About the Author

Ana M. Jaramillo holds a BSc in architecture (2003), MS in architectural acoustics (2005) and a PhD in architecture (2013). Her previous roles include: Acoustical Consultant (2003-2008); Acoustics Professor and Researcher at the Instituto Tecnologico Metropolitano in Medellin, Colombia (2006-2008); and Instructor at Virginia Tech, USA (2012). Ana currently works for AFMG in North America.

Chris Steel, BSc (Hons), MPhil, MIOA, ICIOB, is Senior Acoustic Consultant at the Robin Mackenzie Partnership and Senior Research Fellow at Edinburgh Napier University, UK, focusing on building and environmental acoustics. Chris also lectures to MSc students on architectural acoustics and is a tutor for the Institute of Acoustics Diploma in Acoustics.

A Definite Must-Read for Songwriters/Artists!

Just read the book this morning, and loved it! I think it offers valuable insight not only into Music Xray's business model, but also into the music industry in general. This information is especially critical to writers/artists who are just beginning to expose their work, as it tells them what NOT to do as well as what to do. Obtaining access to a music industry professional/decision-maker who can make something happen with your music can be quite challenging, so you want to be sure you can deliver the goods when you have the opportunity! That means making your product as good as it can be by getting feedback along the way from like-minded artists/writers, songwriting organizations, etc. (not just family members who love everything you do). The book offers up several suggestions on how to do this.

I think Music Xray itself offers numerous opportunities that are legitimate, so it's a great vehicle by which to place your music. I echo the comments in the book in saying that the better job we as artists do in submitting/targeting quality material, the longer music industry professionals will continue to be open to receiving material through this channel.

The book does a great job in explaining the ins-and-outs of Music Xray. I learned several new things myself and I'm sure I'll will refer to it often!

This review is from Rod Brown. I found the book helpful in offering an MIPs perspective (what they are looking for, what they are not!) I've pitched songs -through Music Xray for about two years now and have signed with three MIPs.- and I'm currently holding my breath with several tunes that have been put on hold. I appreciate getting a peek at what's behind the music Wizard's Curtain and I appreciate Norman Dolph's tips on the importance of presentation, the reminder to pay attention to the diagnostics, and above all to carefully select one's very best material -rather than using the shotgun approach to submissions. I've always appreciated Music Xrays transparency and this book is true to that philosophy!

Eliminate the music industry middle-man!

Excellent, down-to-earth songwriting and song pitching advice from an established music industry professional is mixed generously throughout this how-to book on successful song submissions to the Music Xray service. In my opinion, this is well worth the time to read for all songwriters, from the most accomplished to newbies. While the tone sometimes veers from strictly informational into almost-adulation for Music Xray, this book still makes many valid points about how the music biz has changed with current technological advances. Inspired by reading it, I went online and researched the company and "scam" complaints from songwriters who were dissatisfied with their feedback and results, and what I found was that virtually all of their songs had been rejected for very legitimate reasons. Great songwriters can rejoice that sub-par songs are being weeded-out by services like Music Xray, thus de-muddying the waters for truly good songs to reach MIPs who can ultimately buy and use them! Bravo, Mr. Dolph!

Snobby and boring

I really despise this book. I feel like the author has an incredibly elitist attitude and the book was monotonous. The accompanying DVD was useless product promotion. In addition it all feels a bit outdated to me (the references to technology certainly are of course). There are better books out there now on this topic, IMO.

Don't waste you money on this one. By the time you've finished the preview on your Kindle, you've only read through the index. The chapters on the singers are really brief and lack anything of real interest. This book(?) is a looser!!

About the Author
Bill Dal Cerro is the former president of the Italic Institute of America and the associate producer of the PBS special And They Came to Chicago: The Italian American Legacy. His works have appeared in Ambassador Magazine, Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, Fra Noi, Los Angeles Times, and The Washington Post. David Anthony Witter is a photographer, blues musician, and teacher. He is the author of Chicago Magic, Oldest Chicago, and has contributed to The Best of the Chicago Blues Annual and The Italian American Experience: An Encyclopedia. They both live in Chicago.

A Most Interesting Historical Work in the Field of Jazz

The best of any coverage of Italians and Italian-Americans in jazz. The names of many of these jazz artists are well-known, and some, not so well-known -- many of their names have been changed from their Italian- or Italian-American heritage. A great historical romp through the history of jazz, also. I highly recommend this book for your libraries.

I found this book entertaining and informative. Cerro and Witter did much research in compiling this text. It reads as if a cousin were telling you stories, not just historically, but with the personal anecdotes that really bring the stories to life. This book has further prompted my interest in jazz and desire to explore more of the offerings of live music.

I highly recommend this text.

The perfect coffee table book for the Rush fan

I love having this out as a coffee table book. It's not only cool for those of us who love RUSH, but it seems to be a book that's interesting enough for the non-Rush fans (or at least non-initiated) to leaf through and have their curiosity piqued. The art is varied and plentiful and ultimately just a really cool book for the Rush fan.

