After reading Danielle's book, I realized that I was wearing all the wrong colors!! I have so much black and gray in my wardrobe and now I know that needs to change. In fact after a couple of days, I took her advice about wearing my eye color to make a good impression on others and I certainly noticed a difference in how people responded to me. I would recommend this book as it's a simple way to enhance the goodness in your everyday life.

Who would have known that the colors you wear affect the way others see you? This book points out the importance, on many levels, of knowing your colors. Many years ago (more than I care to disclose) I had the opportunity of having my colors done by Danielle. Now that I am older and living in a different environment, sunny-hot-humid, I'm thinking that it may be time to call on her services again.

Great guide to the Chicago style!

Great guide to the Chicago style blues from one of the best. Having played with the late great Muddy Waters, Bob learned from a legend. The accompanying video lessons are great and video quality is first-class both in content and production quality. Makes it very easy to follow ad pickup the riffs shown. I would have rated this 5 stars except the production quality of the print book is lacking. The first time I opened the book, the whole cover (not just the front) fell away. Very annoying for a new book and also very poor quality control from the production dept. After applying a fair amount of super glue, we're back in business. That being said, I highly recommend this book if you want to further your chops in this style of the blues.

Long overdue!

There's lots of books on how to play hot licks, but not that many on how to play the part that most guitar players fall down on--the rhythm. Jimi was quoted once something like " There's a world of lead guitar players out there, but the most important thing is the rhythm". A bunch of good solid material here that we used to have to figure out from records & watching the old guys play. Hopefully this book will elevate the playing level at lots of blues jams at least!

As a huge Blues fan and guitarist, this title jumped out at me. I saw Bob Margolin and band perform years ago and was aware that he played with Muddy Waters for awhile. He is the real deal. This book is full of great info and for me, has plenty of great lesson examples that are well explained in print along with the included DVD.

Elvina T. Pearce studied piano with Isabelle Vengerova and pedagogy with Frances Clark. She was a founding faculty member of The New School for Music Study, one of the founders of The Frances Clark Center, Editor-in-Chief of Keyboard Companion magazine from 2000-2006, and has been actively involved with NCKP since its inception. A Piano Teacher and Student Dream Book

I could hardly wait to get my hands on this material because it is not a text book. It is a valuble, readable, personal, applicable, "put it on the piano music rack" gem of a book. The content is rich with discovery and insights that apply on many levels for students (and yes you piano majors), their teachers (be it a home studio to the university level) and even parents. I am confident, no matter how many years one has been a piano instructor or student, you will have some great aha moments. We all need to be in the mode to continue to learn, re-think and be stimulated in our disciplines and passions. The way the book is organized is a further joy. You can easily find and delve into different subjects on different days. However, I assure you it is a divine treat to read from beginning to end. Keep your notes handy so you are ready to import her creativite, passionate experience as a brilliant educator into a life-application read. Any student and teacher knows that we need to expand, review and learn how to effectively and meaningfully practice. Elvina Truman Pearce takes us there and beyond. She certainly did this for me over 40 years ago and thus remains applicable today. My students and I personally continue to appreciate her direction and influence in the studio and my professional life..

Many Reasons for Reading "The Success Factor in Piano Teaching"

Whether you are a piano teacher, a professional or in any other line of business, this book is a fascinating read. Following the life of Elvina Pearce is most interesting and her teaching methods find parallels in many other areas. One of her teaching methods, "Understanding the whole should precede drilling on the parts," has its parallel in mathematics where "the whole is greater than or equal to the sum of the the parts" is actually a mathematical concept. Her emphasis on practicing until a concept is mastered will put one in good stead in any endeavor of life. There is also a good analogy between Mrs. Pearce's philosophy of asking her students how they think they performed a certain piece rather than beginning by telling the student what she thinks and the successful professional conducting a performance review for an employee--starting the review by asking the employee how he or she thinks she did with certain pre-set goals. This book is well worth reading regardless of your background.

Dr Michael Pearce lives in Thousand Oaks, California, where he teaches at California Lutheran University. Emergence and Consciousness

Michael J. Pearce is an art professor who experienced a light bulb moment when he attended a talk in the philosophy department on the topic of emergence by a guest speaker. “Emergence, which describes the characteristics of forms that come out of complex systems, could apply especially well to how we experience art, how we understand aesthetics in relation to our evolving mind, and how we understand the creative process of making representational art… I suddenly realized that considering the relationship between emergence and consciousness could lead to a description of what distinguishes art objects from other things as we perceive them through our senses. Emergence allows us to define art!”

This book presents an interesting framework for thinking about art, although it is written in a dense academic style.

“Emergence fills the void left by the collapse of postmodernism because it offers the potential for a convincing new idealism that has its foundation in scientific investigation, making room for spirituality… and presenting a way to understand how they meet the consciousness of the beholder.”

