Beautiful, vibrant paintings

I was happy to discover this impressionist artist. I just love her work! The printed colors on this calendar are vibrant, and the paper is of good quality. Looking forward to enjoying this all year. (Note: The painting on the cover is not one of the monthly illustrations, but is one of my favorites, so I might hang it on the wall when the year is over.)

I love Erin Hanson's landscapes -- and "skyscapes" like the January page I have open now -- and this is such a nice way to enjoy prints of her work. It's a nice sized calendar that is just what I need and want in my home office.

I went to meet Erin Hanson at an art festival in La Quinta. She is great and her art is wonderful! I bought this calendar because I live in a motorhome and don't have room for much art. I love this because I get twelve great paintings on the calendar. Sharon Woods

The great part about this book is that regardless of your drumming level, the exercises will sharpen you hand coordination,
improve your timing, and add to your repertoire of quinto licks. You can practice at your own pace, and the exercises are fun
to do. Comes with audio files to support you at all stages of your learning.

very recommendable licks

Hi folks,
after two days of working with this new book I must say it's very easy to learn the licks offered by Cliff. This is done in three steps for every lick. The first is called "Hand coordination lick" and consistes just of open tones. So in this step I learned the idea of the lick without having the need to concentrate on the right strokes too. The second step is called "Downbeat lick" which has the right tones played with a slow Downbeat rhythm. After that I was able to play the complete lick to a guaguanco rhythm. Here the fun starts. The "learning time" is optimized to be very short by this method. After that the notation is very helpful to "remember" the lick.
The licks are very tasteful and in the guaguanco example of each lick there is some kind of "support drum improvisation" what makes these licks alive.
For me this new book of Clifford Brooks is absolutely recommendable

As an aspiring percussionist, I've taken years of group ensemble lessons which have increased my musicality and ability to listen and synch with other players. However, my ability to break down a rhythm into its component parts and develop the timing necessary to improvise "in the pocket" I owe to the author, Mr. Brooks. In 50 Quinto Licks, Cliff shares these techniques in a clear and methodical way that will help both a beginner or an intermediate drummer to develop this same skill. The audio files provided for background are also important for hearing those spaces into which an improvisor talks with her/her collaborators. I highly recommend this text for those who are serious about increasing the discipline to their drumming craft.

The Trace Line series, seems to be a really great way to show how to color (outline) many objects that are the subject for the books! From here, you can read up on the insides, to figure out how to do many drawing techniques and how to do them. Its like having an art teacher in your room!

The patterns in this book are nice, but there were no instructions. There was a color chart of the cookies used, but you're left on your own add to how and where to apply. This was basically a book of patterns only.

Good reference for the oil painter

This book will be most helpful for the oil painter. I did mark a few sections on shading, composition and blocking in that translate to other mediums, but I have not yet made the leap to oils, so this is not a very valuable resource for me. The overall advice to paint small and often, to block in shapes before details, etc. is of course sound and essential.

I enjoyed the book overall; however, the lesser star is that I would have preferred a little more detail in each chapter.

This is one of the many books in Arcadia Publishing's Images of America series and is the third on the city of Glen Cove, N. Y. by the author. More specifically it is part of the Images of Modern America series and is more current in nature covering from the 1950s to nearly the present day as opposed to a more historical treatment.

This book follows the same general form,at of others published by Arcadia. It consists of a series of photographs with captions with very limited text. Almost all of the photographs are in color, and typically are mostly snapshots instead of professionally produced images. The chapters include "The Evolving City", "Faith, Service, and Heritage", and "Landmarks and Legacy". The contents feature scenes around the community, public events, and pictures of selected residents.

Having been raised in Glen Cove in the 1950s and 1960s I enjoyed this book as well as the author's previous two. My only significant issue is with the coverage given to local politicians, particularly the Suozzi family, which has been prominent in local politics for about 60 years. It appeared to be a bit gratuitous, and the approximately twenty photographs dedicated to the subject could have been better used for additional scenes of neighborhoods, landmarks, beaches, schools or the downtown area known as the "village". Another shortcoming is the quality of many of the photographs, which is typical of these books in general. As noted previously, they are more like snapshots, and their technical quality can often be mediocre; however, this is acceptable, since they may represent the only visual record of the subject.

I recommend the book if you once lived in Glen Cove. I also recommend the previous two Glen Cove books in the series.

About the Author
Barbara Nicolosi is the Founder and Chair Emeritus of Act One, Inc. a non-profit mentoring program for screenwriters and producers in Hollywood. She is a member of the Writers Guild of America-West and has written screenplays for several Hollywood production companies. She has been a development executive, story consultant and script doctor for hundreds of projects as well as a grants panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, and a reader for the prestigious Humanitas Prize for screenwriting. Barbara has been an adjunct professor of screenwriting at Pepperdine University and Azusa Pacific University.

