the Watergate scandal lurks in the background. Reading this book is the next best thing to being there.
