Review
"While a critical statement to the field at a critical time, Curtains? has plenty for anyone curious about what gets on stage, what doesn't, and why. If you ever looked up in an orchestra hall and marveled at all of the missing bodies, you will find this a satisfying read. In a single, compelling 145-page breath, Kaiser clears up the mystery and remains one of the few who doesn’t stint on the gory details.”—Philadelphia Inquirer

"Kaiser’s marketing ideas are commonsensical rather than groundbreaking: Develop a coherent strategy to focus the use of new technologies like e-mail and social media; sell the institution to donors as well as tickets to individuals; partner with public schools to provide the arts education that nurtures art appreciation. Of particular interest to the leaders of struggling companies will be his detailed thoughts on building more supportive and effective boards containing members with a broad range of expertise, background and even income levels. Only with such diverse and active boards, he contends, can arts organizations do the long-range planning necessary to survive in today’s challenging environment.” —Washington Post

"In some ways, the cultural future Kaiser describes reflects other social and economic trends. Just as wealth and power are increasingly concentrated amongst a shrinking number of powerful individuals and corporations, he sees a few famous mega-institutions dominating what’s left of the arts landscape, sucking up the talent and attention, catering to the wealthy who can underwrite their productions and afford their tickets. As the number of small and mid-size groups shrinks, he predicts, so will the ethnic diversity and artistic experimentation that brings us the next defining trend or great artist, since the mega-troupes will have to appeal to the widest possible audience (at least in their online, mass offerings.)” —Miami Herald

"Kaiser’s thin book is pragmatic, structured and thick with facts, ideas and anecdotes, including telling and knowing observations about technology."—The Georgetowner

“Recommended.”—Choice

"In his new book, former Kennedy Center impresario Michael Kaiser argues that the future of the arts lies with quality, subsidy, and daring—all of which are in dangerously short supply.”—American Theatre

Review
“Michael Kaiser is very competent and far-sighted in dealing with the extremely complicated economic and organizational aspects of performing arts institutions, especially in this period of grave crises.” (Plácido Domingo)

“No one knows more about arts administration than Michael Kaiser. No wonder people the world over clamor for his attention and keen advice.” (Terrence McNally)

“Michael Kaiser is an engaging and inspiring impresario, who truly has made a difference in turning around arts organizations. He knows firsthand of what he speaks.” (Renée Fleming)

Say Goodbye to Art Institutions as We Know Them and Be Prepared for a Future with a Lot Less of Them
By Leo Griffin
If you were hoping for a book that explored the future of arts organizations in America in an upbeat way -- this isn’t your book. If you are interested in tough talk about what will likely be the years ahead by an author that has had a distinguished practice of running such well-known institutions as the Kennedy Center and the American Ballet Theatre – he is your guy. And boy the talk is tough.

In "Curtains?" Mr. Kaiser autopsies the arts explosion period (1950-2000), the have and have not period (2001-present) and makes a prediction on the Brave New World that is likely to be the arts in 2035. I guess the greatest generation gave us the best arts support as well as winning World War 2 for us. He focuses on theater, ballet, dance, museums and opera in his historical review and his predictions. In a change from many books evaluating the future of the arts, Mr. Kaiser uses economic concepts of supply, demand, competition and substitution in evaluating problems facing the arts in America.

While the book offers an excellent look at the problems facing arts institutions today such as increasing labor costs, competition from entertainment in new platforms (internet, telecasts) it is much weaker –and bleaker-- on what can be done. There are some current trends such as the lack of arts education in today’s educational curriculum that I felt he overstated. While I think he is correct in analyzing the threats to the arts it seems he is bleaker on his perception of arts in the future than he needs to be. While arts education has mostly eliminated in elementary schools across America (and I agree we are the worse for it), it seems to be flourishing in afterschool, weekend and summer programs. While afterschool arts enrichment programs are not as democratic as school based programs, they will likely keep us from having an arts illiterate generation. Mr. Kaiser is similarly bleak about small and midsized arts institutions ability to grow and retain gifted managers and directors. He thinks only top tier organizations with nationwide reputations will have these gifted managers. That is because these smaller organizations can’t pay top dollar for these gifted individuals.

So read Mr. Kaiser’s book to find out the challenges facing arts institutions but let’s see if we can prove him wrong about the future; because a future without the diversity of art and arts institutions we have today would be a sad thing indeed. See you in 2035.

A powerful book and message that every supporter of the arts should read and take to heart.
By J. Fischer
As executive director of a small but growing 20-year-old arts presenting organization I couldn't wait to receive Kaiser's newest book. Much of what he says parallels what I have been saying to my board and to the arts and cultural leaders in our community - but in a far more articulate and concise way.

I am making a personal gift of the book to each of our organization's board members with the hope that they will read, assimilate, and hopefully share the book and the message it contains with others.

Most informative but wanted more on the "future"
By Richard Kamenitzer
Michael Kaiser provides a lengthy introduction and sample experiences into where the management of the arts has come from and where it is now. This is an important foundational piece, as we explore ways for the arts to keep pace with an ever advancing environment. Clearly, competition from other activities available to the 21st century audiences will require adept managers, adequately prepared and experienced, to maneuver thru and establish a footing for the future.
The title hinted at more about the future than the author ventured to propose. Understandably, predicting how, when and why things will evolve is not a science, but given Michael Kaiser's extensive experience, successes and development of smart phrases, I had expected more. Nonetheless, this is a work worthy of being in the library of today's and tomorrow's arts manager.
