Sam Maronie has been an entertainment reporter for over four decades. He started as a TV columnist in the early 1970s, and soon began writing feature articles about film and pop-culture for such publications as Seventeen Magazine, The St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Starlog Magazine and many others. Maronie’s pop-culture blog, is Sam Maronies Entertainment Funhouse, www.sammaronie.com. Pop Culture Love Letter

Sam Maronie is a man who has taken his love of film, television and comics and distilled it into this very accessible book that is part memoir, part pop-culture love letter.
Growing up in the middle of the United States, just outside St. Louis, could not be considered ideal if you yearned to write about the world of pop-culture, which, depending on the type, is based on one of the coasts. But Maronie's enthusiasm could not be limited by something as incidental as geography. His extensive knowledge of movies earned him a weekly column in his hometown newspaper as a critic/television columnist at the tender age of 17. His first celebrity encounter was the occasion of a tennis match in St. Louis attended by Charlton Heston and James Franciscus. Almost like a scene from a screwball comedy, Maronie and a friend, (who was adept at creating realistic press credentials and other official-looking documents), glommed their way into the event's cocktail party. Heston and Franciscus generously obliged the eager reporter's questions and his first foray into the world of celebrity was an unqualified success. From that point there was no stopping him.
Maronie gained access to the great, near great and used-to-be-great celebrities that came through town on a promotional tour or to appear at the St. Louis Municiple Opera. His chapter about being invited to the set of "Battle of the Planet of the Apes" to appear as an extra is a fascinating look behind the scenes of movie production.
Since Maronie is also a life-long comic book fan, this book is replete with stories, interviews and photos of such comic luminaries as Jack Kirby, Stan Lee, Martin and Carrie Nodell, Marie Severin, Howard Chaykin, (who wrote the introduction), and others that any comic fan will recognize.
Maronie's book is so brimming with rare personal photos and interesting stories and anecdotes that reading it is more of an intimate conversation than a list of celebrity encounters. Make sure to read it if for no other reason than to learn how Sam Maronie made the Lone Ranger cry.

A Trip Worth Taking

Anyone who has enjoyed pop culture from the outside should get a real kick out of this insider's view. Sam Maronie has been there and done that. Like most of us, he loved comic books, movies and TV when growing up. But unlike most of us he turned that passion into a career, and a continuing adventure that's still going strong. From his early days writing a television column for his local newspaper, to his experiences wandering around the Fox Studios lot (and appearing as an extra in one of their "Planet Of The Apes" movies), to his visits to the legendary Ackermansion and its unequalled collection of sci-fi and monster memorabilia, the smiles never stop. Every chapter is chock full of personal memories and public encounters, interviews and friendships with the famous, the infamous and the should-have-been-famous. And it's all told in the straightforward and entertaining manner of a professional journalist writing about something he loves. So grab some popcorn, sit back, and share the journey.

Backstories, biographic, historical, career information, trivia on celebrities (okay, so they're not the youngest stars around, but they are older and better ones who survived and prospered and gave decades of movie-goers an infinity of amazing and moving and unforgetable cinematic memories and adventures.
