A bold visionary, Art Kane (1925–1995) explored a number of genres--fashion, editorial, celebrity portraiture, travel and nudes--with an unrelenting and innovative eye. Like his contemporaries Guy Bourdin and Helmut Newton, Kane developed a style that didn’t shy from strong color, eroticism and surreal humor. In 1958 Kane assembled the greatest legends in jazz and shot what became his most famous image, "Harlem 1958." In the 1960s and 1970s, Kane photographed, among others, the Rolling Stones, The Who, Cream, Janis Joplin, The Doors and Bob Dylan. While the battle for civil rights in America and the Vietnam War raged, Kane was refining a conscientious response to the period with editorial work that was powerfully accessible and populist in its desire to communicate to a large audience. This is the first time Kane’s work has been collected into one volume. Beautifully curated, it is a fitting tribute to one of photography’s most original and creative forces.

Review
Kane's portraits of rockers from Dylan to Joplin have an artistic panache that links them with his bold fashion imagery: the look of an illustrator with a camera. (American Photo Magazine's Top 10 Photo Books of 2014) (American Photo Magazine, December 1, 2014)

Full of stunning images of the Stones and Cream alongside figures like Lenny Bruce, from a photographer who lived for the perfect shot. (Rolling Stone, January 16, 2015)

Art Kane's creative legacy gets deserved attention with the publication of the new book Art Kane. This one is a must for anyone interested in photo history. (January 22, 2015)

This book is the definitive statement of Art Kane. (Mike Foldes, Ragazine February 2015)

The first and only definitive collection of Kane’s work, the book provides a comprehensive survey not only of the enduring music photography that followed the “Harlem 1958” photograph, but also Kane’s work on social issues, fashion, editorial and celebrity portraiture. (Eliza Berman Time, February 6, 2015)

Take a long, hard look: it's marvelous. And did you see the list of contributors! We should be thankful for everyone who made this book possible.

In the turbulent cultural climate of the 1960's and 70's Art Kane's images informed, educated and illuminated as much as any published essay. Looking at an Art Kane image dealing with social issues such as civil rights, the war in Vietnam, apartheid ... could teach you as much as reading a book on the topic because of the laser focus he brought to his image making. (Tom Semioli Huffington Post, April 13, 2015)

Page after page of his work has a timeless quality and can feel as contemporary as anything being made now. Although his name is less remembered than at the height of his career, many of his images are iconic, unforgettable and forever burned into our pop consciousness. (Tyler Hubby Artillery Magazine, June 2015)

... Art Kane's work since I first stumbled across "A Great Day in Harlem
By Mitchell Landsberg
I've admired Art Kane's work since I first stumbled across "A Great Day in Harlem." This book, though, is a revelation -- gorgeous, inventive, funny, heartfelt, and beautifully designed and printed. Highly recommended, especially for anyone interested in rock 'n roll, 1960s fashion or life.

A brilliant retrospective of one of the world's great talents long overdue.
By Jack Ward, Ph.D.
Art Kane's images are unlike those of any other photographer. His work was an interpretive illustration of the subject he was photographing. Most of the time he knew what he wanted a photograph to look like before he picked the camera up; however, his mind was always wide open to the unexpected.

I had the privilege of working with him for the first five years of his career as a photographer. The quote, " I consider myself a conceptual photographer," is exactly what he was. I got to see the time and research he put into an image long before he ever picked up the camera. His way of seeing, thinking, and the photographs were always provocative. His mind and imagination were always working. He was serious about his work, but never took himself seriously.

This book represents one man's quest to have people see things differently and think about the images you are looking at. You will find yourself thinking about the photographs long after you have seen them, and you will want to go back to them again and again.

Art Kane loved photography and the book is a labor of love. The photographs flow from one to the other with a smoothness that gives one the feeling of having been there while he was shooting.

The master knocks your socks off
By Frank A. Fetter
I was Art Kane's last photographic assistant before he gave up the studio in Carnegie Hall. We did amazing assignments. The big picture magazines were still alive: Life, Look, Esquire, etc. Art created the most powerful photographic essays ever: The Religious Grounds of the American Indian, The American Family, The Songs Of Bob Dylan, Trucking in America, etc.. He literally drew the pictures before we ever put film in a camera. He was a master designer. We discussed each subject for hours and hours. I loved the man and I love his images. I was hoping to see the entire essay rather than selected images. His illustrations of the songs of the Beatles is why I chose photography as my career after college. I was the luckiest 20 something in the world to work with him. Besides the editorial work he also made some of the most powerful advertising images. I wish we could have seen some of them in the book but I understand the difficulty in doing so. Thank you for publishing his work. Cheers Jonathan.