Vicki Peterson is a screenwriter and founding partner of Catharsis (storycatharsis.com), which mentors writers and develops screen projects for various producers. Vicki’s most recent writing projects include television pilots, Mind Over Matter and Alum Rock Ave, which is with Herrick Entertainment. Her feature, Mother at War is with producer Ken Stewart. Her other projects include features, TV specs, and rewrites for production companies, and her scripts have been selected as finalists for several film festivals and fellowships. Vicki is formerly the director of both the Writing for Film and Television Program and Producing and Entertainment Executive Program at Act One, Inc. (actoneprogram.com), of which she is also an alumna. Before that, Vicki was a development executive at Origin Entertainment and Hero Pictures. Vicki got her start in theatre, working at the Tony award –winning La Jolla Playhouse on several pre-Broadway productions.

Great for professional writers, movie fans, and anyone interested in storytelling

As a professional writer and editor, I've read my share of "how to write" books and am now picky about what I buy because I've already read so many books that either did or did not help my career. This book is a great one, well worth the price whether you are beginning as a writer or looking for something to add to your skills or jump-start a project.

The book is useful for any sort of writer, not just for writers of screenplays. There's a lot of information about how to tell a story that any writer can benefit from. Plus, it's great for movie lovers and story lovers of all sorts, because it helps the reader see how a good story is told and what makes it good. I found it very helpful as a writer and very interesting as a movie viewer.

The conceit is that screenwriters get their screenplays back with "notes" but the notes don't always convey much. How do you interpret "I didn't relate to the characters," for instance? The authors have organized the chapters into addressing categories of such notes, and use that as their hook to explain how to tell a story, how to make a character interesting, what makes a story a story versus a list of things that happen, and so on. Chapters specific to screenwriting (the one and only format and typeface that are acceptable, and so on) are kept that way, so the reader can consult them for a job, check them out if curious, or skip them entirely.

An in-depth look at story

I'm not a fan of the usual "tips and tricks" format of screenwriting books-- too much stuff to try to juggle and remember as you're writing. Notes to Screenwriters is a more grounded, in-depth approach: what makes a story, what makes a story work, and what makes a story a screenplay. Highly recommended.

The Black-Belt of screenwriting Books!

This is a holistic book in that it covers the whole spectrum of the screenwriter's journey, from the craft of storytelling and the psychology of note-givers to navigating the business of professional writing from beginning to end. There's even a short section on formatting.
Of particular note, the authors offer a philosophy of artful storytelling as a necessary element of a healthy society. This passion is delivered in great depth and organized in a very accessible way. The book would serve well as a guide through the writing of a screenplay. It would be equally useful as a classroom text in the hands of professors and students. Masterfully delivered.

From the Author
Stephanie has been doing various arts and crafts most of her life, having been inspired by her mother who had a degree in graphic arts and later in life became adept at the wood carving of various duck and other wildlife. Stephanie started painting on feathers 10 years ago. She has sold roughly 200 of them since then. She's painted eagles, wolves, bear, horses, parrots, fox, duck, cowboys, Indians, and dogs on imitation eagle(it's not legal to own or sell actual eagle feathers), Macaaw, and turkey feathers.  She tried advertising customized portraits of people's pet dogs and commissioned a few of those before discontinuing after having too many problems dealing with fickle customers and deciding it wasn't worth the stress.  The original goal was to find a marketable type of art to sell at swap meets. This meant the painting had to take minimal time and cost of materials, yet still be considered a work of art and be unique, so as to be priced relatively inexpensively for that type of venue.  After some trial and error, she came up with a few tips and tricks to replicate the painting on feathers she'd seen in Costa Rica. This is mostly just a hobbie for her as she likes to try all types of art and is currently learning pinstriping and airbrush techniques for fun, and, perhaps in the future, for profit.

If you use this book to teach intro soc, be aware of an error in it

This review is written for other instructors considering or using this textbook to teach introductory sociology. It's not a general review of the book from a student perspective.

Henslin writes various sizes of the down-to-earth textbooks, small (core concepts), medium (essentials), and large (the main textbook, this one). All of them feature Henslin's real-life approach and emphasize common sense vs. social knowledge based on facts and on use of sociological concepts. But it is sloppily edited. In every edition of these books that I have seen, including the new 10th edition, and in each size (s, m, l), an important error is repeated in the gender chapter: the claim that most victims of homicide are female. The error is in the chapter text, the chapter-end summary, and the test bank (watch out for that question). It matters because a) I'm trying to teach students that facts are more reliable than guesses, stereotypes, and media-based perceptions, b) the particular error reflects the slant of the gender chapter, which is women-as-victims-of-men, when the truth is more complex (women are also victimized by women in many ways, in many countries; and men are most often the targets of violence by men), and c) if students are paying this much for a book, the basic facts should be right.