“Art is better explained by looking at how the mind works than by looking at the products of mind. That’s why quite a lot of this book is about consciousness, because of the direct relationship between it and the making of art objects.”

“Consciousness evolves through emergent experiences, felt in their strongest manifestations as moments of revelation, or epiphany, or strong feelings of completion that we feel when we hear something or see something that seems to affirm our being… We have an enormous amount of such experiences when we are children… I’m calling them ‘emergent experiences’ because of their clear relationship to our experiences of the qualities that emerge from complexity.”

“Understanding complexity and emergence helps to explain what is happening when we have that wonderful experience of beautiful things which makes us feel uplifted, removed from daily life and in spiritual harmony with something greater than ourselves... The emergent experience is the moment of affirmation, of fulfillment, of a categorical generalization made in the brain, when we recognize a confirmation of our conceptual thought processes.”

“Emergence can help us to get to grips with qualities that are greater than the sum of their parts… Water is made of oxygen and hydrogen, but neither of those two elements is wet. Wetness is an emergent quality of water… Like wetness, the emergent experience of beauty is a quality that is greater than the sum of its parts.”

“Neuroscientist Semir Zeki considers art-making to be the equivalent of the neurologic process of seeing, which is a function of the brain… We only comprehend reality through our sensory perception of it, which means that it is entirely mediated and changed by the transference of information as sensory input to consciousness… What we describe as reality is actually a complex semiotic version of the actual thing—this stands for that.”

So what is art? “I cannot find a better explanation of what art is than this: art is an expression of mind in material, made solely for the purpose of providing the potential for emergent experience for another’s mind.” Thus, Duchamp’s urinal and Monzoni’s cans of feces are not art.

I was always the one not in the pictures as I was always taking them. In this life long process I learned the difference between a picture and a photo. One of my greatest photographic thrills is to have people look at me when I'm photographing something, then look in the direction I'm photographing and look back at me. Then they look again at the direction I'm photographing. Seeing the look of what is he doing? What does he see? Fills me with the "What" the juice of my being?" About the Author
John Madden's passion for the Southwest comes through in his work, which depicts the vastness and grandeur of this rich land. His photos have graced the homes of Madeline Kahn, Michael Landon, U.S. Representative Larry Combest, former Texas Governor Ann Richards, and Texas Senator John T. Montford, to name a few, and his photography has been showcased in gallery shows throughout the Southwest. Madden assisted National Geographic photographers Dewitt Jones and Rike Cooke during two photography seminars on the island of Molokai, Hawaii. He has served as the official photographer for the Colorado Indian Market, the Texas Indian Market and Southwest Showcase, the Disabled American Veterans National Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and for John T. Montford, Governor of the Day. His work has appeared in publications including Bravo, Cowboy, Southwest Art, US Art, Vietnam Veteran, Whispering Wind, and World Oil, as well as calendars and advertisements. Madden lives in Amarillo, Texas, with his wife Judy and is working on his next book, Through My Eyes-The Art of Faces.

The Moment the heart beats and the Shutter Clicks

Social media has made everyone believe that a picture is a photograph. We are constantly bombarded with pictures of everyday life on Facebook and Instagram, some of which should never be shared! It isn't until you see a Photograph taken with experience, excitement and, yes love, will you be mesmerized by what was seen by the spirit and soul of the person taking that moment in time when everything was just right, the subject, space, beat of the heart in time with the "click" of the shutter.

When someone like John Madden, a true steward of the earth, decides to publish photographs in a book like this, he is giving you a piece of himself. In every picture, in every story, he invites you to lose yourself with him as he travels to find that wonderful moment to share, to introduce you to people who you might meet, go places you will long to see for real, touch you emotionally or make you smile because he was there that day to capture this moment in time.

To think these are just a few of the incredible photographs Mr. Madden has taken over the years, we can only hope that this is the first of many with the stories that accompany them that he will share with us in the future.

How he loves our Great Land, the people

After knowing the artist for eleven years and obtaining several of his art photographs, I really did not realize what made this man click (pun).

Having an opportunity to get a sneak-peek at his first book “Through My Eyes-Why Take That Photo” I was carried away with the photos and stories that brought them to life-the man behind the camera.

I learned more about John Madden, after reading his book and what was going on behind his eyes. How he loves our Great Land, the people, animals, and all of God’s creatures.

I was so intrigued with his work I could not put his book down until I finished the last page.

A “must” book of pictures capturing Souls… not only of his subjects, but the author John Madden himself. John has truly demonstrated his love for the people, love for varying customs, art forms, and a heartfelt love for an image which presents itself for a moment and gone in an instant. John joins instinct with creativity. What can one say about a book filled with interesting pictures and the many humorous stories that go along with it. John certainly has had fun enjoying photography along with the interesting people he met, and rewarding experiences during the process. Did I say a “must” book? Loved it. ~ Skidaddy Rex