I purchased this book through Kickstarter and it arrived less than a week ago. The quality is awesome and the mash-ups and puns in each of the illustrations are just golden. If you're a Rush fan or just a fan of music in general this book will be a great add to your collection.

One can simply not give this monster publication the true high accolade it deserves in mere typed words. This is a golden purchase! I loved receiving my book and sifting through the pages, giggling like a little child at the gorgeous anecdotal Rush inspired cartoony humor, cute movie inspired artwork and awesome cereal boxes. One does not need to be a hardcore Rush fan to appreciate the immense talent and hard sweat that has poured into the pages of this magnificent book. I love witnessing the magic and work that must have taken an intense effort, and I wonder how artists can be so talented, and the love and passion poured into the pages of this fine publication truly shows. Thank you for a great coffee table book! Couldn't recommend this highly enough!

Captain James Cook is justly famous for his explorations of the southern Pacific Ocean, but his contributions to the exploration of the northern Pacific and the Arctic are arguably equally significant. On his third and final great voyage, Cook surveyed the northwest American coast in the hopes of finding the legendary Northwest Passage. While dreams of such a passage proved illusory, Cook’s journey produced some of the finest charts, collections, and anthropological observations of his career, helped establish British relations with Russia, and opened the door to the hugely influential maritime fur trade.

Accompanying an exhibition of the same name, Arctic Ambitions: Captain Cook and the Northwest Passage sheds new light on Cook’s northern exploration. A collection of essays from an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars, the book uses artifacts, charts, and records of the encounters between Native peoples and explorers to tell the story of this remarkable voyage and its historical context. In addition to discussing Cook’s voyage itself, the book also provides new insights into Cook’s legacy and his influence on subsequent expeditions in the Pacific Northwest. Neglects the consequences for Native peoples

In many ways, this is an excellent book describing the adventures of not one, but several explorers. It comes at a time in which very big oil companies are waiting for the melting of the sea ice, which will aid them considerably in arctic oil exploration and cut thousands of miles off the routes between Europe and Asia. This work comes as a caution: don't expect the routes through the arctic to be reliable, open, and stable for any time soon.

"Arctic Ambitions" is an ambitious anthology, with each chapter written by an expert and filled with brilliant full-color reproductions of rare and early maps and illustrations gathered from museums and collections throughout the world. It focuses first on Captain Cook's third voyage from 1776 to 1778, the purpose of which was: 1. to find the Northwest Passage, 2. to map the outlines of America's northwest coast, and 3. to claim for Great Britain any territories not yet claimed by Russia and Spain.

The work also covers George Vancouver's subsequent voyage (1794-1794) to finish Cook's work. While Cook's voyage stimulated the rush to the northwest for harvesting the pelts of seals and ocean otters, Vancouver's voyage was more successful in mapping. Though Cook was a thoroughly accomplished map maker, he used "running surveys" taken from his ships. Vancouver, however, sent his men rowing in long boats into the waterways and inlets to give us a much more detailed map of the North American coast from San Diego to Point Barrow. It was to remain the state-of-the-art map of the area for over a hundred years.

Because Cook had been instructed to not "waste time" exploring the waterways and rivers south of the 65th parallel, he started at Nootka Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island and did not bother to explore the the Strait of Juan de Fuca, now the border between Canada and Washington State. This Vancouver did, and very thoroughly. In less than a month, Vancouver discovered and named some the most prominent features of modern-day Washington State, including Puget Sound, Admiralty Inlet, Whidbey and Vashon Islands, Mounts Rainier and Baker, Hood Canal, Port Orchard, Port Discovery, Possession Sound, Restoration Point, Deception Pass, and Bellingham Bay.

One purpose of Vancouver's expedition was to administer the Nootka Convention, which had previously settled the conflict between Spain and Great Britain over possession claims in Nootka Sound, nearly bringing the two countries to war. Vancouver made amicable contacts with Spanish authorities in Nootka to proceed with the agreement and to sign two more Nootka Conventions.

While Vancouver did not share the same interest that Captain Cook had in the lives and customs of the northwest Natives, his crew regularly regularly met and traded with the coastal Salish, Kwaqiutl, Nuu-cha-nulth, Haida,Tlingit, Alutiiq, and Dena'ina peoples. Vancouver's exhaustive survey would not have been possible without the assistance of the these people.

While Cook discovered and claimed for England the inlet in Alaska named after him, he left it thinking it might be a great river that might extend into the deep interior of the continent, perhaps to Hudson Bay. In his later exploration of the inlet, Vancouver noted that, had Cook gone just a few miles further into the inlet, he would have easily seen his error.

Cook was surprised at discovering the appreciation of northern natives for private property and their readiness to trade. The appearance of his ships in a harbor was often met with swarms of natives in canoes with furs and food to trade, mostly for beads and metal tools like axes and shovels. Neither Cook nor Vancouver made the mistake of offering them guns in trade.

While both Cook and Vancouver expressed their disgust and anger over the degraded condition of Natives caused by their exploitation by Russian and American fur traders, the authors of Arctic Ambitions do not go further into the catastrophic effects of early European contacts. For example, none of the authors mention Vancouver's entering Native villages in which no one was left alive, possibly the results of small pox brought to the area by the Spanish in their 200-year presence in the area.