I've communicated this error repeatedly over the past year to my rep, who is unwilling or unable to pass it on to the publisher. I tried to find a way to contact the publisher via the website and gave up. I don't want to knock the book as a whole--it has many good features--but I won't use it again until this is fixed. There are too many similar alternatives, and I can always discuss some of Henslin's common sense vs. reality points in class without using it as a required text. I like the TestGen system, and the testbank for this book is good with the exception of the question I've pointed out here. (On the other hand, there may be other factual errors in the book that I haven't noticed.)

As an instructor, I've found that the password-protected study site is a disadvantage of this book and publisher. The study site is high quality and is great if the student buys the book with the password card still attached. But students who buy it used without the card get upset when they can't access the site and blame me for the problem. Open-access study sites are the way to go, publishers! This is one of those textbooks in which continual new editions are not really needed but get published anyway because of the changing structure of the textbook market. That practice is so common that although it creates incredible book costs for students, there are few ways to get around it.

GREAT for College Students

I needed this book for a sociology course and I think it is fantastic! The author has done an amazing job to help readers easily relate to the subject and keep it interesting by describing his own experiences & other people's experiences around the world. The definitions are even in boldface & described on the page so that you don't have to keep flipping back to the glossary. The book is informative, yet delightful as the author shows you how to use your sociological imagination & how to open your mind. I'd recommend this book to any person interested in sociology because of how clear & enjoyable it is to read. I've never had so much fun reading a textbook!

Almost the Exact Same As 3rd Edition

It is an interesting textbook; easily readable and understandable.
Instead of paying $86 for the third edition I risked getting this, 2nd edition and it turns out
they are both almost absolutely the same.
The 3rd addition comes with a CD and you get access to a supplmental website - but if you do your reading you can get by without the supplemental material just fine.
If you are a decent student, I recommend getting the 2nd edition (today available used on amazon for 78 cents).
If you go to class, read the book and fufill any writing assignments then you can do just fine with the 2nd edition.

Who says the wedding has to be grand for the pictures to stand out? Take a look at that 'bidai shot' at d back of the auto rickshaw.Vision, simplicity, dedication and hard work at its best. Images like these don't happen by fluke neither they are as simple to click as they appear to be.
Sephi Bergerson once again shows that a beautiful picture is made when you give your heart and soul to the story, backdrops are just immaterial. Simple yet magnificent, vibrant yet classy, 'Behind the Indian Veil' takes you on a journey of rediscovering Indian weddings. A must have book for a newbie and a professional alike.
Thank you Sephi Bergerson for inspiring me, once again.

Do you really know Indian Weddings?

It's been two years since I first met Sephi. To be honest, I didn't even know him until I got to attend one of his workshop in Jaipur. As a newbie wedding photographer I was looking for some inspiration and here he was. Straightforward and brutally honest. At the end of three days, I had a lot to think about and plan my next moves.

For the first time I saw Indian weddings from a different perspective. His pictures talk to you, sometimes even scream at you too. You have to spend good amount of time at each one as there is a story unfolding. Watch it again. And again. And if you have a good eye, you will end up understanding the whole story.

This book is for an inspiration. Must read for everyone. Whether you are a bride, father of a bride, a photographer, a collector or whoever. You must must have it.

Oh, and don't buy the kindle edition. That's gross injustice as it will end up being on your smartphones or other portable devices where you might forget about it.

Get the print copy. It speaks better. Look at it everyday.
And the beautifully designed book adds great value to your coffee table. Just like mine now. And I know all my friends will look at it and try to understand what really happens at an Indian Wedding.

So go, buy it right away!!!

A unique book about a unique moment

Great book, fantastic pictures and very nice paper quality. It really reminded me of the lovely time I spent in India with my wife :) If you are in love with India, you will be in love with that book !

THAD SITTON, a Texas historian and author best known for his expertise in oral history and East Texas, is the author or coauthor of numerous books, including the award-winning Every Sun That Rises: Wyatt Moore of Caddo Lake. He lives in Austin, Texas. CAROLYN BROWN is a professional photographer based in Dallas, Texas. Her photography of Dallas, Mexico, and Egypt has appeared in solo and group exhibitions in Texas and beyond, and she has been photographer and coauthor of several books, including four promotional books on Dallas.

This book is an absolute gem

I bought this for my boss's 80th birthday; he grew up around Caddo Lake (the only natural lake in Texas) and still goes there to fish and just hang out with pals. He was stunned by the photography, and every time he visits his friends there he takes it with him to show it off. It's become almost like his personal autograph book -- everyone signs their favorite page, and he is beside himself with joy!

Even of you're not from this neck of the woods (I'm not a native), the photography and history is breathtaking. The paper is of a glossy type, which really makes the pictures stand out in rich color. (I will be ordering a few more for him so he can give his Caddo friends their own copy at Christmas!)
