Bruce Bairnsfather was the most loved and remains the most famous cartoonist of World War I. His mix of stunning images and wry, humorous captions have shaped how many see the war. Captain Bruce Bairnsfather joined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in 1914 and served with a machine gun unit until 1915 when he was hospitalized with shell shock after the Second Battle of Ypres. As he recovered, he revisited the trenches from his hospital bed through his amusing and richly detailed cartoons, which were published in the Bystander and he became one of the British Tommies' favorite cartoonists of the war. He then became well-known in America during World War II.

Lucinda Gosling is the former manager of the magazine archive of the Illustrated London News and is currently historical specialist at Mary Evans Picture Library. She has contributed to History Today, Majesty, and Illustration magazine, and is the author of Brushes & Bayonets and Debutantes and the London Season.

The Bill Mauldin of World War I

I first saw a Bruce Bairnsfather cartoon in a book at my grandmother's house. It was perhaps his most famous piece; two British Tommies during World War I are in a foxhole, all hell breaking loose, and one of the soldiers, Old Bill, tells his companion "Well, if you knows of a better 'ole, go to it!" Some years later, I came across an issue of Life from either 1939 or 1940 and Old Bill was brought out of retirement for the new war. When I saw this book advertised, I thought it was a must-buy and I was not disappointed. Bairnsfather's style anticipated what Bill Mauldin would do with Willie and Joe during World War II; he looks at the common soldiers in the trenches, trying to get through the boredom, the terror, the indignities and the ridiculousness of war. Lucinda Gosling has a good biographical sketch of Bairnsfather and how popular his cartoons were in his era; Old Bill would be one of the earliest cartoon characters to be merchandised in a variety of items. I only wish she had gone more into the artist's postwar career. A Better 'Ole would make a fine companion volume to Mauldin's classic Up Front.

Bill Mauldin's Predecessor

Possibly a matter of my expectations. Bairnsfather was, if you will, the Bill Mauldin of the First World War, famous for his cartoons of trench life on the Western Front. The cartoons are pretty good to excellent. Some of them would have gotten a laugh out of Marlborough's soldiers, and some would still ring true in the "Stans" today. Ms. Gosling provides a life of Bairnsfather and history of the commercialization of his art. ("Old Bill" his prototype, would feature in plays and film, and his likeness would appear on everything from Toby mugs to radiator caps.)
For five stars, the written material would be shortened, and the cartoons presented on full pages without duplication--but with explanations when strictly necessary. "Another Secret Out" for example, is only funny if you've seen a "dazzle-painted" ship. But if you enjoy military cartoons, Old Bill is the prototype, and still one of the best.