While the Russians had opened a hospital in Sitka, it was closed soon after the purchase of Alaska by the U.S. in 1886. Nearly a hundred years would pass before a hospital would be built in Alaska serving coastal Natives.

The last few chapters of the book go into the prospects of the retreating sea ice offering all-year transit to the companies drilling for oil on the arctic regions of the continental shelf. Many problems will have to take be solved before that becomes a reliable option, including the development of new arctic ports and the marine infrastructure required by the regular transit of very large ships.

McLean, Virginia, a whistle stop along the Great Falls & Old Dominion Railroad, came about in 1910. It was named after John R. Liberty's of London on Display

This book is a treasurehouse of information, inspiration, and beauty! The story of Arthur Liberty and how he built his shops and selected his wares with such passion is well described throughout the book. The multitude of illustrations demonstrate these treasures as the Liberty collection grew throughout the years. It is a special delight to find enclosures, showing posters, adverts, and various enticements to which customers were treated.
I first discovered Liberty's of London in 1960 and was entranced by the abundance of beautiful, high-quality goods. That started what turned out to be my life-long collection of Liberty scarves, fabrics, and clothing. Several yards of the very pattern featured on the cover, "Frieze" by Bernard Nevill (1968), with which I was entranced, I stitched into a large quilted wall hanging and pillow covers for our living room. The designs are ever-lasting and I was delighted to find the collection so excellently escried in this fascinating volume. I have given copies of the book to several members of my family and expect to create and teach a course on Masters of British Design and Style based on Arthur Liberty and Josiah Wedgwood. Thanks for this book!

This book is for anyone interested in Liberty of London from its beginning to the present. Gorgeous book with a very interesting layout. There are many pockets in the book that contain historical advertising reprints and other surprise papers. Interesting reading about Liberty's history.

Combining close readings of a broad range of archival sources, Morshed offers new interpretations of works such as Hugh Ferriss’s Metropolis drawings, Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion houses, and Norman Bel Geddes’s Futurama exhibit at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Transformed by the populist imagination into “master builders,” these designers helped produce a new form of visuality: the aesthetics of ascension.

By demonstrating how aerial movement and height intersect with popular “superman” discourses of the time, Morshed reveals the relationship between architecture, art, science, and interwar pop culture. Adnan Took Me To School...Again

As a proud former student of Adnan Morshed, I can tell you that his approach to writing Impossible Heights is akin to his approach to pedagogy - engaging, insightful, thorough, and thought-provoking. He lucidly explains how human fascination with flight and height had dramatic (and arguably abysmal) implications on architecture and civic planning in the 20th century. This book is a must read for any aspiring architect or history buff. 5 stars!

Morshed's new book is a scholarly triumph for a number of reasons. First, it is one of the first works to treat Hugh Ferriss--one of the most influential architectural thinkers and artists of the first half of the twentieth century--with the depth and complexity that he deserves. Countless scholarly works refer to Ferriss, but Morshed actually enables the reader to get to know Ferriss, to peer inside of his head and start to understand how his utopian dreams of a sublimely reformed modern metropolis took shape and exerted influence. It is also great that Morshed embedded his study of Ferriss in a larger discussion of utopian urban visions including those of Norman Bel Geddes and Buckminster Fuller. His comparison of these three figures reveals that, in this energetic but uncertain time in American history, having the knowledge and sensitivity of an architect was somehow less important than having the goggle-framed eyes and sky-high ambitions of an aviator or a "superman." The godlike aerial gaze made available by aircraft and skyscrapers thrilled designers and the public alike. Of course, designing buildings, neighborhoods, and cities "from the air," as one might lay out a circuit board, instead of with the view of the pedestrian (or even the motorist) foremost in mind has today become synonymous with the creation of un-intuitive, out-of-scale, and generally alienating places, but the ongoing prevalence of bird's eye programming in architecture schools and practices makes Morshed's book all the more important. How is it that we came to see placemaking as an aerial pursuit for heroic industrial engineers and technological wizards? Impossible Heights goes a long way to answering this question. May this excellent book inspire more equally strong and valuable scholarship, and encourage more critical discourse on ways we might improve our world. On this last point, perhaps we could start by encouraging architects and engineers to strap on parachutes and return to earth.

THE CITY AS DRAMA.

We are here to celebrate Adnan Morshed’s new book:
Impossible Heights: Skyscrapers, Flight, and the Master Builder.

Morshed sets out on a very ambitious task, to trace how the new experience of flying inspired what he aptly named an “aesthetic of ascension”. According to Morshed, flying enabled a shift in perspective, seeing the city from above, from the bird’s eye view, instead of from below, the worm’s eye view, and in motion, instead of a fixed point. Flying induced the desire to reshape the industrial city and seduced architects, planners and the public into believing in the need for a brave new world, a new Utopia.

Morshed tells us a history of the modern city through this shift in perspective. This is a book full of insights and surprises. Morshed is also an excellent writer, erudite yet accessible. He engages us with the modern city as a drama. What kind of drama? I encourage you to read Impossible Heights and decide for yourself.
