About the Author
Dave Golder (author) is a former editor of SFX magazine (which he helped to launch), SFX.co.uk and Comic Heroes magazine, but he first began writing professionally about science fiction with a regular feature in Your Sinclair called The Killer Kolumn From Outer Space. He has also written for various gaming magazines despite only ever having finished two games completely. And one of those was Kung Fu Panda.
Pat Mills (Foreword) is a comics editor and writer who has played a vital role in British comics since the 1970s. He is perhaps best known for his dystopian comics, such as Marshal Law and Requiem Vampire Knight, for founding 2000 AD and for playing a crucial role in the creation of Judge Dredd.

Dystopian primer speaks to a diverse audience

An impressive guide to dystopian fiction which ranges across different genres, such as: Fantasy, Sci Fi, the Gothic world and political satire. Gothic Dreams Dystopia refers to iconic films and novels presenting confronting and frightening worlds. The artwork is rich, detailed and enhances the grim nightmarish realms of dystopian fiction. The illustrations have the added feature of appealing to young adults to encourage them to look closer at texts that have inspired the pictures.
Dystopia is broken into sections beginning with Apocalypse Wow, evocative of tech noir which is inspired by films, such as Blade Runner and the Hunger Games. The latter is a film young adults are familiar with. This section as do others draws on the most up-to-date film and print as well as including and referring readers to classic dystopia, reminding them that these ideas have stood the test of time and been used as stimulus for more recent artists. Dystopia includes highly detailed double page spreads that are visually spectacular. This, however, doesn’t compromise the quality of the text.
Dystopia is a great starting point for people unfamiliar with dystopian fiction, but complex enough for experts to enjoy and build on. Dave Golder includes a glossary, bibliography, recommended reads, music, comics and useful websites – testimony to the book’s range and quality. Another example of how thoughtfully the book is put together is a quote from John Stuart Mill, a philosopher, which forms part of the discussion that begins with the novel, 1984. This section is titled: War of the Words: The Literary Dystopia, and explores classic and modern texts, including political commentary. Each category explains how themes are reworked and revisited in different times and social contexts. Golder acknowledges the importance of dystopian concepts in our culture: ‘Dystopian themes have penetrated deep into the zeitgeist, influencing not only TV shows, books, movies are also advertising, music, computer games and even fashion.’
