About the Author
Duy Linh Tu is a Professor and the Director of the Digital Media Program at the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. He is also a co-founder and the Creative Director of Resolution Seven, a documentary and commercial production house. He is a videographer, photographer, writer and multimedia consultant. Duy is a Fellow at the Tow Center For Digital Journalism, where he produced Video Now, a groundbreaking report on the video journalism industry. He is the director of photography and producer of the award-winning documentary deepsouth. Duy shoots, produces, and consults for publications such as The New York Times and The Washington Post. Duy is a juror for the National Magazine Awards and the DuPont Awards, and has judged the POYi Awards. He received his M.S. degree in journalism from Columbia University.

A Multimedia Journalist's Bible

Visual journalist are not just cinematographers. And we're not just journalist. We use the ethical integrity of journalism and the richness of moving images to tell stories in varied formats (web shorts, mini-documentaries, and feature length films.)
Up until now, visual journalist have had to patch together best practices and pull from an assortment of books in order to create style guides and reference texts that meet the particular needs of our craft. I've personally purchased at least 3 books and pulled from a number of journalism school reference documents in order to develop guides for use in my work.
Feature and Narrative Storytelling for Multimedia Journalist is now my bible. In clearly organized and structured chapters, this book address all of a visual journalist's reference needs in one beautifully bound book. Covering everything from the technical aspects of pre-production, field production, and post-production to the elements of visual and narrative style; this book is a must for rookie and veteran.

I think this book is a first of its kind. Video storytelling for the web is still such uncharted terrain for many orgs and as an early-career video journalist, I am so glad I now have a book that consolidates all the important aspects of video storytelling. Its the perfect balance of being a practical guide book (covering technical basics, chapter exercises and even appearance/location release samples!) as well as getting into some of the nitty gritty's of actual storytelling (tips on warming up to subjects, how to ask better questions, finding a focus in your story). There are also some great case studies and Q&As with documentary and news producers that offer great perspective.

A must-read for beginners

This easy-to-digest volume packs the essentials of narrative video. Duy Linh Tu definitely knows what he's talking about; the book offers technical tips (video codecs, what equipment to use, interview and framing techniques), but more importantly, the importance of storytelling and how to develop a better story. It also includes interviews from journalists from VICE, NPR, etc, and gives a helpful glimpse of what it's like to do video journalism on the field. Highly recommended -- this is a very good textbook for anyone who wants to get into multimedia journalism.
